  • The purpose of this work is to general approach to numerically simulating wear in rolling and sliding contact area between wheel and rail interface based on the analysis of dynamics characteristics with general MBS package. A simulation scheme is developed that calculates the wear at a detailed and various level. The estimation of material removal follows Archard's wear equation which states that the reduction of volume is linearly proportional to the sliding distance, the normal applied load and the wear coefficient and inverse proportional to hardness. The main research application is the wheel-rail contact of Korea High Speed Railway.

  • When the walls and floor of a tunnel are excited by a train, a ground vibration energy is transmitted to the surface and to footing of a nearby buildings. Excessive vibration affected to a building structure causes undesirable effect to the structural safety and the perception on residents in building. In this paper, a simple approach is introduced to predict how much vibration, in terms of level and spectra, is transmitted through the ground from the tunnel vibration excitation. A high rise building on a tunnel is selected as an application example of this case study.

  • This paper deals with a new methodology for topology optimization in which the topology of the design domain may change during the shape optimization process. To achieve this, the concept of the topological gradient is introduced to compute the sensitivity of an objective function when a small hole is drilled in the domain. Based on shape and topological sensitivity values, the shape and topology of the design domain may be simultaneously changed during design iterations if necessary. To verify the advantages and also to facilitate understanding of the method itself, two electrostatic design problems have been tested by using 2D finite element analysis: the first is the inverse problem of a simple dielectric model and the second is the rotor design of a MEMS actuator.

  • In this paper there are different methods used to study the voltage stability, such as the P-V curve method. Jacobian method and the voltage collapse proximity indicator(L-index) method. The P-V curve method is to check operating margin from the maximum operating point. The Jacobian method is to check the eigenvalue or the minimum singular value of the load flow Jacobian matrix. If the power system is unstable, one of the eigenvalues, at least, has crossed the imaginary axis. The L-index method is to quantify how to close a particular operating point. This paper describes these methods to select the best location of FACTS and demonstrate the effectiveness of STATCOM of voltage stability on the IEEE 9-bus system.

  • Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is the major neurohormone secreted during the night by the vertebrate pineal gland. The circadian pattern of pineal melatonin secretion is related to the biological clock within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus in mammals. The SCN coordinates the body's rhythms to the environmental light-dark cycle in response to light perceived by the retina, which acts mainly on retinal ganglion cells that contain the photopigment melanopsin. Calbindin-D9k (CaBP-9k) is a member of the S100 family of intracellular calcium- binding proteins, and in this review, we discuss the involvement of melatonin and CaBP-9k with respect to calcium homeostasis and apoptotic cell death. In future studies, we hope to provide important information on the roles played by CaBP-9k in cell signal transduction, cell proliferation, and $Ca^{2+}$ homeostasis in vivo and in vitro.

  • A new thermal bimorph actuator for large out-of-plane displacement is designed, fabricated and tested. The deflecting beam is composed of polyimide, heater, and polyvinyl difluorides with tetrafluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE). The large difference of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of two polymer layers (polyimide and PVDF-TrFE) can generate a significant deflection with relatively small temperature rise. Compared to the most conventional micro actuators based on MEMS (micro-electro mechanical system) technology, a large displacement, over 1 mm at 20 mW, could be achieved. Additionally, we can achieve response time of 14.6 ms, resonance frequency of 12 Hz, and reliability ability of $10^5$ cycles. The proposed actuator can find applications where a large vertical displacement is needed while maintaining compact overall device size, such as a micro zooming lens, micro mirror, micro valve and optical application.

  • This paper presents experimental results of the attitude control for a two-rotor system with 3-DOF(degree-of-freedom). Two DC motors are equipped at the two ends of a rectangular beam to generate lift force and the relation between motor voltage and lift force is found experimentally. And inertial sensors are mounted at the center of the beam to measure the roll angle and a complementary filter is designed to get the angle during DC motors driving. A controller with nonlinear compensation, integrator and state feedback to achieve asymptotic tracking for a step input and reject input disturbance is designed and experimented.

  • Since the change of the radial electromagnetic force is a main cause of noise and vibration of the SRM, this paper proposes a method to reduce the change of the electromagnetic force of an SRM. The technique is based on the control of the current shape associated with each phase using switches of the converter to drive an SRM. And we analyze the relation between the derivative of the radial electromagnetic force and the phase currents. A simulation is given to demonstrate our results.

  • This paper proposes an indirect fault detection method for an onboard degaussing coil system, installed to reduce the underwater magnetic field from the ferromagnetic hull. The method utilizes underwater field signals measured at specific magnetic treatment facilities instead of using time-consuming numerical field solutions in a three-dimensional space. An equivalent magnetic charge model combined with a material sensitivity formula is adopted to predict fault coil locations. The purpose of the proposed method is to yield reliable data on the location and type of a coil breakdown even without information on individual degaussing coils, such as dimension, location and number of turns. Under several fault conditions, the method is tested with a model ship equipped with 20 degaussing coils.

  • This paper presents the optimum design of the slit type linear induction motor(LIM). For the analysis of the slit type LIM, as the boundary problem, the equivalent circuit is composed from the analysis method given the slit pitch boundary condition. Using the deterministic method and the stochastic method among the optimization methods, each of the optimum design variables is derived. The analysis result by the proposed method is compared with the experimental result.
