EDTA-functionalized KCC-1 and KIT-6 mesoporous silicas for Nd3+ ion recovery from aqueous solutions

  • Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-functionalized KIT-6 and KCC-1 mesoporous silicas were prepared via post-synthesis grafting and examined for their ability to promote the recovery of rare earth metal ions such as $Nd^{3+}$ from an aqueous medium. The obtained adsorption isotherms were fitted to the Langmuir model, which gave a maximum adsorption of $Nd^{3+}$ ions of 109.8 and 96.5 mg/g for KIT-6-EDTA and KCC-1-EDTA, respectively, at $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 6. The adsorption kinetic profile of KIT-6 was faster than KCC-1. KIT-6 was also proved to be more stable against desorption under acidic regeneration conditions.

  • Acidovorax citrulli는 전 세계적으로 다양한 박과 작물 재배포장에서 과실썩음병(bacterial fruit blotch)을 일으키며, 경제적으로 큰 피해를 주고 있다. 효과적인 병 방제 전략을 수립하기 위한 기초자료를 얻고자 전국의 주요 박과 작물 재배지역으로부터 얻은 A. citrulli 33균주들을 대상으로 5개 유전자(16S rRNA, adk, gltA, glyA, pilT)를 이용한 multi-locus 유연관계 분석을 실시하였다. 국내 A. citrulli 집단은 종 특이적이며, 그룹 특이적인 유전적 특성들을 기반으로 KCC1과 KCC2 그룹으로 나누어졌으며, 이들은 수박과 오이와 멜론분리균들을 모두 포함했고 이들 중 KCC2 그룹 균주들의 발생이 우세했다. KCC1 그룹 균주들은 수박이외 기주에서의 발생비율이 64%였으나, KCC2 그룹에서는 수박분리균의 비율이 72%로 우세하였다. 본 연구결과는 국내 A. citrulli 집단에 유전적인 변이가 존재한다는 것을 밝혔으며, 효과적인 박과 작물 과실썩음병 방제체계 수립에 있어서 매우 유용한 자료로 활용될 것으로 판단된다.

Restitution as the Consequence of Frustration under English Law and Korean Law in a Comparative Perspective

  • Purpose - This paper examines the admissibility of restitution as the legal consequence where a contract is frustrated under the Law of Reform (Frustrated Contracts) Act 1943 in comparison with Korean Civil Code (KCC). In order to provide practical guidelines and advice regarding choice of and application of law for contracting parties in international trade, the paper comparatively evaluates requirements and the scope of restitution under the Act 1943 and KCC. Design/methodology - This paper executes a comparative study to analyze whether the parties may claim restitution of money paid or non-money benefit obtained before or after the time of discharge under English law and KCC. To achieve the purpose, it focuses on the identifying characteristics of each statute, thereby providing guidelines to overcome difficulties in legal application and interpretation as to restitution as the consequence of frustration. Findings - Under English law, the benefit may be restituted according to Art 1943 or the common law rule, mistake of fact or law. Under the KCC, restitution is considered based on the principle of the obligation to recover the original obtained regardless of the time when the benefit is conferred. Whilst Act 1943 does not require careful analysis of the grounds of restitution, requirements to justify restitution according to the principle of unjust enrichment, mistake of fact or law, and the KCC should be met. Meanwhile, the KCC may provide more opportunities to award restitution because it does not require the burden of proof related to the defendant's good faith, unlike the principle of unjust enrichment. Originality/value - Where the contract is frustrated by the effect of COVID-19, one legal issue is a consequence of frustration. Therefore, this paper analyzes requirements and the scope of restitution under English law as compared with the KCC in a timely manner. It provides contracting parties with practical guidelines and advice to reduce unpredictability when they choose the governing law in a contract.

Analysis of intraspecific genetic diversity in Acidovorax citrulli causing bacterial fruit blotch on cucurbits in Korea

  • Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) caused by Acidovorax citrulli is a devastating disease found in many cucurbits cultivation fields. The genetic diversity for 29 strains of A. citrulli collected from various cucurbits in South Korea was determined by DNA fingerprinting with a pathogenicity test, multi locus analysis, Rep-PCR (repetitive sequence polymerase chain reaction), and URP (universal rice primers) PCR bands. Two distinct groups (Korean Clonal Complex, KCC1 and KCC2) in the population were identified based on group specific genetic variation in the multi locus phylogeny using six conserved loci and showed a very high similarity with DNA sequences for representative foreign groups [the group I (CC1-1 type) and the group II (CC2-5 type)] widely distributed worldwide, respectively. Additionally, in the case of phaC, a new genotype was found within each Korean group. The KCC1 was more heterogeneous compared to the KCC2. The KCC1 recovered mainly from melons and watermelons (ratio of 6 : 3) and 15 of the 20 KCC2 strains recovered from watermelons were dominant in the pathogen population. Accordingly, this study found that two distinct groups of differentiated A. citrulli exist in South Korea, genetically very similar to representative foreign groups, with a new genotype in each group resulting in their genetic diversity.

B16 흑색종세포에서 아피제닌에 의한 멜라닌 합성에 미치는 NADPH 산화효소-유래 활성산소종의 역할 (Role of NADPH Oxidase-mediated Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Apigenin-induced Melanogenesis in B16 Melanoma Cells)

  • Previously, we have reported that apigenin, a natural flavonoid found in a variety of vegetables and fruits, stimulated melanogenesis through the activation of $K^+-Cl^-$-cotransport (KCC) in B16 melanoma cells. In this study we investigated the possible involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the mechanism of apigenin-induced melanogenesis in B16 cells. Apigenin elevated intracellular ROS level in a dose-dependent manner. Treatment with various inhibitors of NADPH oxidase, diphenylene iodonium (DPI), apocynin (Apo) and neopterine (NP) significantly inhibited both the generation of ROS and melanogenesis induced by apigenin. In addition these inhibitors profoundly inhibited apigenin-induced $Cl^-$-dependent $K^+$ efflux, a hallmark of KCC activity. However, the apigenin-induced ROS generation was not significantly affected by treatment with a specific KCC inhibitor R-(+)-[(2-n-butyl-6,7-dichloro-2-cyclopentyl-2,3-dihydro-1-oxo-1H-inden-5-yl)oxy]acetic acid (DIOA). These results indicate that the ROS production may be a upstream regulator of the apigenin-induced KCC stimulation, and in turn, melanogenesis in the B16 cells. Taken together, these results suggest that the NADPH oxidase-mediated ROS production may play an important role in the apigenin-induced melanogenesis in B16 cells. These results further suggest that NADPH oxidase may be a good target for the management of hyperpigmentation disorders.

  • 본 논문은 컴퓨터 정보기술인증기준 KCC2010 공학 기준의 요구사항에 의해 프로젝트 교과목의 이수체계 준수를 보장하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안 방법은 수강한 프로젝트 교과목의 학습성과에 의해 다음 단계의 프로젝트 교과목의 수강 기회가 부여되는 관문 모델을 통하여 프로젝트 교과목의 체계적인 이수를 설명한다. '소프트웨어프로젝트I' 교과목에 대한 평가 결과, 프로젝트 교과목의 이수체계 준수를 보장하기 위해서는 재교육 대상 학생들의 중도 탈락을 방지하기 위한 교과목 담당교수의 세심한 배려와 관심이 요구되었다.

Korean Expatriates Adjustments and Job Satisfaction in Malaysia: Analysis of Corporate Cultural Asymmetry

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to discover how Korean expatriates that are currently employed in Korean subsidiaries operational in Malaysia possibly suffer from career dissatisfaction due to differences between Korean Corporate Culture (KCC) and Malaysian Corporate Culture (MCC). The integration of KCC into MCC is discussed. Research design, data, and methodology - The analysis herein is via a qualitative research. Forty-six interviewees voluntarily participated in in-depth interviews. Document analysis and qualitative interviews were utilized to develop participant profiles and to generate the framework. Interview data were transcribed and subsequently analysed to facilitate the development of themes and ultimately led to emerging patterns. The framework discusses the following Confucian pillars pronounced in KCC: Control Systems, Power Structures, Organisational Structures, Authority and Harmony and Stories and Myths. Those pillars are analysed and the results of the interviews are discussed in detail. Results - Korean expatriates on assignment in Malaysia endure struggles in all five selected Confucian pillars as they are not symmetrical with Korean Corporate Culture common at head companies in Korea. Conclusion - As a consequence, there is substantial disharmony which needs to be rectified if Korean companies are to continue their 'miraculous' economic movement into the country.
