A numerical simulation is performed for the cooling heat transfer of a heated cylindrical pedestal by an axisymmetric jet impingement. Based on the k- $\varepsilon$- f$\sub$${\mu}$/ model of Park et at., the linear and nonlinear stress-strain relations are extended. The Reynolds number based on the jet diameter(D) is fixed at Re$\sub$D/ = 23000. The local heat transfer coefficients are compared with available experimental data. The predictions by k- $\varepsilon$-f$\sub$${\mu}$/ model are in good agreement with the experiments, whereas the standard 7- f model does not properly resolve the flow structures.
Jet impingement on a moving plate, which is applicable to cooling of hot metals in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in the liquid and gas phases. The liquid-gas interface or free surface is tracked by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The computations are made for multiple jets as well as a single jet to compare their flow characteristics. Also, the effects of the nozzle pitch, moving velocity of plate and jet velocity on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields.

An experimental study of impinging jet-flow structure has been carried out for a fully developed single circular jet impingement cooling on a flat plate, and the effect of the wall thickness at nozzle exit edge is investigated. Impinging jet flow structures have been measured by Laser-Doppler Velocimeter to interpret the heat transfer results presented previously by Yoon et al.(sup)(10) The peaks of heat transfer rate are observed near the nozzle edge owing to the radial acceleration of jet flow when the nozzle locates close to the impingement plate. The growth of the velocity fluctuations in the wall jet flow is induced by the vortices which originate in the jet shear layer, and consequently the radial distribution of local Nusselt numbers has a secondary peak at the certain radial position. As a wall of circular pipe nozzle becomes thicker for small nozzle-to-target distance, the entrainment can be inhibited, consequently, the acceleration of wall jet flow is reduced and the heat transfer rate decreases.

The water jet impingement cooling with boiling is one of the techniques to remove heat from high heat flux equipments. The configuration of surface roughness is one obvious condition of affecting the performance on heat transfer in nucleate boiling, The present study investigates the water jet impinging single-phase convection and nucleate boiling heat transfer for the effect of surface roughness to enhance the heat transfer in free surface and submerged jet. The distributions of the averaged wall temperature as well as the boiling curves are discussed. Jet velocities are varied from 0.65 to 1.7 m/s. Surface roughness by sand blast and sand paper varies from 0.3 to 2.51 ${\mu}m$ and cavity shapes on surface are semi-circle and v-shape, respectively The results showed that higher velocity of the jet caused the boiling incipience to be delayed more. The incipient boiling and heat transfer increase with increasing surface roughness due to a large number of cavities of uniform size.

Numerical and visualization procedures are used in a finite difference grid to analyze and better understand the heat transfer in the MEMS based air micro-jet array (MIA) impingement cooling device. The Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with incompressible flow are solved using an implicit procedure. The temperature contour and velocity vector visualization diagrams are used for illustration. The computed temperature distribution at the bottom of the MIA is in good agreement with the experimental measurement data. The parameters are investigated to improve the efficiency of heat transfer in the MIA. The optimum configuration of the MIA is suggested. The present modeling explains the flow phenomenon and yields valuable information to understand the flow and heat transfer in MIA.

The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics in the upward free water jet impinged on a downward flat plate of uniform heat flux. The inner shape of rectangular nozzle used was sine curve type and its contraction ratio of inlet to outlet area was five. Experimental parameters considered were Reynolds number, nozzle exit-flat plate distance, and level of supplementary water. Local Nusselt number was influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number, supplementary water level, and distance between the nozzle exit and flat plate. Within the impingement region, the Nusselt number has a maximum value on the nozzle center axis and decreases monotonically outward from center. Outside of the impingement region, on the other hand, the Nusselt number has a secondary peak near the position where the distance from nozzle center reaches four times the nozzle width. However if nozzle exit velocity exceeds 6.2 m/s, the secondary peak appears also in the impingement region. The empirical equation for the stagnation heat transfer is a function of Prandtl, Reynolds, and axial distance from the nozzle exit. The optimum level of supplementary water to augment the heat transfer rate at stagnation point was found to be twice the nozzle width.

An experimental investigation is reported on the heat transfer coefficient from a rotating flat plate in a round turbulent normally impinging water jet. Tests were conducted over a range of jet flow rates, rotational speeds, jet radial posetions with various combinations of three jet nozzle diameter. Dimensionless correlation of average Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flow is given in terms of jet and rotational Reynolds numbers, dimensionless jet radial position. We suggested various effective promotion methods according to heat transfer characteristics and aspects. The data presented herein will serve as a first step toward providing the information necessary to optimize in rational manner the cooling requirement of impingement cooled rotating machine components.
The heat transfer and flow measurements on a pedestal encountered in chip cooling. A uniform wall temperature boundary condition at the plate surface and on a pedestal was created using shroud method. Liquid crystal was used to measure the plate surface temperature. The jet Reynolds number (Re) ranges from 11,000 to 50,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 10, and the dimensionless pedestal diameter-to-height (H/D) from 0 to 1.0. The results show that the Nusselt number distributions at the near the pedestal exhibit secondary maxima at $r/d{\cong}1.0\;and\;1.5$. The formation of the secondary maxima is attributed to an create in the vortex by the pedestal.

The water jet impingement cooling is one of the techniques to remove the heat from high heat flux equipments. Local heat transfer of the confined water impinging jet and the effect of nozzle collar to enhance the heat transfer are investigated in the fee surface jet and submerged jet. Boiling is initiated from the farthest downstream and increase of the wall temperature is reduced with developing boiling, forming the flat temperature distributions. The reduction in the nozzle-to-surface distance fur H/W$\le$1 causes significant increases and distribution changes of heat transfer. Developed boiling reduces the differences of heat transfer for various conditions. The nozzle collar is employed at the nozzle exit. The distances from heated surface to nozzle collar, Hc are 0.25W, 0.5W and 1.0W. The liquid film thickness is reduced and the velocity of wall jet increases as decreased spacing of collar to heated surface. Heat transfer is enhanced fur region from the stagnation to x/W$\~$8 in the free surface jet and to x/W$\~$5 in the submerged jet. For nucleate boiling region of further downstream, the heat transfer by the nozzle collar is decreased in submerged jet comparing with higher velocity condition. It is because the increased velocity by collar is de-accelerated downstream.
