As a part of attempts to understand better mathematics classroom culture, this paper first reviews plausible factors which influence the mathematics teacher's own development of instructional goals. The proposed factors consist of teacher characteristics and sociocultural factors. The teacher factors include learning and teaching experience, knowledge, beliefs, and personality traits. The sociocultural factors include cultural and educational norms, curriculum development and administration, teacher education, and professional models with community, This paper then presents detailed interview questions to explore significant influences on the teacher's conceptions of mathematics and its teaching. The interview probes 12 topic areas: (a) early influences on becoming a teacher, (b) the decision to become a teacher, (c) the teacher education years, (d) early mathematics interests, (e) early teaching experiences, (f) career path, (g) influence of peers within the school, (h) influence of administrators, (i) professional development, (j) professional self-development, (k) mathematics teaching, and (i) educational policies.
In this study, we conducted classroom activities that are exploring and explaining visualized materials for problem solving of school mathematics with pre-service teachers in 2007~2009. After finishing these classroom activities, pre-service teachers recorded an afternote that includes changes of their thinking about mathematics and mathematics education through these activities in this study. We collected various opinions of pre-service mathematics teachers. From the analysis these data, we searched educational effects of our classroom activities. Through conducting the practice like these classroom activities of our study, pre-service mathematics teachers will have an opportunity of a practical training that supports the teaching of mathematical problem-solving. Moreover their PCK will be enhanced. Also, They will learn a good way to realize the aim of school mathematics curriculum.
Asian mathematics curricula and textbooks are being recognized in the United States as at least partial explanation for the higher mathematics achievement of students in Asian countries compared to students in the United States. As a result there is considerable interest among many educators in the United States in curricula from Singapore and curricula from Japan. In addition, researchers and educators at one university in the American heartland have been using the English translations of a Korean primary mathematics curriculum for professional development and assessment with groups of Missouri teachers for the purpose of enhancing teachers' understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, and in hopes of raising student achievement scores. A professional development initiative begun seven years ago and revived this year will entail a rigorous assessment which will be reported in 2009. Results of assessment of the earlier initiatives are reported here.
One of remarkable characteristics of 2007 revised mathematics national curriculum is the emphasis of communication in classroom. It does not mean only listening students' comments. In other words, it is different from presentation of individuals' thoughts. In the paper, teaching and learning practices required teachers who want to establish classroom culture supporting harmonious communication in mathematics instruction.
In this article we drew out five definition-methods in school geometry. They are called synonymous method, denotative method, analytic method. And we analyzed them theoretically. On our analysis we tried to identify the level of common sense and the level of science in definition of those two levels on the definition-methods of circle. While the definition-method in elementary school could be regarded as the level of common sense, that in middle school could be considered as the level of science. Finally, we made the following didactical comments. Definitions in school mathematics might have the levels as regard to their roles. Thus, Mathematics teachers, curriculum developers, and text authors all need to recognize the subtle differences in the level of definition-methods.
Although they are interested in Linear Algebra not only in science and engineering but also in humanities and sociology recently, a study of teaching linear algebra is not relatively abundant because linear algebra was taken as basic course in colleges just for 20-30 years. However, after establishing The Linear Algebra Curriculum Study Group in January, 1990, a variety of attempts to improve teaching linear algebra have been emerging. This article looks into series of studies related with teaching matrix. For this the method for teaching the concepts of matrix in relation to historico-genetic principle looking through the process of the conceptual development of matrix-determinants, matrix-systems of linear equations and linear transformation.
The main purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the 'logical reasoning skill' and performance in the logic unit that is part of the grade 9 syllabus in mathematics in Turkey. After the teaching of the logic unit, an achievement test, a general skills test and the test of logical reasoning were administered to the 80, 9th year high school students. Pearson Moments Correlation coefficient was used for the analysis of the data to determine the relations between the variables. In addition to that to obtain the most suitable regression explaining the students' performances in the logic unit, stepwise multiple regressions analysis was used. At the end of the study, statistically significant relations were found between the students' performance in the logic unit and their logical reasoning skills, their results of the shape recognition test from the general skills battery and their overall performance in the mathematics lesson.
This study is on the introduction of the natural logarithm by the quadrature of the hyperbola. In School mathematics curriculum, Logarithm is introduced formally. But in that introduction, students could't know the meaning of the natural logarithm and e well. Historically, natural logarithm is related to the quadrature of the hyperbola. So in this study we consider the introduction of the natural logarithm by the means of quadrature of the hyperbola and the significance of the introduction.
This study explores and compares Korean and U.S. elementary preservice teachers' analytic approaches of students' addition and subtraction computational strategies. Twenty-six Korean and twenty U.S. elementary preservice teachers participated in the study. Participants were asked to analyze mathematical approaches and errors from students' addition and subtraction operations. Preservice teachers' written documents were analyzed by applying open coding and inductive coding based on the grounded theory. As a result, the pattern of error analysis and interpretation of students' addition computations were similar for both Korean and U.S. preservice teachers whereas there were some differences in the analysis of students' subtraction computations. Both Korean and U.S. preservice teachers had difficulties identifying students' strategies and errors for a complicated and unconventional computational approach. Results also indicated that preservice teachers' noticing and interpretation of students' strategies and errors were influenced by their K-12 mathematics curriculum and teacher education program. This study suggests implications and future directions for teacher education, more contextualized teacher preparation programs and balanced connection to the K-12 curriculum.
In this article the conceptual meaning of expression, equation and identity used in Korean mathematics textbooks and American mathematics textbooks is compared and discussed. For this purpose definitions and examples in several mathematics textbooks which are used in Korean elementary school, the 1st grade of middle school and American middle school are investigated. It is founded out that at first there are some parts that give rise to misunderstanding and then there are differences between the Korean terminologies and their corresponding English counterparts. The definitions of expression, equation and identity are advised to examine in the view of middle mathematics curriculum.
