Quantitative identification of the fluxon-flow modes in a stack of intrinsic Josephson junctions of $Bi_2$$Sr_2$Ca$Cu_2$$O_{8+x}$ single crystals

  • We observed the splitting of the fluxon-flow branches in the current-voltage characteristics of serially stacked intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) formed in $Bi_2$$Sr_2$$CaCu_2$$O_{ 8+x}$ single crystals in the long-junction limit. Stacks of IJJs were sandwiched between two Au electrodes deposited on the top and the bottom of the stack using the ‘double-side cleaving technique’. In all the samples studied, the branch splitting started occurring for a dense fluxon configuration around 2 T and became more distinct in a higher magnetic field range. This observation can be explained in terms of switching between different Josephson fluxon modes in resonance with the collective plasma oscillations induced by both inductive and capacitive coupling between stacked IJJs.   • We have fabricated and tested a simple circuit of the rapid single-flux-quantum(RSFQ) four-stage shift register using a single layer high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) thin film structure with 9 step-edge Josephson junctions. The circuit includes two read superconducting quantum interference devices(SQUID) and four stages. To establish a robust HTS RSFQ device fabrication process, we have focussed on the reproducible process of sharp and straight step-edge formation as well as the ratio of film thickness to step height, t/h. The spread of step-edge junction parameters was measured from each 13 junctions with t/h=1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 at various temperatures. We have demonstrated the simplified operation of the shift register at 65 K.

  • In this thesis, Josephson junction using high-Tc superconducting multi-layer thin film has been fabricated by on-axis RF magnetron sputtering method. And, the characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction, SEM and the measuring system of critical current density. The physical properties of multi-layer superconducting thin films were also analyzed with the measured results. To fabricate the multi-layer superconducting thin films, the optimum partial pressure of Argon and Oxgen and the temperature of substrate were measured. Also, YBaCuO thin film was grown on MgO and $SrTiO_3$ substrates by rf-sputtering and LGO thin film of 30 A was epitaxially grown on the YBaCuO thin film as a josephson junction with the same condition. The schottky barrier at the contact surface between YBaCuO/LGO and YBaCuO/Au and the energy gap of 0.5 ${\sim}$ 0.6 mV in Nb were observed from the dI/dV-V of YBaCuO/LGO/Au/Nb and YBaCuO/Au/Nb.

Enhancement of heat exchange using On-chip engineered heat sinks

  • We report a method for improving heat exchange between cryo-cooled large-power-dissipation devices and liquid cryogen. Micro-machined monolithic heat sinks were fabricated on a high integration density superconducting Josephson device, and studied for their effect on cooling the device. The monolithic heat sink showed a significant enhancement of cooling capability, which markedly improved the device operation under large dc- and microwave power dissipation. The detailed mechanism of the enhancement still needs further modeling and experiments in order to optimize the design of the heat sink.

  • To investigate the effect of interference current between pairs and quasi-particles, we have calculated the change I-V characteristic curve of resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction with external microwave by simulation of modified Stewart-McCumber model. Such rf-induced constant-voltage steps and the immunity against to noise were found to be changed in the presence of interference current.

Effects of d-wave symmetry on the critical current of YBCO step-edge Josephson junction

  • We have studied the effects of d-wave symmetry on the critical current of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ step-edge Josephson junctions. The critical current along various misorientation angle was measured and analyzed with the concept of grain-boundary junctions with d-wave symmetry. Experimental results of c-oriented YBCO step-edge junctions with various in-plane misorientation angles were qualitatively in good agreement with the theory. The out-of-plane misorientation angle is usually formed between two grains with the c axes perpendicular to each other and is normally not controllable.

  • We have simulated and laid out a Single Flux Quantum(SFQ) AND gate for Arithmetic Logic Unit by using XIC, WRspice and Lmeter. SFQ AND gate circuit is a combination of two D Flip-Flop. D Flip-Flop and dc SQUID are the similar shape form the fact that it has the loop inductor and two Josephson junction We obtained perating margins and accomplished layout of the AND gate. We got the margin of $\pm$38%. over. After layout, we drew mask for fabrication of SFQ AND sate. This mask was included AND gate, dcsfq, sfqdc, rs flip-flop and jtl.
