It is known that Sung-gyu Jeon and several other Korean artisans were invited to "Joseon-Najeon Company" of Kimura Tenko in Takaoka, Japan to teach the skills of making lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, however these artisans discovered a new tool called fretsaw during the visit, which can easily cut nacre. The introduction of fretsaw in the 1920s in Korea innovated the Jureumjil(filing) technique and dramatically changed the style of modern Korean lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl. In this paper, I will focus on the case of Sung-gyu Jeon, Kimura Tenko and "Joseon-Najeon Company". I will also examine why and how the Korean lacquerware artisans went to "Joseon-Najeon Company" in Takaoka and exactly what they did there. This analysis will help in discovering how the Korean artisans' experience in Takaoka affected their works after they came back to Korea.

This study explores the kinds and types of dyes used in the Joseon Dynasty. Some literature including "Sanga Yorok", "Gyuhap Chongseo", "Imwon Gyeonjeji" were reviewed for this purpose. The findings are as follows. The colors obtained from the dyes were divided into seven color series, such as red, yellow and orange, green, blue, purple, brown, gray and black. These are practical color categories differed from abstract five cardinal colors [五方色]. The diachronic dyes used during the Joseon Dynasty were safflower and Japanese alder bark for red, indigo leaves for blue, gromwell for purple, chestnut tree bark for brown. The representative dyes used in the late Joseon Dynasty were safflower and sappan wood for red, wild pear tree bark and Pentapetes phoenicea for yellow and orange, indigo leaves for blue, sappan wood and gromwell for purple, mulberry tree for brown, and Chinese ink for gray. Common dyes used both in Joseon and China were safflower and sappan wood for red, pagoda tree blossom for yellow, a combination of pagoda tree blossom (or Amur cork tree) and indigo leaves (or sediment) for green, indigo leavers or sediment for blue, sappan wood and hollyhock for purple, and a combination of indigo leaves and Galla Rhois for gray and black.
Joseon is mainly an agricultural country and its main source of national revenue is the farmland tax. Since the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, the assessment and taxation of agricultural land became one of the most important subjects in the national administration. Consequently, the measurement of fields, or the area of various plane figures and curved surfaces is a very much important topic for mathematical officials. Consequently Joseon mathematicians were concerned about the volumes of solids more for those of granaries than those of earthworks. The area and volume together with surveying have been main geometrical subjects in Joseon mathematics as well. In this paper we discuss the history of volumes of solids in Joseon mathematics and the influences of Chinese mathematics on the subject.

The purpose of this study is to analyze historical records of what the trees had been planted like by establishment and management of the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty so that it could be utilized for historical records to manage the trees in the Royal Tombs. The research method was to analyze the related keywords for 40 trees out of 42 trees in the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty reffering to "The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮王朝實錄)," and "Neungji(陵誌)". There are two types of planting called Jeongsik(定植) Bosik(補植) in the Royal Tombs. Jeongsik(定植) is a planting method by Salleungdogam(山陵都監), the office in charge of construction of the royal tomb when they were building the royal tomb. Every tree additionally planted after building up the royal tomb was called Bosik(補植). The types of tree planting the composition and management of the royal tombs of Joseon are as follows. First, the first planting for landscaping was carried out during the process of building the province. Second, after the formation of Shanung, all the plants were planted by Wangmyung as additional plants. Third, due to the deforestation in the late Joseon period, additional plants were planted in the fertile plains. Fourth, trees were damaged due to natural disasters, and trees were planted together with the construction of the botanical gardens. Fifth, in the 22nd year of King Jeongjo, all the royal families' graves were regularly planted. This study aims to investigate the history of forest landscape management for the restoration of the royal tombs of Joseon.
This paper presents a new classification and code system on the Archives of the Government-general Museum of Joseon in the National Museum of Korea. Three points were noted that since the Museum belonged to the Government-general of Joseon, the classification system of the Archives should be established to comply with the Archives system of the Government-general of Joseon; based on the concept of the functional provenance, it is necessary to establish a classification system in accordance with the organization structure of the Government-general Museum of Joseon; a systematic and simple classification codes should be given based on the classification system to improve the convenience of searching and using the official document. The classification system and its code are proposed in the order of major function, medium function, small function, and detailed function. The major function of the Archives is 'A-Educational affairs', medium function 'Museum.' The small function may be divided into General affairs (01), Temple (02), Scenic Spot and Natural Monument (03), Historical Site (04), and Museum (05). The detailed function and detailed sub-functions are categorized by the various work assignments in each work units. I hope that this new classification system will make a contribution to organizing and utilizing the Archives of the Government-general Museum of Joseon in the National Museum of Korea.
This study examined how Bangryeong(方領) had been changed from ancient times in China to the Joseon dynasty[朝鮮] in Korea by analyzing Bangryeong in literature, relics, paintings, etc. Based on this, we also analyzed the form of Bangryeong itself and clothes with Bangryeong using excavated relics from the Joseon dynasty. First, from early Chinese literature, it was confirmed that meaning of "Bangryeong" was a collar attached straight to a garment so that if the garment is put on with the fronts intercrossed with each other the back neck part of the collar is naturally squared. Second, from literature in the Joseon dynasty, it was confirmed that the meanings and forms of Bangryeong were diversified and had different characteristics throughout different time periods. Different from its original meaning in China, Bangryeong came to mean an intentionally designed square shape. Third, Bangryeong from the Yuan(燕) and Ming(明) Dynasties were found among relics excavated in China. Bangryeong from Yuan was Cheolik[帖裏] worn by men, and Bangryeong from Ming was found in women's dresses. Fourth, Bangryeong relics from the Joseon dynasty examines its form in detail. Bangryeong was found in various forms of clothes, and this was consistent with findings from literature review.
This paper, is in the focus of the fact that was popular in the Joseon Dynasty, was clearly private background and fashionable aspects of its creation. In Section 2, as the background of the epidemic of of the Joseon Dynasty, and was derived creative situation of . is the "left Order live music" relationship center rather, was that it was created by the Academy belongs is highlighted "Hanlin year". As a result, collapses the relationship between the order raw Korea early left, in conjunction with the boast to debauchery and evaluated surface Shinyoung of successor Geibun of this academy, be epidemic in the Joseon Dynasty it is the could be. In Chapter 3, and two to the original, it was examined the epidemic surface of of the Joseon Dynasty. The epidemic of surface, in the conventional research and are relatively detailed, but in this paper, while accommodating the existing research results, of consideration "Hanlim feast" has led to Geibun of Korea "immune new Feast" was observed a trend surface is placed around the fact. As a result, , the Joseon is that it has been singing on the occasion official four-kan and Geibun center, first Nara are exempt new feast bonds back to the four Hall again in Geibun, usually it can be seen that it is spread in the Scholar-official and gisaeng's. Lower limit has been singing can be up to around the late 17th century it has been speculated through the time of Gimumanjun.
This thesis mainly deals with how 'count of Ryang' was used in Joseon dynasty. Count of Ryang means how many purlins were used in the building with longitudinal section. As a result, the notion of Ryang in Joseon dynasty does not differ from now one. But the usages of that are slightly different to the present day. In Joseon dynasty, count of Ryang mainly was appeared with another word, count of Kan. Count of Kan has two meanings. One is the length, and the other is the area of building. When they used the count of Ryang combined with Kan, count of Kan had the meaning of length. By doing that, count of Ryang indicates the size of flank, count of Kan indicates the length of front. In the 19th century, count of Ryang looks similar to the past, but count of Kan shows another aspect. It did not indicate the length but the area of building. Through this study, although the usages of Ryang were different to the present, the concepts of Ryang were similar in Joseon dynasty.
In this paper we survey on the geometric development in the history of Joseon mathematics. We have relatively many research papers on the history of equations in Joseon but the history of geometry is limited to that of trigonometry (gugosul). We survey on the results on the whole geometry including the introduction of western geometry in Joseon. Joseon mathematics developed differently during several different periods. We investigate how geometric theories developed during those periods and the meaning behind them. We do not claim that our survey is anywhere close to a complete one. This is rather a preliminary attempt to collect research results to plan our research following those of our predecessors.
The Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) left behind a wealth of documentary heritage, including collections of literary works, personal letters, and journals, as well as public documents such as Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty (Joseon Wangjo Sillok), Diaries of the Royal Secretariat (Seungjeongwon Ilgi), and State Protocols (Uigwe). Such heritage also includes personal diaries that have been highly regarded for their frank and vivid records of people's lives in the Joseon period. There have been great diaries published and intended for reading by the Korean public, including War Diaries (Nanjung Ilgi, 1592~1598) by Yi Sun-sin and Diaries of Jehol (Yeolha Ilgi, 1780) by Park Ji-won. Unfortunately, a great majority of these personal records remain unknown to the world. Such great records have not been given an opportunity to be documented properly, but are left outside public attention, abandoned to be damaged and destroyed. Few personal diaries of the Joseon period were written on good-quality paper. After the death of their authors, these diaries were left to be kept by their descendants; this explains why many of these records have been in poor condition, particularly when compared with the public records published by the government of Joseon, such as Sillok and Uigwe, even when these were lucky enough to be taken care of by the authors' descendants. Even after surviving a long time, many of these personal records remain in the form of manuscripts, written in semi-cursive and cursive scripts of Chinese characters, thus making it even more difficult for the people of the current generation -- most of whom have not been given an opportunity to learn Chinese characters at school -- to take care of their documentary heritage properly. Meanwhile, it is also true that, as the value of the public records published by the government of Joseon as historical materials has grown, they are used more often as content for TV dramas such as Daejanggeum. At the same time, there have been increasingly louder voices citing the need for the study, preservation, and management of the personal diaries from Joseon. Considering the situation, this study provides a general overview of the personal diaries of Joseon as recently surveyed by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, as well as their characteristic features, subjects, and backgrounds. This study is expected to contribute to future research on the preservation and management of the personal diaries of Joseon.
