  • Impact-echo test is a non-destructive testing method to determine dynamic properties of a material. This presentation introduces the experimental set-up and procedure of the test for rock specimens. In addition, the test results of domestic rocks collected in 5 different areas, a cement mortar and aluminium alloy are presented. The test results include resonance frequencies of P- and S-wave as well as damping ratios of the described 7 different materials. The differences between dynamic and static values of elastic moduli are about 10%, while the dynamic Poisson's ratios are greater than the static Poisson's ratios by at least 0.07. The damping ratio is dependent on the joint density and degree of weathering of a rock specimen.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and the relevant risk factors for lumbar spondylosis (LS) among middle-aged and elderly rural Korean residents and to explore the association between radiographic LS and lower back pain (LBP) in relation to age and gender. Methods : This community-based, cross-sectional study evaluated 1512 subjects with available radiograph. The prevalence of LBP was obtained using a questionnaire and disability resulting from LBP was measured using a validated Korean version of the Oswestry disability index (ODI). In lumbar spine radiographs, vertebral levels from L1/2 to L4/5 were evaluated for the presence of osteophytes and joint-space narrowing (JSN), and Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading was applied. Results : Of 4261 subjects aged 40-79 years, data from 1512 subjects were included. The prevalence of radiographic LS indicated by grade ${\geq}2$ osteophytes and JSN were 53.9 and 15.8%, respectively. Seventy-three percent of subjects had KL grade ${\geq}2$ spondylosis and LBP was present in 36.5% of subjects. Although LS was more common among males, the prevalence of LBP was higher among females. Age, male gender and history of hand or knee arthritis were risk factors for LS. LS was significantly associated with LBP mostly among females over 60 years old and correlated with the ODI after adjusting for age and gender. Conclusion : Our study among rural Korean residents revealed a high prevalence of LS and LBP. The association between LS and LBP was observed mostly among females and LS was significantly correlated with the severity of back pain.

  • In spite of economy has a critical cycle such as, production, distribution and consumption, we hardly concentrated our study to distributional system and behavior. Especially in Korea, Traditional idea had tried to ignore the people who work in this economic value at all. Manufacturers, other than retailers and wholesalers, had a belief that the manufacturing can control distributional channels forever. Unfortunately, technological and educational advances caused the quality equalization among developing and developed countries as well as among big and small manufacturers in their products. By this reason, economists are searching the economists dark continet' mentioned by Peter Drucker as a new source of wealth. According to a report by well-known economic research institute in Switzerland, Korea has classified in the lower level group in terms of international compatitive power. At the same time, business firms complain that they are suffering from lack of SOC and infrastructures. As an important mean to overcome the economic bottleneck, economists suggest in improve our distributional atmosphere. Basically, distributional study has two sub-fields as: commercial and physical distributions, Distributional system mainly concerns about to shorten the distances of time and space between production and consumption. The closer the distances, the higher efficiency can be achieved. Building distributional system will cost, but tile results will save social costs. Based on this idea, economists proposed several ways to cut the distances and to save costs, Naturally, they hope their beliefs can be adapted by business firms and governments. But frequently, their theories doesn't make any fruit. This paper has studied about the composition of joint transportational and distributional systems. And, even though there's no Marshall in tile real world at this point authors are trying to define the transportational and physical distributional costs, the most powerful factor that can impact to economic decision making.

  • Digital video compression technique has played an important role that enables efficient transmission and storage of multimedia data where bandwidth and storage space are limited. The new video coding standard, H.264/AVC, developed by Joint Video Team(JVT) significantly outperforms previous standards in compression performance. Especially, variable length code(VLC) plays a crucial pun in video and image compression applications. H.264/AVC standard adopted Context-based Adaptive Variable Length Coding(CAVLC) as the entropy coding method. CAVLC of H.264/AVC requires a large number of the memory accesses. This is a serious problem for applications such as DMB and video phone service because of the considerable amount of power that is consumed in accessing the memory. In order to overcome this problem in this paper, we propose a variable length technique that implements memory-free coeff_token, level, and run_before decoding based on arithmetic operations and using only 70% of the required memory at total_zero variable length decoding.

  • Electromechanical impedance (EMI) based structural health monitoring is performed by measuring the variation in the impedance due to the structural local damage. The impedance signals are acquired from the piezoelectric patches that are bonded on the structural surface. The impedance variation, which is directly related to the mechanical properties of the structure, indicates the presence of local structural damage. Two traditional EMI-based damage detection methods are based on calculating the difference between the measured impedance signals in the frequency domain from the baseline and the current structures. In this paper, a new structural damage detection approach by analyzing the time domain impedance responses is proposed. The measured time domain responses from the piezoelectric transducers will be used for analysis. With the use of the Time Frequency Autoregressive Moving Average (TFARMA) model, a damage index based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is defined to identify the existence of the structural local damage. Experimental studies on a space steel truss bridge model in the laboratory are conducted to verify the proposed approach. Four piezoelectric transducers are attached at different locations and excited by a sweep-frequency signal. The impedance responses at different locations are analyzed with TFARMA model to investigate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is very sensitive and robust in detecting the bolt damage in the gusset plates of steel truss bridges.

  • In this paper we discuss spent fuel management options in the Republic of Korea (ROK) from two interrelated perspectives: Centralized dry cask storage and spent fuel pyroprocessing and burning in sodium fast reactors (SFRs). We argue that the ROK will run out of space for at-reactors spent fuel storage by about the year 2030 and will thus need to transition centralized dry cask storage. Pyroprocessing plant capacity, even if approved and successfully licensed and constructed by that time, will not suffice to handle all the spent fuel discharged annually. Hence centralized dry cask storage will be required even if the pyroprocessing option is successfully developed by 2030. Pyroprocessing is but an enabling technology on the path leading to fissile material recycling and burning in future SFRs. In this regard we discuss two SFR options under development in the U.S.: the Super Prism and the Travelling Wave Reactor (TWR). We note that the U.S. is further along in reactor development than the ROK. The ROK though has acquired more experience, recently in investigating fuel recycling options for SFRs. We thus call for two complementary joint R&D project to be conducted by U.S. and ROK scientists. One leading to the development of a demonstration centralized away-fromreactors spent fuel storage facility. The other involve further R&D on a combined SFR-fuel cycle complex based on the reactor and fuel cycle options discussed in the paper.

  • Recently, the repair and recycling of damaged mechanical parts via metal additive manufacturing processes have been industrial points of interest. This is because the repair and recycling of damaged mechanical parts can reduce energy and resource consumption. The directed energy deposition(DED) process has various advantages such as the possibility of selective deposition, large building space, and a small heat-affected zone. Hence, it is a suitable process for repairing damaged mechanical parts. The shaft is a core component of various mechanical systems. Although there is a high demand for the repair of the shaft, it is difficult to repair with traditional welding processes because of the thermal deformation problem. The objective of this study is to propose a repair procedure for a damaged shaft using the DED process and discuss its applications. Three types of cases, including a small shaft with a damaged surface, a medium-size shaft with a worn bearing joint, and a large shaft with serious damage, were repaired using the proposed procedure. The microstructure and hardness were examined to discuss the characteristics of the repaired component. The efficiency of the repair of the damaged shaft is also discussed.

  • There are several dedicated individual chambers for sports that are supplied and used, but none of them are multi-pressured all-in-one chambers that can provide a sport-multi environment simultaneously. In this study, we design a multi-pressure (positive / atmospheric / negative pressure) integrated chamber that can be used for the sport-multi-artificial environment system. We presented new chamber designs with enlarged space for the tall users and then carried out structural analysis with maximum stress and structural safety. Under the targeted allowable pressure conditions, maximum stresses occurred at the joint of the shell and the entrance, the structural safety of the chamber was evaluated with the allowable stress of its material. As a result of the structural analysis of the multi-pressure integrated chamber, the maximum stress for the positive pressure and negative pressure conditions was much smaller than the allowable stress of its material. And as a result of the structural safety evaluation, it was confirmed that the design of the final prototype for the chamber was structurally safe by satisfying the safety factor of 2 or more.

  • The effects of directional fracture tensor components and first invariant of fracture tensor on deformation moduli and shear moduli of fractured rock masses is analyzed based on regression analysis performed between 3-D fracture tensor parameters and deformability of DFN blocks. Using one or two deterministic joint sets, a total of 224 3-D discrete fracture network (DFN) cube blocks were generated with various configurations of deterministic density and probabilistic size distribution. The fracture tensor parameters were calculated for each generated DFN systems. Also, deformability moduli with respect to three perpendicular direction of the DFN cube blocks were estimated based on distinct element method. The larger the first invariant of fracture tensor, the smaller the values for the deformability moduli of the DFN blocks. These deformability properties present an asymptotic pattern above the certain threshold. It is found that power-law function describes the relationship between the directional deformability moduli and the corresponding fracture tensor components estimated in same direction.
