  • Paecilomyces sinclairiis (PS) is known as a functional food or human health supplement. However concerns have been raised about its kidney toxicity. This study was performed to investigate the kidney toxicity of PS by 13 week-oral administration to rats. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and kidney damage biomarkers including beta-2-microglobulin (${\beta}2m$), glutathione S-transferase alpha (GST-${\alpha}$), kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), calbindin, clusterin, cystatin C, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and osteopontin were measured during or after the treatment of PS. BUN, creatinine and kidney damage biomarkers in serum were not changed by PS. However, kidney cell karyomegaly and tubular hypertrophy were observed dose-dependently with higher severity in males. KIM-1, TIMP-1 and osteopontin in kidney and urine were increased dose dependently in male or at the highest dose in female rats. Increased urinary osteopontin by PS was not recovered at 2 weeks of post-exposure in both genders. Cystatin C in kidney was decreased at all treatment groups but inversely increased in urine. The changes in kidney damage biomarkers were more remarkable in male than female rats. These data indicate that the PS may provoke renal cell damage and glomerular filtration dysfunction in rats with histopathological lesions and change of kidney damage biomarkers in kidney or urine. Kidney and urinary KIM-1 and cystatin C were the most marked indicators, while kidney weight, BUN and creatinine and kidney damage biomarkers in serum were not influenced.

  • Hydrophilic Surface modification of Polysarene (PS) was performed by Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (APP). Air or 0, gases were used for carrier gases and RF power was changed from 150 to 350 W. We controlled the treatment time as 1 time to 4 time passing through the plasma region. when the carrier gas was air, the water contact angle on the PS surface was decreased from $91^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$. And the surface energy increased from 45.74 dyne/cm to 68.48 dyne/cm. In case of the $O_2$ plasma treatment, at 300 W of RF power and 4 times treatment, the water contact angle on the PS. Surface was decreased from $91^{\circ}$ to $17^{\circ}$ and the surface energy was increased from 45.74 dyne/cm to 69.73 dyne/cm. The surface energy was increased by polar force not by dispersion force. Improvement of surface properties can be explained by the formation of new hydrophilic groups which is identified as C-O, C=O by XPS analysis. The contact angle of APP treated PS surface kept in air was increased with time elapse, but maintained same value when it was kept in water. We treated the PS surface by APP and deposited Cu as $4,000\;{\AA}$ and $8,000\;{\AA}$ by thermal evaporation. The adhesion between sample and Cu thin film improvement of treated PS surface against untreated sample. could be verifiable by Tape test (ASTM D3359)

  • We fabricated thin films of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)(PS -b-PMMA) on the self-assembled monolayers(SAM) of 3-(p-methoxyphenyl)propyltrichlorosilane(MPTS) on silicon wafers. Cylindrical nanodomains of PMMA or PS were oriented perpendicular to the surface of silicon wafers due to the neutral affinity of the SAM to PS and PMMA blocks. By selective removal of the PMMA block with UV irradiation and washing, nanoporous films and nanorod assemblies were produced. The nanoporous film can be used for a nanolithographical mask.

  • Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells have been generated from mouse and human somatic cells by etopic expression of transcription factors. iPS cells are indistinguishable from ES cells in terms of morphology and stem cell marker expression. Moreover, mouse iPS cells give rise to chimeric mice that are competent for germline transmission. However, mice derived from iPS cells often develop tumors. Furthermore, the low efficiency of iPS cell generation is a big disadvantage for mechanistic studies. Nonviral plasmid.based vectors are free of many of the drawbacks that constrain viral vectors. The histone deacetylase inhibitor valproic acid (VPA) has been shown to improve the efficiency of mouse and human iPS cell generation, and vitamin C (Vc) accelerates gene expression changes and establishment of the fully reprogrammed state. The MEK inhibitor PD0325901 (Stemgent) has been shown to increase the efficiency of the reprogramming of human primary fibroblasts into iPS cells. In this report, we described the generation of mouse iPS cells devoid of exogenous DNA by the simple transient transfection of a nonviral vector carrying 2A-peptide-linked reprogramming factors. We used VPA, Vc, and the MEK inhibitor PD0325901 to increase the reprogramming efficiency. The reprogrammed somatic cells expressed pluripotency markers and formed EBs.

  • Cynanchi wilfordii Radix (CW) and Perilla sikokiana (PS) were extracted under different conditions to study their antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity activities. Their potentials as functional food ingredients were investigated. The highest total phenol contents were $15.74{\pm}0.69mg/g$ for CW100 [100% fermented ethanol (FE) extract from CW] and $39.37{\pm}3.46mg/g$ for PS50 (50% FE extract from PS). When extracts were processed at 1 mg/mL, DPPH radical scavenging activities were $79.79{\pm}0.79%$ and $82.69{\pm}1.07%$, respectively, at CW100 and PS50. ABTS radical scavenging activities were $80.20{\pm}2.86%$ and $75.00{\pm}1.78%$, respectively, at CW100 and PS50. However, ferric reducing antioxidant power activities at 1 mg/mL were higher than 80% for PS under all extraction conditions. The highest ${\alpha}$-amylase inhibitory activities were $51.56{\pm}0.56{\sim}59.2{\pm}1.13%$ at CW50 and $46.70{\pm}0.32{\sim}66.17{\pm}0.55%$ at PS0. Cell differentiation inhibitory effects in 3T3-L1 adipocytes were $29.49{\pm}2.98%$ at CW100 and $23.31{\pm}0.61%$ at PS50. The inhibitory effect of the CW100-PS50 mixture was $43.03{\pm}1.63%$, which was significantly higher than those of individual extracts.

  • A triboelectrostatic separation system using a fluidized bed tribocharger for the removal of PVC material in the mixture of PVC/PS plastics is designed and evaluated as a function of electric field strength, air flow rate, and the mixing ratio of two-component mixed plastics. It consists of a fluidized-bed tribocharger, a separation chamber, a collection chamber and a controller. PVC and PS particles can be imparted negative and positive surface charges, respectively, due to the difference in the work function values of plastics suspended in the fluidized-bed tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. Experimental results show that separation efficiency is strongly dependent on the electric Deld strength and particle mixing ratio. In the optimum conditions of 150 Ipm air flow rate and 2.6 kV/cm electric field strength a highly concentrated PVC (99.1%) can be recovered with a yield of more than 99.2% from the mixture of PVC and PS materials for a single stage of processing.

  • Polymer-supported crown ethers (Ps-CE) which can be used for phase-transfer catalyst (PTC) were synthesized for the purpose of allowing reusable function to ordinary crown ethers, and the kinetics of the liquid-solid-liquid triphase-catalyzed nucleophilic displacement reaction of iodide (aqueous phase) on 1-bromooctane (organic phase) using synthesized Ps-CE (solid) were studied. Ps-CE were obtained by grafting of hydroxymethyl crown ethers to 1~2% cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene. All reactions followed a pseudo-first order dependency on the 1-bromooctane concentration and the observed rate constants $(k_{obsd})$ were linearly related to the molar equivalents of Ps-CE, and were subjected to the influence of cross-linking density of polymer backbone, solvent and the reaction temperature. The catalytic activity of Ps-CE was also compared with that of structurally similar soluble crown ethers, and used Ps-CE were easily recovered after the reaction by simple filtration and could be reused without loss of catalytic activity in the same anionic displacement reaction. Enthalpies and entropies of activation associated with the displacement were 10~20kcal $mol^{-1}, 20~55eu. respectively, and the free energy of activation was ~30kcal mol^{-1}$.

  • For the performance improvement of a time-to-digital converter(TDC), a 2-stage high resolution TDC has been designed by using a 2-stage vernier time amplifier(2-S VTA). The two stage vernier time amplifier which has a gain over 64 of the resolution can enhance the resolution of the whole two stage TDC. Because of using a vernier TDC, the structure is not limited to advanced processes for achieving high resolution. The proposed TDC has been designed in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process and simulated with a 1.8V supply voltage. The entire input range is 512ps, and the full resolution 0.125ps.
