This study is to establish the situation of inter-basin transfer from Seomjin river basin to Yeongsan river basin using SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool). Firstly, the SWAT modeling was conducted for each river basin. After, the inter-basin transfer was established using SWAT reservoir operating parameters WURESN (Water Use Reservoir Withdrawn) and inlet function from Juam dam of Seomjin river basin to Gwangju stream of Yeongsan river basin respectively. Each river basin was calibrated and validated using 13 years (2005~2017) data of Seomjin- Juam dam reservoir storage (JAD), release, transfer and Yeongsan-Mareuk (MR) stream gauge station. The results of root mean square error RMSE, Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency NSE, and determination coefficient R2 of JAD were 2.22 mm/day, 0.62 and 0.86 respectively. The RMSE, NSE, and R2 of MR were 1.38 mm/day, 0.69 and 0.84 respectively. To evaluate the downstream effects by the transferred water, the water levels of 2 multi-function weirs (SCW, JSW) in Yeongsan river basin and the Gokseong (GS) and Gurye (GR) stream gauge stations in Seomjin river basin were also calibrated. The RMSE, NSE, and R2 of SCW, JSW, GS and GR were 1.49~2.49 mm/day, 0.45~0.76, 0.81~0.90 respectively.
In order to investigate the amounts of trace elements flowing into reservoir, and to elucidate the relationship between trace element mobility and fraction size, the stream water and sediment samples were collected from thirty-two sites of the 3rd or 4th order stream within watershed surrounding the Juam reservoir. Chemical analyses of trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) for all samples were completed, and additionally cationi and anion for stream water samples. Considering the distribution of rocks and contamination sources in watershed, the eight stream sediments were selected from typical sites representing study areas, and we determined the concentrations of trace elements according to size fractions ($2\;mm{\sim}200\;{\mu}m$, $200{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$, $100{\sim}50\;{\mu}m$, $50{\sim}20\;{\mu}m$ and < $20\;{\mu}m$). The correlation relationships between concentrations and size fractions of stream sediments were important to identify the hydro-geochemical behavior of trace elements that flow into Juam reservoir. Stream waters showed four water types (Ca-Mg-$HCO_3$, Ca-Na-$HCO_3$-Cl, Ca-Na-$HCO_3-SO_4$, Ca-Na-$HCO_3$) depending on pollution sources such as coal mine, metal mine, farm-land and dwellings. Concentrations of trace elements increased clearly with the decrease in size fractions of stream sediments. Concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn increased dramatically in silt size (< $20\;{\mu}m$) fraction, while As had high concentrations in sand size ($2\;mm{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$) fraction in downstream sediments of metal mines. These indicate that Cu, Zn, and Pb moved into Juam reservoir easily in the adsorbed form on silt size grain in sediments, and As was transported as As-bearing mineral facies, resulting in its less chance to reach into Juam reservoir.
Temperature profiles were observed to understand seasonal variation of thermal structures in the Juam reservoir from March 2000 to May 2001. Heat flux which affects thermal structures was calculated by observed water temperature and meteorological data. Temperature became homogeneous vertically by convection due to the surface cooling in winter. Maximum heat loss through the surface (109.45W/$m^2$) occurred in December. There was a horizontal gradient of water temperature in winter. The temperature was $3^{\circ}C$ at upstream and $5^{\circ}C$ near the dam. The surface temperature increased by the increase of solar radiation in spring and summer. Maximum heat gained through the surface was 101.95 W/$m^2$ in July. Maximum surface temperature was $29^{\circ}C$ in August, whereas the bottom water was $7^{\circ}C.$ Surface mixed layer became thicker and its temperature decreased by surface heat loss in fall and winter.
Bacterial community structure in the Juam Reservoir was analysed using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique from April 2005 to January 2006. Total bacterial numbers varied in the range of 1.58 ${\sim}\;2.73{\times}\;10^6\;cells\;mL^{-1}$ proportional to the concentration of chi-a and had the minimal value in January. The ratios of ${\alpha}\;{\cdot}\;{\beta}\;{\cdot}\;{\gamma}$-subclass proteobacteria and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium (CF) group to total bacteria ranged from 45.1% to 77.5%, and the ratios of ${\alpha}\;{\cdot}\;{\beta}\;{\cdot}\;{\gamma}$-subclasses to total bacteria in June and September with the concentration of chi-a measured were lower than those ratios in April and January. It suggests that enriched growth of Microcystis aeruginosa may inhibit the metabolic activlty of ${\alpha}\;{\cdot}\;{\beta}\;{\cdot}\;{\gamma}$-subclass proteobacteria. However, the ratio of CF group bacteria represented no large change depending on algal bloom. In terms of nitrifying bacteria, the numbers of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria ranged from 9.9 ${\times}\;10^4\;to\;25.5\;{\times}10^4\;cells\;mL^{-1}$ with sharp fluctuation whereas those of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria varied in 8.7${\sim}9.8{\times}10^4\;cells\;mL^{-1}$ without noticeable change except the maximal value of $20.3{\times}10^4\;cells\;mL^{-1}$ in January maybe due to the high DO.
In order to properly manage the quality of water in Juam Lake, distributions and growth characteristics of submerged plants in Boknae flood control reservoir were investigated. In addition, the total amount of nutrient load by submerged plants were investigated. The total vegetation area was $1,146,849m^2$ of total flood control reservoirs ($1,848,568m^2$) before flooding. By August 19, all of Boknae flood control reservoir was flooded during rainy season. Dominant plants were MISSA (Miscanthus sacchariflorus), SCPMA (Scirpus fluviatilis) and CRXDM (Carex dimorpholepis) which occupied 87% of all flood control reservoirs. The total amounts of organic matter loads at different submerged plants were great in the order of CRXDM ($501,642kg\;area^{-1}$) > SCPMA ($20,987kg\;area^{-1}$) > MISSA ($3,413kg\;area^{-1}$). The total amounts of nitrogen loads by CRXDM, SCPMA and MISSA under different submerged plants were 56%, 3.9% and 0.8%, respectively. The total amounts of phosphorus loads at different submerged plants were on the order of CRXDM ($1,842kg\;area^{-1}$) > SCPMA ($78kg\;area^{-1}$) > MISSA ($14.8kg\;area^{-1}$). Therefore, the results of this study suggest that organic matter, T-N and T-P in water quality of Juam lake were strongly influenced by submerged plants in flood control reservoir.

This study analyzes potentially hazardous sub-watersheds from non-point source pollution areas using an HSPF model. The watershed of the Juam dam reservoir was divided into 29 sub-watersheds, and the flow, BOD, TN and TP concentration for the Juam dam watershed were evaluated from 2009 to 2012 using a watershed model, with a warming period from 2009 to 2010. The results of the watershed model agreed well with the flow and water quality field measurements. The calculated average non-point source loadings were BOD of 8.8 and $9.1kg/day/km^2$ in 2011 and 2012, respectively; TN of 9.7 and $10.1kg/day/km^2$ in 2011 and 2012, respectively; and TP of 0.30 and $0.33kg/day/km^2$ in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The non-point source loading of the Bonghwa stream watershed was calculated, and predominantly assessed upstream of the Boseong river. Additionally, the Miryeok, Jangpyeong, Yuleo, Guam, Seokgyo, Mundeok, Incheon, and Bongnae stream watersheds, with extensive agricultural areas, were assessed to be potentially hazardous areas in terms of non-point source management. In this study, HSPF model was applied in order to aid in the selection of non-point source reduction facilities for the Juam dam watershed, where they were evaluated as to whether they would be applicable for non-point source management.
Juam lake is a major water reservoir for the industrial and agricultural activities as well as the residental life of Kwangju and Chonnam regions. However, the water quality of the lake is getting worse due to a large quantity inflowing to the lake. The excessive growth of algae by the overfertilization may result in water treatment problems and also the interference with desirable water uses of navigation, aesthetics, recreation, and aquatic ecosystem. Thus the purpose of this study is to investigate the species and their amount of planktons in the lake and the relationship between the P loading amount and the chlorophyll-a used as a primary productivity index. The results of the investigation show that (1) the predominant species of algae are Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena affinis, Melosira granulata, Synedra acus, and Coelastrum cambricum, (2) the trophic state of the lake can be classified as eutrophic, and (3) there is close relation between the P loading amount and the chlorophyll-a.
