  • This paper reports on the main results of 3 study that compared students' beliefs, skills, and understandings in an innovative approach to differential equations to more conventional approaches. The innovative approach, referred to as the Realistic Mathematics Education Based Differential Equations (IODE) project, capitalizes on advances within the discipline of mathematics and on advances within the discipline of mathematics education, both at the K-12 and tertiary levels. Given the integrated leveraging of developments both within mathematics and mathematics education, the IODE project is paradigmatic of an approach to innovation in undergraduate mathematics, potentially sewing as a model for other undergraduate course reforms. The effect of the IODE projection maintaining desirable mathematical views and in developing students' skills and relational understandings as judged by the three assessment instruments was largely positive. These findings support our conjecture that, when coupled with careful attention to developments within mathematics itself, theoretical advances that initially grew out research in elementary school classrooms can be profitably leveraged and adapted to the university setting. As such, our work in differential equations may serve as a model for others interested in exploring the prospects and possibilities of improving undergraduate mathematics education in ways that connect with innovations at the K-12 level

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a hospital-based smoking cessation intervention for increasing continuous abstinence rate from smoking in patients with cerebral infarction. Methods: One-hundred and two smokers with cerebral infarction who decided to quit smoking were enrolled in the smoking cessation intervention from December 2012 to February 2015. The smokers underwent six consecutive times of individual intervention with nurse specialist on smoking cessation including education on behavioral modification, counseling for withdrawal symptoms, and anti-smoking advice over a 12-month period. Results: Among the total participants, the continuous abstinence rate from smoking changed from 79.4% at 1 month to 60.8% at 12 months after discharge. The continuous abstinence rate from smoking after 12 months was 88.5% in participants who completed the entire program (6 times), while 51.3% in participants who did not complete the entire program (${\leq}5$ times) (P=0.001). After adjustment for general and smoking-related characteristics, complete implementation of hospital-based smoking cessation intervention was significantly associated with continuous abstinence from smoking after 12 months (odds ratio: 5.93; 95% confidence interval: 1.45-24.22). Conclusions: The hospital-based smoking cessation intervention might be effective for smoking cessation in patients with cerebral infarction, especially when the intervention was implemented thoroughly.

  • In this paper, we propose a think-aloud program for acquiring abstraction concept. Think-aloud is a technique, which is good for teaching higher-order thinking skills to learner. We intend to propose a program for teaching abstraction concept to learners directly, as software education is being reinforced in the current education policy. For the study, we develop a program depending on ADDIE model. According to these steps, we analyzed related works such as computational thinking, think-aloud technique, and direct instructional model. After that, we split and structuralized the learning tasks for achieving a goal. And then, we constructed steps for the instruction and detailed contents of the program. We did a survey for verification to nine experts and we corrected the program according to it.

  • The purpose of this study was to review the definition of cognitive load (CL), the relationship between CL and instructional design, and to provide a viewpoint of CL in curriculum and instructional design in medical education. Cognitive load theory (CLT) makes use of three hypotheses about the structure of human memory: working memory (WM) is limited in terms of the amount of information it can hold, in contrast with WM, long term memory is assumed to have no limits and organizes information as schemata. CL indicates the mental load on the limitation of WM. CLT has been used to design instructional interventions that help to ease the learning process. Extraneous CL is related to irrelevant instructional interventions, while intrinsic CL is the complexity of the information itself. Germane CL is the cognitive process for acquiring schema formation. It is a necessary CL to achieve deeper comprehension and solve problems. The range of medical education includes complex, multifaceted and knowledge-rich domains with clinical skills and attitudes. Therefore, CLT may be used to guide instructional design in medical education in terms of decreasing extraneous CL, adjusting intrinsic CL and enhancing the germane CL.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutrition education using materials based on social cognitive theory. Education topics focused on improving health-related and dietary self-awareness and behavior capability in adolescents. Methods: Participants were recruited from a middle school for girls; 67 students (educated group, n=34 and control group, n=33) participated. The education group received 12 lessons in club activity class. Self-administered surveys were conducted for each group before and after the nutrition education program. The questionnaires consisted of variables such as self-efficacy, outcome expectation, outcome expectancy, knowledge, and dietary practices based on the social cognitive theory. Education satisfaction was evaluated using a five-point Likert scale for two sections: a) teaching and learning and b) education results. The data were analyzed using a t-test and Chi Square-test (significance level: p < 0.05). Results: In the education group, post-education, there were significant differences in self-efficacy (p < 0.05), knowledge (p < 0.01), and dietary practices (p < 0.05), whereas outcome expectation and expectancy did not show any significant differences. None of the variables showed any significant differences in the control group. Educational satisfaction scores were $4.38{\pm}0.12$ (teaching and learning) and $4.14{\pm}0.15$ (education results). Conclusions: This study showed that improving adolescent's awareness and behavior capability has a positive effect on their dietary practices. Moreover, this study suggested that a theory-based determinant should be considered to improve dietary behavior among adolescents.
