  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to review the diagnostic methods of neurologic symptoms by non-organic causes. Methods: We experienced a case of a motor and sensory disturbance patient without abnormal findings in the diagnostic tests. Using this process, we became aware that it is important to remember some of the methods when treating patients who are suspicious of neurologic symptoms by non-organic causes. Results: First, we should perform a variety of diagnostic tests to exclude the organic causes. Second, we should persistently observe a consistency of the patient's symptoms and attitude. Finally, we should perform a neurological examination in order to acquire the objective physical findings. Conclusions: Because there are limitations in the methods above, we have to be aware of making a mistake regarding the disability by organic causes as that by non-organic causes.

  • We made a comparative study, A patient who had suffered dizziness and ataxia took Hyungbangsabaek-san(荊防瀉白散) at first and next took Hyungbangdojeock-san(荊防導赤散). He was diagnosed as a Soyangin suffering chest knotting syndrome(結胸證) by Sasang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) and took two kinds of herbs in a row. We observed his phase of dizziness and ataxia with the conditions of stool and urine excavation, pink eye, sweating, and tongue color and tongue coating. When he took Hyungbangdojeock-san these conditions improved more than when he took the other one and his dizziness and ataxia also improved. Hyungbangdojeock-san was more useful when the severity of the disease was shallower and he had more exterior syndromes than Hyungbangsabaek-san.

  • Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is an idiopathic syndrome characterized by the formation of granulation tissue in the anterior cavernous sinus or superior orbital fissure, producing a painful ophthalmoplegia. We experienced a 66-year-old woman whose conditions improved through oriental medical treatment. We treated the patient with herbal medicine Liqiqufeng-san (理氣祛風散) and electro-acupuncture at Cuanzhu (瓚竹, BL2) and Yuyao (魚腰, Extra) acupuncture points with 1${\sim}$50Hz for 15min. After treatment, the patient's symptoms improved considerably. This result suggests that oriental medical treatment has good effect on Tolosa-Hunt syndrome.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for a headache (suspected CPSP) patient with a history of cerebral infarction. Methods: We treated the patient using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines-Kamiseokyong-tang, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and chuna). The treatments were measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) for headache and post neck pain. General health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale. Results: We observed improvements in the NRS, NDI, and EQ-5d scores after the treatments. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may effectively treat headaches (suspected CPSP) with accompanying cerebral infarction.

  • In western medicine, there are some reports about herbal medicine induced hepatitis, but in oriental medicine, there are few reports about that. We experienced one case of drug acute cholestatic-hepatitis in the treatment of oriental medicine for HNP. We treated the patient with acupuncture, physical therapy and herb medicine. The patient's symptoms improved after two weeks of treatment. In the course of treatment, the patient intermittently complained of general weakness, nausea, yellowish urin, dyspepsia, and abdominal discomfort. We recognized that total bilirubin(7.2mg/dl), direct bilirubin(5.5mg/dl), serum transaminase(AST 360U/L, ALT 354U/L), alkaline phosphatase(16.6 K/A), urobilinogen(++) and bilirubin(++) were elevated. We diagnosed drug induced hepatitis. We stopped giving herb medicine and began giving Saeng gan gunbi-tang and Injin-oryung-san. Saeng gan gunbi-tang and Injin-oryung-san have been used to treat hepatic disease and have been known to have beneficial effects. After 3weeks on medication, the clinical symptoms and liver function improved. So, we report this case to bring more attention to the safety and toxicity of herbal medicine.

Results: This study showed that clinical symptoms of two Moya moya patients were improved by the diagnosis and treatments of oriental medicine. Conclusions: Diagnosis and treatment of two patients with Moya moya disease are accurate and effective. However, more cases are required to study in oriental medicine in order to prove the availability and to be applied universally.

  • Pneumonia is an inflammation that forms at the mesopulmonum and alveolus that is also an acute infection with fever and cough. It is difficult for doctors to diagnose pneumonia in elderly patients, due to the variety of symptoms. For this reason, it, with its complications, is a major cause of death for the elderly. In this case, improvement was seen in an elderly patient diagnosed with pneumonia by X-ray, and by using Si-Kyung-Ban-Ha-Tang-Ka-Mi-Bang as a way of Kong-Bo-Kyum-Si, because in this case pneumonia was presumed Dam-Yel-Ong-Pye and Ki-Eum-Yang-Huh due to the weakness associated with old age. This thesis proposes that the elderly are better treated differently from other pneumonia patients due to the weakness that comes with old age.

  • Conversion Disorder is a disorder whose predominant feature is a loss or alteration in physical functioning that suggests a physical disorder but that is actually a direct expression of a psychological conflict or need. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV) guidelines for Conversion Disorder include these definitions: A psychosocial stressor produces a psychological conflict that is believed to help initiate or exacerbate the illness The symptoms are not under conscious control, etc. While functional disabilities are common with conversion disorders, physical and laboratory abnormalities are absent or minor in comparison with the patient's subjective complaints. Symptoms of Conversion Disorder are similar to those of stroke. But the mechanism of Conversion Disorder is similar as that of Stagnation Syndrome of Ki (氣鬱證) in Oriental medicine. Gaegyeolseogyeong-tang has been used to treat women who suffer from Conversion Disorder induced by the Stagnation Syndrome of Ki (氣鬱證). After application of the Gaegyeolseogyeong-tang for 7 days, symptoms and signs improved dramatically.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of needle-embedding therapy to facial paralysis patient after acoustic neuroma surgery. The patient was treated by basic oriental medicine treatment. We evaluated the effect of Needle-Embedding Therapy by using Yanagihara's unweighted grading system and subjective satisfaction score. The final Yanagihara's score was higher than before the treatment. The patient was satisfied after Needle-Embedding Therapy. Needle-Embedding Therapy was effective against facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery. Further studies will be required to identify the beneficial effect of Needle-Embedding Therapy in facial paralysis after acoustic neuroma surgery.

  • Although dysphagia and globus is a common comlication in Functional gastrointestinal disorder, there are few studies or reports about its treatment in oriental medicine. This study was to report the effect of Bokryungyeum-tang in Functional gastrointestinal disorder patients with dysphagia. Functional gastrointestinal disorder patients with dysphagia hospitalized in our hospital were treated by Bokryungyeum-tang every day. three times a day for two weeks. The patient showed constant improvement during the two weeks. Not only their objective measure, but also their subjective symptoms such as chest discomfort, insomnia, and depression improved too. This suggests that Bokryungyeum-tang is quite effective when treating functional gastrointestinal disorder patients with dysphagia.
