Scholarly Reputation Building: How does ResearchGate Fare?

  • Employing a newly developed conceptual framework of the tasks and activities that comprise today's digital scholarly undertaking and their potentially reputation building, maintaining and enhancing components, the efforts of ResearchGate in supporting scholars' reputation building endeavours were put under the microscope. Not unexpectedly, RG performs well in regard to basic research activities. Clearly, too, with ten metrics at its disposal, RG is in a league of its own when it comes to monitoring individual research reputation. Where RG falls down is regarding scholarly activities that do not concern pure research and so especially teaching. Its claim to have created a new way of measuring reputation is only partially true because if it wants to do so genuinely then it needs to extend the range of scholarly activities covered. RG also falls short in informing members as to the nature and changes to its service and of embracing new actors, such as citizen scientists and amateur experts.

Estimating the determinants of victory and defeat through analyzing records of Korean pro-basketball (한국남자프로농구 경기기록 분석을 통한 승패결정요인 추정: 2010-2011시즌, 2011-2012시즌 정규리그 기록 적용)

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the determinants of victory and defeat through analyzing records of Korean men pro-basketball. Statistical models of victory and defeat were established by collecting present basketball records (2010-2011, 2011-2012 season). Korea Basketball League (KBL) informs records of every pro-basketball game data. The six offence variables (2P%, 3P%, FT%, OR, AS, TO), and the four defense variables (DR, ST, GD, BS) were used in this study. PASW program was used for logistic regression and Answer Tree program was used for the decision tree. All significance levels were set at .05. Major results were as follows. In the logistic regression, 2P%, 3P%, and TO were three offense variables significantly affecting victory and defeat, and DR, ST, and BS were three significant defense variables. Offensive variables 2P%, 3P%, TO, and AS are used in constructing the decision tree. The highest percentage of victory was 80.85% when 2P% was in 51%-58%, 3P% was more than 31 percent, and TO was less than 11 times. In the decision tree of the defence variables, the highest percentage of victory was 94.12% when DR was more than 24, ST was more than six, and BS was more than two times.

Big Data Analysis of the Correlation between Average Daily Temperature and Batting Power (빅데이터를 활용한 타자의 장타력과 일일 평균 기온 간의 상관관계 분석)

  • The KBO League is held over a long period of time due to the large number of games. Also, Korea has a diverse and distinct climate. Therefore, this study analyzed the relationship between the daily average temperature and the record of batting power such as home runs, triples, doubles, number of bases, batting percentage, and net batting percentage, and a third baseball record was defined. For this study, the correlation between the daily average temperature data and the batter who entered the standard at-bat in the KBO League in 2019 was analyzed through the SEMMA method. From the results of this study, it was found that the average daily temperature had an effect on a batter's hitting power. In particular, it was found that a batter's hitting power decreased on the day of temperatures recorded between 20.0 degrees and 24.9 degrees, and it was discussed that this may have been related to the physical condition of the pitcher the batter was facing. Therefore, it can be expected that players, coaching staff, and the front desk can use them in the game through conditions outside the game. In addition, it is expected that it will be a more useful analysis model by analyzing the records of pitching, base running, and defense as well as subsequent batting records.

Radiographic Changes of the Medial Epicondyle in Little League Baseball Player (청소년기 야구선수의 주관절 내상과의 방사선학적 변화)

  • Purpose : We evaluated radiographic changes and clinical manifestations of the elbow joint to identify the effects of the throwing between dominant and non-dominant arms. Materials and Methods : A hundred and five little leaguer’s baseball player in 5 elementary school and 2 middle school were evaluated for clinical symptoms and radiographic changes about elbow joint. Mean age was 12 years old and average periods of exercise were 32 months. Elbow functions were evaluated using ASES standardized assessment form and radiographic changes of medial epicondyle were examinated for enlargement, separation of the apophyses, fragmentation and irregularity. Results : Thirty seven players (35$\%$) were complained pain with throwing and the average score was 4.8 using visual analog scale. There were no significant differences in range of motion except flexion angle, valgus angle, and strength between dominant arm and non-dominant arm. Valgus laxity was more prominent in dominant arm. Ulnohumeral tenderness, radiocapitellar tenderness and medial flexor origin tenderness were in 18, 6, and 17 cases respectively in dominant arm. Medial epicondyle was enlarged in dominant arm with 13.0 by 6.3 mm compared to non-dominant arm with 11.7 by 6.1 mm. Apophyseal separation was 0.8 mm in dominant arm and 0.5 mm in non-dominant arm. Fragmentation and irregularity were 14 (13$\%$) and 25 (24$\%$) cases respectively in dominant arm. Conclusion : In little league baseball player, it needs usage of ball and bat with appropriate weight, and careful conditioning programs through throwing exercise in order to avoid elbow injuries.

  • The purpose of two player game is that a player beats an enemy. In order to win to various enemies, a learning of various strategies is indispensable. However, the optimal action to overcome the enemies will change when the game done over and again because the enemy's actions also change dynamically. Sol it is din-cult that the player aquires the optimal action and that the specific player keeps winning to various enemies. Species who have a competition relation and affect other's existence is called a coevolution. Coevolution has recently attracred considerable interest in the community of Artificial Life and Evolutionary Computation(1). In this paper, we apply Classifier System for agent team to two player game. A reward and a penalty are given to the used rules when the agent achieve specific action in the game and each team's rulebase are evaluated based on the ranking in the league. We show that all teams can acquire the optimal actions by coevolution.

Metaheuristic-hybridized multilayer perceptron in slope stability analysis

  • This research is dedicated to slope stability analysis using novel intelligent models. By coupling a neural network with spotted hyena optimizer (SHO), salp swarm algorithm (SSA), shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA), and league champion optimization algorithm (LCA) metaheuristic algorithms, four predictive ensembles are built for predicting the factor of safety (FOS) of a single-layer cohesive soil slope. The data used to develop the ensembles are provided from a vast finite element analysis. After creating the proposed models, it was observed that the best population size for the SHO, SSA, SFLA, and LCA is 300, 400, 400, and 200, respectively. Evaluation of the results showed that the combination of metaheuristic and neural approaches offers capable tools for estimating the FOS. However, the SSA (error = 0.3532 and correlation = 0.9937), emerged as the most reliable optimizer, followed by LCA (error = 0.5430 and correlation = 0.9843), SFLA (error = 0.8176 and correlation = 0.9645), and SHO (error = 2.0887 and correlation = 0.8614). Due to the high accuracy of the SSA in properly adjusting the computational parameters of the neural network, the corresponding FOS predictive formula is presented to be used as a fast yet accurate substitution for traditional methods.

  • In this study, we suggest that Copying Theory suggested by Pym could be effective in translating games. Languages used in games are based on English because of the history of games mainly developed in America. When people are playing games, people pursue effective communication. Because of this, they transform translated words into simple forms or original foreign languages to communicate each other for effective communication, The usage of English in game translation and communication support the idea that Copying strategy could be effective in translating games.

  • Since 2009, a new method of computing the percentage of victories is being used in the regular league of the Korean professional baseball. This method produced enormous results from the first year of application, and also had an effect on the team standings in 2010. In this paper, we have examined the effects this method had on the Korean professional baseball in 2009 and 2010. We also have discussed what the Korea Baseball Organization need to complement in using this method and suggested complementary measures.

A Critical Review on the Epilepsy-related Classification Systems Delineated in the Literatures both Western and East Asian Medicine : A Suggestion to Develope a New Classification (간질의 분류법에 대한 동서의학적 문헌고찰 및 새로운 제안)

  • The major purpose of this study is to evaluate the classification of epileptic seizure types and epilepsy described in the literatures of both Western and East Asian medicine, especially based on the two criteria- a theoretical and a practical aspect of the classification systems. Currently, the 1981 classification of epileptic seizure types, and the 1989 classification of epilepsy syndromes and epilepsies which were proposed and approved by the International League Against Epilepsy(ILAE) have been generally accepted worldwide, although a variety of modifications have been consistently suggested. A large proportion of epilepsy cases cannot be easily classified as either 'focal' or 'generalized' or as either 'symptomatic' or 'idiopathic', so they fail to be precisely fallen into any of the ILAE categories. Terms and concepts used in the East Asian medicine are also inadequate to identify epileptic seizure types and epilepsy syndromes as discrete diagnostic entities because of ambiguities in definition and use. Therefore, this article suggests an alternative approach not only more helpful in understanding mechanism of epilepsy but also more easily applicable and effective in clinical value.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis: Diagnosis and differential diagnosis

  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is comprised of a heterogeneous group of several disease subtypes that are characterized by the onset of arthritis before the age of 16 years and has symptoms lasting at least 6 weeks. The previous classification of JIA included seven different categories, whereas its current classification was compiled by the International League of the Association for Rheumatology, and replaced the previous terms of "juvenile chronic arthritis" and "juvenile rheumatoid arthritis," which were used in Europe or North America, respectively, with the single nomenclature of JIA. As mentioned above, JIA is defined as arthritis of unknown etiology that manifests itself before the age of 16 years and persists for at least 6 weeks, while excluding other known conditions. The clinical symptoms of JIA can be quite variable. Several symptoms that are characteristic of arthritis are not necessarily diagnostic of JIA and may have multiple etiologies that can be differentiated with careful examination of patient history. The disease may develop over days or sometimes weeks, thereby making the diagnosis difficult at the time of presentation. To make a clinical diagnosis of JIA, the first step is to exclude arthritis with known etiologies. Of note, late treatment due to excessive delay of diagnosis can cause severe damage to joints and other organs and impair skeletal maturation. Therefore, early detection of JIA is critical to ensure prompt treatment and to prevent long-term complications including the likelihood of disability in childhood.
