Performance analysis of a horn-type rudder implementing the Coanda effect

  • The Coanda effect is the phenomenon of a fluid jet to stay attached to a curved surface; when a jet stream is applied tangentially to a convex surface, lift force is generated by increase in the circulation. The Coanda effect has great potential to be applied practically applied to marine hydrodynamics where various lifting surfaces are being widely used to control the behavior of ships and offshore structures. In the present study, Numerical simulations and corresponding experiments were performed to ascertain the applicability of the Coanda effect to a horn-type rudder. It was found that the Coanda jet increases the lift coefficient of the rudder by as much as 52% at a jet momentum coefficient of 0.1 and rudder angle of $10^{\circ}$.

  • The characteristic of jet impinging on the concave surface were analyzed through thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) and numerical investigation. Under a jet Reynolds number of 6600, nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-surface distances (H/d) were changed 5mm and 10mm and H/d=2 and 5. The RNG k-ε turbulence model can accurately predict the distribution of Nusselt number, compared to other models (SST k-ω, realizable k-ε). Heat transfer characteristics varied with the nozzle diameter and H/d, with a secondary peak noted at H/d =2, due to vortex-induced flow detachment and reattachment. An increase in nozzle diameter enhanced jet momentum, turbulence strength, and heat transfer.

Empirical Correlations for Penetration Height of Liquid Jet in Uniform Cross Flow - A Review

  • The empirical correlations for the prediction of penetration height of liquid jet in crossflow are reviewed and classified in this study. Around thirty different correlations had been proposed by many investigators. It has generally known that the penetration height of a liquid jet in a cross-flow is a function of the liquid to air momentum flux ratio and the normalized downstream distance from the injector. However, several researchers incorporated the Weber number, liquid-to-water or air viscosity ratio, pressure ratio or Reynolds number, temperature ratio in the empirical correlations. The existing correlations can be grouped as correlations in a power-law, logarithmic, and exponential forms, respectively. Correlations in a power-law form can be further classified as three groups such as basic form, Weber number form and other parameters form. It should be pointed out that correlations in a logarithmic form in terms of Weber number or any other parameters could not be found. Universal correlation has still not been established due to the significant discrepancies between various correlations suggested to date. Several of the studies reported the significant discrepancies of predicted values by the existing correlations. The possible reasons for discrepancies will be summarized as measurement technique, assumptions made in defining terms in the liquid to air momentum flux ratio, difficulties in defining the boundaries of the liquid jets, and nozzle/injector geometry. Evaluation of validity for the correlations proposed recently by several investigators is essentially required. Those include eight power-law forms, two logarithmic forms, and one exponential form.

  • 전단 동축 분사기의 Inner-stage와 Outer-stage의 기체 분사 비율 변화에 따른 축방향 유동 분포 특성과 분무 분열 특성을 실험적으로 연구였다. 무차원 측정 거리를 Z/d=100까지 변화시킴에 따라 운동량 교환, 공기역학적 항력, 점성 혼합의 영향으로 완전 발달된 유동의 형태를 나타내었다. Inner-stage의 기체분사와 Outer-stage의 기체 분사의 영향은 Z/d=5 이내의 영역에서 간섭받지 않고 분무 초기에 Inner-stage에서 분사된 기체 전단력에 의해 분열됨을 파악할 수 있었으며, Z/d=10 이상의 영역에서 완전 발달된 유동으로 변화하며, 유동의 혼합이 진행됨을 관찰 할 수 있었다. Inner-stage의 운동량 플럭스 비 0.84 이내에서 Outer-stage의 운동량 플럭스 비가 증가함에 따라 SMD가 감소하는 경향을 나타내었으며, Inner-stage의 운동량 플럭스 비가 1.38 이상의 조건에서 SMD의 분포가 유사하게 나타나는 경향을 관찰할 수 있었다.

  • A jet injected normally into a cross flow has been found to have the cross section of a horseshoe shape. It occurs by a twin vortex motion in the region downstream of the jet injection. Such a flow is inherently and highly three-dimensional and numerical calculations should play an important role. The three-dimensional momentum equations with buoyancy effect and energy equation are solved to obtain the velocity distributions, center-line trajectories, cross sectional shape and entrainment. The density difference is sufficiently small, so that the Boussinesq approximation is considered to be valid. The SIMPLE algorithm is applied in a staggered grid system of a calculational domain for the numerical method.

A computational approach to the simulation of controlled flows by synthetic jets actuators

  • The paper focuses on the integration of a non-linear one-dimensional model of Synthetic Jet (SJ) actuator in a well-assessed numerical simulation method for turbulent compressible flows. The computational approach is intended to the implementation of a numerical tool suited for flow control simulations with affordable CPU resources. A strong compromise is sought between the use of boundary conditions or zero-dimensional models and the full simulation of the actuator cavity, in view of long-term simulation with multiple synthetic jet actuators. The model is integrated in a multi-domain numerical procedure where the controlled flow field is simulated by a standard CFD method for compressible RANS equations, while flow inside the actuator is reduced to a one-dimensional duct flow with a moving piston. The non-linear matching between the two systems, which ensures conservation of the mass, momentum and energy is explained. The numerical method is successfully tested against three typical test cases: the jet in quiescent air, the SJ in cross flow and the flow control on the NACA0015 airfoil.

안정성 이론을 이용한 고압 분사 액체 제트의 미립화 모델에 관한 연구 (A Study on an Atomization Model of a High-Pressurized Liquid Jet with a Stability Theory)

  • The wave characteristics for a non-reacting high-speed liquid jet were investigated using a linear stability theory. In this study, 2-D incompressible viscid momentum equation for a liquid jet was considered, and the effects of injection parameters, such as Weber number, Reynolds number, and density ratio, on the wave characteristics were investigated. With the wavelength obtained from the stability analysis, the atomization model was suggested. The droplet sizes after breakup were determined by the wavelengths of fast growing waves, and the mass of the shed droplets was determined by the breakup time derived by ORouke et al. It was found that in comparison with measurements of diesel fuel spray, the results of calculation had a similar trend of the decrease of overall SMD with the increase of Reynolds number.

A Study on the Flow Characteristics around a Coanda Control Surface

  • Jet flows applied tangential to a foil surface near the leading and/or trailing edges increase the lift of the foil by delaying the separation also known as the Coanda effects. Many experimental and numerical studies have proven the effectiveness of Coanda effects on circulation control and the effects have been found to be useful in practical application in many aerodynamics fields. Most of the previous works have studied the effects of the jet blowing near the trailing edges and investigated the influence of jet momentum on lift. A few experimental studies, however, focused on the separation bubble that develops near the leading edge and applied jet flow the edge to remove the bubble but only to find decrease in lift. In the present paper, a Coanda foil of 20% thickness ellipse with modified rounded leading and trailing edges was investigated, and the flow around the foil was numerically studied. The blowing around the leading edge only decreased the lift, as the experiments showed, but the suction considerably increased the lift.

  • 가로흐름으로 방류(放流)되는 연직상향평면부력(鉛直上向平面浮力)?의 거동(擧動)이 실험과 기본방정식(基本方程式)의 적분기법(積分技法)에 의하여 해석된다. 적분기법(積分技法)을 상사법칙(相似法則)과 특성(特性)길이를 도입한 연직상향 및 수평방향흐름영역에 대한 점근해(漸近解)이며, 실험은 상이한 속도비와 방류밀도 Froude 수를 변화시키면서 수행되었다. 실험결과(實驗結果)와 해석적해(解析的解)는 잘 일치하여, ?중심선(中心線)의 경로(經路)와 온도(溫度)는 멱법칙(冪法則)으로 표현될 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

횡단 유동장의 기액비 및 레이놀즈수 변화에 따른 외부혼합형 이상유체 제트의 액적크기 및 체적유속 특성 (Characteristics of SMD and Volume Flux of Two-phase Jet Injected into Cross-flow with Various Gas-liquid Ratio and Reynolds Number)

  • A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of two-phase jet injected into subsonic cross-flow using the external mixed gas blast two-phase nozzle. The shadowgraph method was adopted for the cross-flow jet visualization and PDPA system was used to measure droplet size, velocity, and volume flux. The atomization of two-phase jet is initially determined according to gas to liquid mass flow-rate ratio and the Reynolds number of cross-flows. The highest penetration trajectories of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow are governed by the momentum ratio at subsonic cross-flow. As GLR of two-phase jet injected into cross-flow increases, the droplet size decreases and the distribution area of volume flux increases. The distribution of volume flux that influenced by the counter vortex pair at the downstream of cross-flow is symmetric in shape of horseshoe.
