  • It is known that cold water appears and fog frequently forms in the southwest coastal waters of Korea in summer. The authors investigate the time and place. of cold water existence, and also whether the cold water affects the occurrence of fog formation. As a result, cold water begins to appear around Daeheugsando at the early summer. It gets colder with times and cold water area moves toward southwest of Jindo in mid-summer, then disappears in this area around mid-Oct. Fog mostly forms in April through August and most frequently occurs at Chukdo(Jindo) where sea surface temperature shows lower than that at the adjacent area. Accordingly it is taken that the cold water is considerably contributed to form the dense and frequent fog around Jindo area.

  • The lectin-binding patterns in the testis of the sexually matured Jindo dog were investigated to study the distribution of glycoconjugates in the seminiferous tubule under light and transmission electron microscopy. Positive reactions to Wheat germ agglutinin(WGA) and Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) were observed in the Sertoli cell and in the residual body of spermatid with a stronger reaction in the Sertoli cell to the lectins than in the residual body. Strong reactions to Soybean agglutinin(SBA) and Peanut agglutinin(PNA) were observed in the acrosome vesicles of the Golgi- and cap-phase spermatid, while a moderate reaction was observed in the acrosome-phase, maturation-phase spermatid and the residual body. The acrosome area of the spermatid reacted intensively to Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin( GS-I) when the cell was in the acrosome-phase and maturation-phase, and the same reaction to the GS-I was observed in the residual body. However, the seminiferous tubule did not react to Ulex europeus agglutinin I(UEA-I). The gold-labelling of the Sertoli cells with DBA resulted in positive reactions of the Sertoli cell column and processes when observed under the electron microscopy, while the Golgi-, cap- and acrosome-phase spermatids reacted positively to SBA in the peripheral low-dense area of the acrosome vesicle of spermatid. Based on these results, we concluded that differences in the lectin-binding pattern of the seminiferous tubules were recognized in the Jindo dog compared to other animals.

  • Hermaphroditism occurs rarely in human and animal populations. Previously, in Korea, The hermaphrodite dog in American Cocker Spaniel dogs have been reported in six cases. However, in this case, we found a hermaphrodite dog in Korean native Jindo dog. The characteristics were its enlarged os clitoris that was shown a reddish fingerlike structure protruding from the vulva. The dog was diagnosed as hermaphroditism with ovotestes. To our knowledge, this report is the first case of hermaphroditism in Korean native dog.

  • Jindo Hongju is a traditional liquor in Korea. The characteristic of Hongju are its unique flavour and red color which is extracted from the root of gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon). It is due to these color and flavour that Hongju attracts visual charm. However, the commercial value of Hongju is reduced because of the discoloration of red pigment during storage. Therefore, factors which cause the discoloration of red pigment and methods to prevent discoloration were investigated. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows. The factors that cause the discoloration were visible light, temperature (beyond $40^{\circ}C$), pH (above 10) and inorganic ion ($Cu^{2-}$). Among all the additives added, Cystein (100 ppm) was the most effective inhibitor of pigment discoloration.

  • This study is planned to discover the behavior of Korean peasants cope with the changes of structure last 30 years. So, I have surveyed the activists of Jindo Peasants Association through questionnaire. The outcome of survey are as follows; First, Peasants movement have been become weakened and the hope of future have disappeared. Although they have resisted the pressure of structural changes zealously, their life conditions have worsened. So, Peasants movement have been become weakened and they have no alternative choice. Second, The economic situations of all activist those who surveyed have worsened and there is no exits. If looking only at the surface of things, the socio-economic situations of Jindo peasants activists show a tendency to polarization. But, to tell the truth, overall immiseration have occurred at Jindo area. Third, confusion of their sense of values and weakening of self-esteem have occurred among the Jindo peasants activists. It is because that farming which is evaluated high in respect to cultural and industrial perspective, have been eliminated and disregarded. Especially, worsening of earnings and expenses make the peasants to be in the worse situations.

  • This investigation was conducted on 249 Jindo dogs aging from 2 to 12 months to determine body type and external appearance of the dogs. The results of this investigation were as follows. 1. The withers height of male dogs growed rapidly during the period between 2 months and 7 months of age, and was 22.94cm and 49.77cm, respectively. Afterward the growth rate slowed down up to 12 months, 53.33cm. The growth rate of female was similar to male, and the withers height was 22.91cm, 46.81cm, 48.70cm at 2, 6 and 12 months of age. 2. For male and female the body length was 27.21, 27.23cm at 2 months, 51.40cm, 51.62cm at 6 months, 58.33, 52.15cm at 12 months, respectively. Growth rate of the body length was very rapid from 2 to 6 months of age, but afterwards the growth rate was slow and somewhat retarded. 3. For male and female, the withers height to body length ratio was 100 : 109.4 and 100 : 107.1 in 12 months old group. 4. Cross over between the sexes in growth rate occurred between 5.3 to 6.5 months of age for wither height, between 6.0 to 7.2 months for hody length, respectively. 5. The average chest girths of male and female were 31.46, 30.46cm at 2 months, 54.92, 52.20cm at 7months, 60.25, 57.90cm at 12months, respectively. The growth rate of chest girth was rapid between 2 to 7 months of age and gradual between 7 to 12 months. 6. The average skull lengths of male and female were 11.76, 11.32cm at 2 months, 21.83, 19.60cm at 12 months, respectively. The average head widths of male and female were 8.37, 7.94cm at 2 months, 15.47, 12.46cm at 12 months. 7. Erected type of ear was completed from oblique type at 6 months in male and 7 months in female. • The trunk and limb of the Jindo, Korean native dog was measured in the present study. One hundred and ninety five Jindoes were randomly selected from the 1,985 dogs in the Jindo County in August 1998, which were screened by the judging committee of the County and registered by inserting electronic chips in the withers. They were about a year and half old, and were white and fawn dogs. A total of 18 parts of the trunk and limb were measured using calipers and tapes. The average height at the withers was 50.67 cm in dogs and 47.48 cm in bitches. The average body length was 52.99 cm in dogs and 50.33 cm in bitches. And the average height : body length ratio was 104.70 in dogs and 106.08 in bitches. No differences were observed between the Jindoes of the two coat colors in these measurements. The results of this study would be useful for compiling the official standard for the adult Jindo.

  • Hemoglobin, albumin and transferrin phenetypes observed in a population of 255 dogs of various breeds by agar gel electrophoresis for hemoglobin and albumin, and by starch gel electrophoresis, for transferrin. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The hemoglobin phenotypes were classified as HbAA, HbAB and HbBB and the frequencies of appearence were 91.77, 6.27 and 1.96%, respectively. Gene frequency studies of $Hb^A$ and $Hb^B$ showed the $Hb^A$ gene to have a frequency of 94.9% and $Hb^B$ gene to have a frequency of 5.1. The frequency of hemoglobin phenotypes of the Korean Jindo dog (ylelow) was HbAA 76.19%, HbAB 17.46% and HbBB 6.35% and HbBB was recognized only in the Korean Jindo dogs. 2. The albumin phenotypes were calssified as AlbAA, AlbAB and AlbBB and the frequencies of appearence were 28.71, 43.57 and 27.72% respectively. Gene frequency stduies of $Alb^A$ and $Alb^B$ showed the $Alb^A$ gene to hate a frequency of 50.50% and $Alb^B$ gene to have a frequency of 49.50. The frequency of albumin phenotypes of the Korean Jindo dog was 26.32% for AlbAA, 34.21% for AlbAB and 39.47% for AlbBB. The frequency of albumin phenotypes of the Korean Jindo dog was slightly different from others and gene frequency of $Alb^B$ was 56.58. 3. Transferrin studies resulted in findings of 10 different phenotypes and frequencies of transferrin phenotype were 30.08% for $TfA_1A_1$, 8.02 for $TfA_2A_2$, 2.11 for TfBB, 4.64 for $TfC_1C_1$, 1.69 for $TfA_1B$, 41.35 for $TfA_1C_1$, 5.49 for $TfA_2C_1$, 0.84 for $TfA_2C_2$ and 3.79 for $TfBC_1$. Gene frequency studies of $Tf^A$, $Tf^B$ and $Tf^C$ showed the gene to have a frequency of 63.08% for $Tf^A$, 4.85 for $Tf^B$ and 32.07 for $Tf^C$ 4. Transferrin studies revealed two different band patterns on starch gels with a strong and weaker stained one. The $TfC_2C_2$ and $TfA_2A_2$ which were found in the Korean Jindo dog only showed a weaker stained band and the gene frequency of $TfA_1A_1$ was highly recognized in this dog.

  • This study was conducted to determine the protein requirement level in adult Jindo dog (Korea Jindo Dog) through nitrogen balance experiments. 12 female dogs aged 36~38 weeks old (for early stage) or aged 45~49 weeks old (for late stage) were fed one of 3 diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein. Body weight of dogs were measured during the 12 days of feeding trial, and feces and urine were collected last 3 days of the trial period. In early stage of Jindo dog, average daily gain of dogs fed experimental diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein were -38.33, -16.25 and -12.71g/d, respectively. There was a significant differences between 17 and 21% of crude protein treatments (p<0.05) and calculated retained nitrogen were -0.29, -0.04 and -0.03g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d, respectively. In late stage of Jindo dog, average daily gain of dogs fed experimental diets containing 17, 19 and 21% of crude protein were -34.05, -28.71 and -28.28g/d, and calculated retained nitrogen were -0.33, -0.06 and 0.09g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d, respectively, and were significantly higher (p<0.05) in dogs fed 21% of crude protein diet than those of other dogs. In early stage and late stage of adult Jindo dog, a calculated linear regression equation for nitrogen intake (x) and nitrogen retention (y) were y = 0.7484x-1.18 ($R^2$ = 0.9923) and y = 0.88231x-1.0894 ($R^2$ = 0.9982) and the requirement of crude protein were estimated as 9.85g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d and 7.72g/kg$BW^{.75}$/d from above equation.
