  • Angiogenesis is a fundamental process in reproduction and wound healing. Under these condition, neovascularization is tightly regulated. Unregulated angiogenesis may lead to several angiogenic diseases, and is thought to be indispensible for solid tumor growth and metastsis. The construction of new vascular network is a multistep cascade involving basement membrane degradation, endothelial cell proliferation, endothelial cell migration, and tube formation. Newly reported anti-angiogenic agents in oriental medical field have targeted both specific and multistep stages in the angiogenic process. From recent approach in oriental medical field with several herb medicines including activating blood flow and removing blood stasis medicine(活血化瘀藥), it may be possible in the future to develope specific anti-angiogenic agents that offer a less toxic potential therapy for cancer and angiogenic disease.

Stroke patients were interviewed by oriental medicine doctors who used standard operation procedures for this study. A questionnaire was completed by a question-and-answer form between patients and doctors after explanation of details to patients and patients' agreement given. Results: Distributions of pattern identification in stroke patients differed by age groups. Dampness-Phlegm pattern was more common in the younger group aged under 80 years, while Yin-Deficiency pattern was more common in the older group aged over 80 years. Conclusions: In this study, we found a character of distribution of pattern identification by age in stroke patients within one month after stroke onset. We have concluded that these differences should be considered in the management and treatment of stroke patients.

  • Paljinhangahm-dan is an Oriental herbal formulation for its ability to modulate cancer cell growth and survival. This research was performed to study the anti-cancer effects of Paljinhangahm-dan water extract(PHWE) in human pro myelocytic leukemia(HL-60) cells. After HL-60 cells were routinely cultured, tetrazolium-based colorimetric(MTT) assay was performed for cytotoxicity test. To explore the mechanism of cytotoxicity. I used several measures of apoptosis to determine whether this processes was involved in PHWE-induced cell death in HL-60 cells. In addition, the experiment was practised 1 H-NMR spectroscopy to examine molecular structure of PHWE. This study suggested that PHWE control cancer cell growth through of apoptosis with less cytotoxicity in normal cells.
