  • Occurrence of plant diseases is dependent on various factors in the agricultural system. Due to recent extensive environmental climate changes, i.e. global warming, agricultural systems such as planting dates and cultivars are being affected. Gradual transition in disease occurrence and incidence in the agricultural fields can also be affected by direct and/or indirect environmental changes. In this study, we evaluated disease occurrence and incidence in soybean plants to investigate whether it could be related with cultivars, planting dates and geographical differences in Korea in 2008. Soybean cultivars including 'Taekwang', 'Pungsan', 'Cheongja 3', 'Saeol', and 'Dawon' were planted in four different dates, May 15, June 1, June 15, and June 30, in two locations, Suwon, and Naju. Soybean diseases such as wild fire and bacterial pustule were mainly found depending on cultivars, planting dates, and areas. Wild fire occurred severely on cv. 'Taekwang' while bacterial blight did on cv. 'Dawon' among tested cultivars. Disease developments of wild fire and bacterial blight generally decreased in delayed planting regardless of cultivars.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics and yield of whole green rice grains during the ripening period. These were investigated using Hopumbyeo and Unkwangbyeo at two transplanting times and with two kinds of nitrogen fertilization. The transplanting times were May 30 and June 20, respectively, using 30-day seedling culture and transplanting conducted with 3 - 4 plants per hill in planting space of $15cm{\times}30cm$. During nitrogen fertilization, 9 kg and 18 kg was used, respectively. The harvest of the green whole rice grains was carried out on the 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, and 40th day after the heading date. The clum length was greater with later planting and with application of more nitrogen. The rice yield was higher with nitrogen fertilization of 18 kg/10 a when transplanted on May 30 for Hupumbyeo, and for Unkwangbyeo, was higher at 9 kg/10 a nitrogen fertilization when transplanted on May 30. The protein content of Hopumbyeo was higher when the nitrogen fertilizer was 18 kg/10 a, and that of Unkwangbyeo was lower than that when transplanting on June 20. The greenness was not related to the nitrogen fertilization level when transplanted on May 20 but for later transplanting, the greenness was higher when the nitrogen application was increased, and the greenness was the greatest about 30 days after the heading date.

  • Sesame cultivar Suweon 9 was sown at two planting time, June 19 and July 3, to study flowering and seed maturation process. Flowering began at 37-40 days after sowing at the 2-4th node and proceeded to upper node with the speed of 1.78 days (June 19 planting) and 1.56 days (July 3 planting) per node until Sept. 1. Sesame capsule reached its full size about 10 days after flowering. Number of sesame seed increased until 15 days, but seed weight gain occurred from 10 days to 35 days after flowering, that meant 25 days the actual seed filling period. The capsule flowered later than Aug. 14 remained immature. There was no more seed weight gain when average. temperature dropped below $20^{\circ}C$ (around Sept.15) and 50% of leaves had senesced. Discussion includes that sesame as an 8determinate plant may have independent source-sink relationship at each node.

  • This study was carried out to determine the optimum planting time for in vitromultiplied tuber of Pinellia ternata(Thunb.) Breit. The tubers were planted on April 20, May 20, June 20, July 20, August 20 and September 20 in 1990. Emergence ratios were 68 to 87% in any planting time except planting on July 20. The number of tubers per $m^2$ at harvest in plantings on May 20 and June 20 were significantly higher with 1,110 and 1,021, respectively, while in plantings after July 20, those were drastically decreased. As compared with fresh yield of planting on April 20(352kg /10a), that of May 20 was 109% and June 20 was 103%, while those of after July 20 were from 41% to 19%. There was a highly positive correlation between dry tuber yield and the number of tubers per $m^2(r=0.991^{**})$. Tuber yields for commercial use(diameter over 7.1mm) were high in planting on May 20(322kg /10a) and on June 20(299kg /10a). It was suggested that optimum field planting time for in vitro multiplied tuber of Pinellia ternata(Thunb.) Breit was from May 20 to June May 20.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of soil depth and planting density on the growth of lettuce, crown daisy, and strawberry on a rooftop condition using artificial soil as a growth media. The vegetable crops showed better growth for plant height (cm), plant width (cm), plant fresh weight (g), and Fo, Fm and Fv/m on 20cm depth soil than 10cm depth soil except strawberry. Planting density of $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$ did not show significant differences on the growth of the crops. Soil moisture content and EC were low for 10cm depth soil in lettuce plots, whereas there was no significant differences on soil moisture and EC between two soil depth in strawberry plots. Hunter's L, a, and b values showed the leaf color of lettuce dark green on 20cm depth soil and reddish on 10cm depth soil. Results showed that soil depth suitable for crop growth on rooftop conditions was 20cm rather than 10cm. Growth response of the crops showed no significant difference between $16/m^2$ and $64/m^2$, indicating that planting density of 64 $plants/m^2$ could be practiced on rooftop conditions. Lettuce growth rapidly changed in control treatment in which leaves were not pinched out, while slowly changed in plants which leaves were periodically pinched out. In the case of control plot, it was impossible to harvest because withering of lower leaves after blossom on June 22. The plant of crown daisy in which pinching was not conducted, blossomed on June 7, and the plants were removed since its aesthetical value was lost. Strawberry seemed to be a suitable vegetable crop for rooftop conditions based on its high covering rate and extended growth period until late October. The soil depth 20cm and planting density 64 $plants/m^2$ were suitable for vegetable crops on green roof system using artificial soil.

  • This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations for developing new varieties and cultural techniques for vegetable soybean at the Crop Experiment Station, Rural Development Administration, Suwon, Korea in 1992. Two vegetable soybean varieties, 'Hwaeom-putkong' and 'Seokryangputkong', and the other 'Jangyeobkong' for soy-paste were planted at three planting dates(April 15, May 15, June 15). The characteristics of growth, yield, and quality were compared between vegetable and soy-paste soybean genotypes in response to different planting dates.Vegetable soybean varieties, 'Hwaeomputkong' and 'Seokryangputkong' were more resistant to lodging, earlier in maturity, higher in the density of pod set on stem and percentage of poded nodes, and larger in grain size than Jangyeobkong for soy-paste. Earlier planting (April 15) of vegetable soybean varieties increased the yield of green pod as well as improved quality in number of green pods per 500g and length and width of green pod.

  • Purple com Saekso 1 was developed by Maize Research Institute (Hongcheon, Gangwon, Korea) and registered in 2011. Saekso 1 is a anthocyanin-rich hybrid variety that is yellow grain, purple husk and cob. Purple husk and cob of Saekso 1 is as a resource for the bioactive material by health food. In order to investigate optimum sowing date and planting density of Saekso 1. Agronomic characteristics were compared by sowing times April 25, May 15 and June 5. Husk dry weight were 68,72 and 70kg·10a-1, respectively. Cob dry weight were 90, 92 and 92kg·10a-1, respectively. Content of cyanidin-3-glucoside in husk were 0.56, 0.62 and 0.56% and in cob were 0.19, 0.14 and 0.17%. Therefore, the sowing time to increase husk and cob weight and content of cyanidin-3-glucoside is appropriate for planting in mid-May. The number of plants in planting density trial was 9,400, 7,000, 5,700 and 4,700 plants in 10a area. Plant height at each trial were 249, 250, 246 and 248cm, respectively. Husk dry weight were 76, 67 and 63 and 60kg·10a-1, respectively. Cob dry weight were 112, 92, 87 and 81kg·10a-1, respectively. Content of cyanidin-3-glucoside in husk were 0.70, 0.71, 0.71 and 0.75% and in cob were 0.21, 0.28, 0.26 and 0.20%. Therefore, appropriate sowing time was in mid-May and planting density was 5,700~7,000 plants·10a-1 in order to increase the yield and content of cyanidin-3-glucoside of purple com in South Korea.
