  • Various statistical classification methods to predict election to the Major League Baseball hall of fame of are implemented and their accuracies are compared. Seventeen independent variables are selected from the data of candidates eligible for the hall of fame and well-known classification methods such as discriminant analysis and logistic regression as well as the recently proposed Mahalanobis-Taguchi system(MTS). The MTS showed a better performance than the others in classification accuracy because it is especially efficient in cases where multivariate data does not constitute directionally geographical groups according to attributes.

  • Due to the competition between the various professional events, it is imperative for the team's management to improve efficiency by removing the inefficiencies of the professional team in order to gain a competitive edge. This study use different Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) models to measure the efficiency of professional sport organizations. In this mathematical-analytical study, this study first reviews the related literature to analyze the input/output variables. In the end, the variables were detected and the data for this study were gathered from the Korean Basketball League (KBL). While previous studies examine relative efficiency of Korean Professional baseball teams by using CCR model, this study fully utilize the DEA method to investigate Korean professional sports organizations' operating problem. Thus, this study propose full results of DEA analysis such as efficiency score (overall, technical, and scale efficiency), slacks in inputs and outputs of inefficient organizations, Malmquist index) As a result, this study provides not only the exact productivity information of a team and a way of improving a firm's productivity with a decision maker.

  • Purpose: This study sought to explore the effects of air pollution on professional sports in South Korea. Research design, data, and methodology: The dependent variable, the number of attendances, was comprised of 2013-2017 K-league, 2015-2017 KBO, 2014-2017 KBL regular season games, resulting in 1,063, 2,121, 810 individual match-level observations, respectively. With the actual data collected from each place across the country, we created a categorical variable which identify the air quality index divided into four categories by K-eco (i.e., good, moderate, unhealthy, hazardous). To analyze data, ANOVA was employed. Results: First, there was a significant group effect on K-league attendance. Second, there was a significant group effect of KBO attendance. Lastly, there was a significant group effect on KBL attendance. Conclusions: Summary of above results showed that each professional sport leagues' attendance was significantly different depending on the levels of air pollution. Implications were also discussed. Keywords: air pollution, sport spectatorship, professional sports.

  • This study evaluated soccer-specific fitness early and late season to check the conditioning status of K3 league soccer players. Evaluation factors included body composition, agility, quickness, endurance and isokinetic limb muscle strength. As a result, the factors that showed improvement in the late season were skeletal muscle mass, agility and quickness, and body composition, endurance and isokinetic limb muscle strength were not different from each other. The factors that showed improvement in the second half of the season are thought to be due to the learning effect of repetitive training, competition participation during the season. Lastly, endurance and lower extremity strength did not show improvement in the second half of the season due to the fact that no specific training was performed during the season. Taken together, it is necessary to periodically check the fitness status of athletes to develop and apply a fitness training program suitable for competition, transition and preparation period.

  • The professional alliance between disciplines of architecture and furniture design in the interwar years as displayed in the prominent architectural exhibitions of the era is interesting in the context of professionalization of American architecture. The way furniture design gradually became part of the architectural shows not only reflected but provided the practical field in which the architectural institution sought, under the new social order since the mid 1910s, a new professional cast-departing from the former milieu in the realm of high-art by the Beaux-Arts Movement. Exhibitions held by the Architectural League of New York in the 1920s revealed that the early impetus for reformation toward efficiency had been subsumed by the system of Beaux-Arts. By contrast, "The Architect and the Industrial Arts" show of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in which the most prominent architects of the era exercised their professional expertise in the design of "Moderne Style" interior furnishings, clearly shows how architects, in the milieu of expanding commercial market, sought to align their profession as industrial designers.
