Changes in Nursing Students' Moral Judgment and Ways to Evaluate the Effect of Ethics Education (간호학생의 도덕 판단력 변화와 윤리교육 효과측정 방법)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate changes in nursing students' moral judgment throughout their professional education, and to identify more suitable ways to evaluate ethics education by using P (%) scores only and P (%) scores with 4th scores. Methods: The study consisted of cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys as well as a study using a nonequivalent control group pre-post experimental design. The participants were nursing students attending a university in Gyeongju, Korea. The data were collected from September 1, 2006 to October 31, 2009 using the Korean version of the Defining Issues Test. Results: In the cross-sectional survey, there was no significant difference in the nursing students' moral judgment scores according to their school grades. In the longitudinal survey, nursing students' moral judgment scores did not change significantly over the duration of their education. In the nonequivalent control group study, the effectiveness of nursing ethics education was identified by P (%) scores only. Conclusion: The evidence indicates that nursing professional education does not influence the development of nursing students' moral judgment, and using P (%) scores only seems to be a better way compared to other ways to evaluate the effects of nursing ethics education.

Validity Analysis of the Korean Version of the Moral Judgment Test (MJT) (도덕적 판단력 도구 MJT의 한국적 표준화 연구)

  • This study aims to standardize Moral Judgment Test (MJT) for measure the level of moral judgment to apply to Korean society. The questionnaire of MJT was composed of two stories: Worker's Dilemma; Doctor's Dilemma. The procedure of this study was started with translation, making final questionnaire through several times pre-test, survey, then did analyze. The degree of reliability was .669. To verify validity, this study carried 3 kinds of tests as follows: the Order of Preferences, Quasi-simplex Structure, Cognitive-Affective Parallelism. Through these tests, this study showed that Korean-translated version questionnaire of MJT is significant and good base to measure moral judgment.

Effect of Debriefing Based on the Clinical Judgment Model on Simulation Based Learning Outcomes of End-of-Life Care for Nursing Students: A Non-Randomized Controlled Trial (임상판단모델에 근거한 디브리핑 적용이 임종간호 학습성과에 미치는 효과: 비무작위 대조시험설계)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify effects of debriefing based on the clinical judgment model for nursing students on their knowledge, skill performance, clinical judgment, self-confidence and learner satisfaction during simulation based end-of-life care (ELC) education. Methods: Simulation based ELC education was developed in six steps as follows: selection of learning subjects and objects, development of learning tools, a trial run of simulation-based education, students' skill training, and evaluators' training. Forty-eight senior nursing students (25 in the experimental group and 23 in the control group) participated in the simulation-based ELC education using a high-fidelity simulator. Debriefing based on the clinical judgment was compared with the usual debriefing. Results: ANCOVA showed that there were differences in knowledge (F=4.81, p=.034), skill performance (F=68.33, p<.001), clinical judgment (F=18.33, p<.001) and self-confidence (F=4.85, p=.033), but no difference in satisfaction (t=-0.38, p=.704) between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: This study found that debriefing based on the clinical judgement model is effective for supporting nursing students for reflecting on clinical judgment and improving their diverse competencies in complex clinical settings such as ELC.

The Role of Processing Fluency in Product Innovativeness Judgment

  • The metacognitive experience of the ease or difficulty with which new, external information can be processed, referred to as 'processing fluency,' has been shown to influence a wide range of human judgments including truth judgments, familiarity judgments, risk perception, evaluation, and preference (see Alter and Oppenheimer 2009 for a review). The current research explores the possibility of a consumer's product innovativeness judgment based on the difficulty of processing new information. In specific, this study examines if the inferential link between (dis)fluency-(un)familiarity can feed into the perception of innovativeness. This study also explores how a consumer's processing motivation can moderate the consumer's reliance on processing fluency in judgments and how the influence of fluency can vary depending on judgment task orders. In an experiment, participants rated a new product's innovativeness and then indicated their product attitude (or vice versa depending on the judgment task order condition) after reading a product review article that was printed in either an easy-to-read or a difficult-to-read font (for fluency manipulation). The findings show that low need for cognition individuals infer higher product innovativeness when processing product information is difficult rather than easy, consistent with the common assumption that 'new information is more difficult to process than familiar information.' The findings also suggest that once low fluency is attributed to innovativeness, it may no longer lead to a negative response to the product. High need for cognition individuals' judgments on product innovativeness are not affected by fluency. The findings also demonstrate a judgment task order effect on the use of fluency in judgments (e.g., Xu and Schwarz 2005). This study provides the first evidence that an individual's fluency experience can be used as a source of information in product innovativeness judgments especially under low processing motivation conditions. The findings can help marketers better understand the malleability of consumer judgments and perceptions of product characteristics (e.g., product innovativeness) by demonstrating an interesting interplay of processing fluency, processing motivation, and judgment task-related contextual factors.

A Longitudinal Study on Moral Judgment Development in Nursing and Medical Students (간호대생과 의대생의 도덕판단력 발달에 관한 종단적 연구)

  • Purpose: In this longitudinal study, we examined the moral judgment level and its related factors, such as individual characteristics. The result of this study will provide baseline data to establish policy of ethics education for college students and healthcare professionals. Method: We enrolled 37 nursing students and 20 medical students as the subjects in a university in Suwon, Korea. We conducted a questionnaire on the subjects using Korean version of Defining Issues Test(DIT) to analyze the subjects' moral judgment level. Collected data was coded using ASCII document and scored using Fortran program for computer. Then the data was statistically analyzed by SPSS Version 10.0. Result: Nursing students' moral development score at each stage were consistently higher at stage 5A across 4-years rather than other stages. On the other hand, medical students' moral development score were consistently higher at stage 4 than other stages. There was no significant difference in the change P(%) score at each academic year in both groups. In the perspective of the subjects' general characteristics, P(%) score showed no significant in both groups. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, further studies will examine the correlation between curriculum and moral judgment development in detail. Moreover, we suggest that the current ethics education should be developed and evaluated in more realistic manner.

Judgment Method of the Rehabilitation Extent using a Spherical Type Digital Finger Force Measuring System (구형 디지털 손가락 힘측정장치를 이용한 재활정도 판단 방법)

  • This paper presents the judgment method of the rehabilitation extent using a spherical type digital finger force measuring system (SDFFMS). Stroke patients can't use their fingers because of the paralysis of their fingers, but they can recover with rehabilitative training. The SDFFMS has been already developed by Kim (Author of this paper), and the finger grasping forces of normal people and stroke patients could be measured using it. But the SDFFMS could be not used to judge the extent of their rehabilitation, because the judgment method using it is not yet developed. In this paper, the characteristics tests for the grasping forces of normal persons and stroke patients were performed using the SDFFMS, and the judgment method of the rehabilitation extent was developed using the results. The tests confirm that the rehabilitation extent of stroke patients could be judged using the developed judgment method.

  • As current manufacturing processes require high spindle speed and precise machining, increasing accuracy by reducing volumetric errors of the machine itself, particularly thermal errors, is very important. Thermal errors can be estimated by many empirical models, for example, an FEM model, a neural network model, a linear regression model, an engineering judgment model etc. This paper discusses to make a modeling of thermal errors efficiently through backward elimination and fuzzy logic strategy. The model of a thermal error using fuzzy logic strategy overcome limitation of accuracy in the linear regression model or the engineering judgment model. And this model is compared with the engineering judgment model. It is not necessary complex process such like multi-regression analysis of the engineering judgment model. A fuzzy model does not need to know the characteristics of the plant, and the parameters of the model can be mathematically calculated. Like a regression model, this model can be applied to any machine, but it delivers greater accuracy and robustness.

A Study on the Meaning, Effects, and Procedure of Recognizing Arbitral Awards (중재판정 승인의 개념, 효력 및 절차에 관한 연구)

  • When a court recognizes an arbitral award, it acknowledges that the award is valid and binding, and thereby gives it a set of effects similar to those of a court's judgment, among which res judicata is the most important. The res judicata effect of an arbitral award generally forbids parties to an action from subsequently litigating claims that were raised in a prior arbitration. In common law countries, res judicata may also preclude re-adjudication of issues raised and decided in a prior arbitration. The Korean Arbitration Act acknowledges the rights of parties to an arbitral award to seek not only an enforcement judgment but also a recognition judgment on an arbitral award. Therefore, the question arises whether or not the winning party in an arbitration must acquire a recognition judgment on the arbitral award in order to enjoy the effects of a recognized award. However, according to the case law and generally accepted views, an arbitral award is automatically recognized without any additional procedure, as long as it satisfies the requirements for recognition. Therefore, in order to resolve this question, it is desirable to eliminate the statutory clause that stipulates the right to seek recognition judgment.

Evaluation by Fuzzy Checklist

  • Checklist method is rapid and comprehensive to evaluate in practice. Check items are commonly rated by subjective utility function; i.e., evaluator's significant judgment. Since human judgment includes fuzziness (vagueness) inherently in spite of its significance, fuzzy set theory is useful in this case. The paper illustrates a evaluation method using fuzzy checklist where check items are rated as fuzzy numbers. Pairwise comparison data is used to determine the weights of check items, since it has comparative advantage for human's fuzzy judgment. Sample of BASIC program is provided for microcomputer. When uncertainty is due to subjectivity or imprecision of data, this method can be applied to practical problems widely.

The Effects of the Difference of Ultrasonic Damped Rate on the Judgment of Defects (초음파 감쇠율의 차가 결함판정에 주는 영향)

  • In this study, on automatic ultrasonic testing system is used to detect defects of flawtest specimen. We study the effects of the difference of ultrasonic damped rate of the different materials on the judgment of defects. The results indicate that the difference of sensitivity compensating quantity is 2dB, and the judgment is correct over $90\%$ when a specimen is judged as a defect when it exceeds third grade.
