The object of this study is to investigate the contamination degree and the interpretation of sea water intrusion phenomena with hydrogeochemical and hydrogen-oxygen stable isotope of coastal aquifer in the Gogum area, Korea. The physical characteristics of groundwaters is the neutral pH condition and transitional Redox environments, and groundwater is affected by sea water & surface water. The chemical properties of groundwaters are showing an increase in contamination owing to the sea water intrusion, waste water from the surface and agricultural chemicals. In the case of chloride, 6 samples of the groundwater in the study area are in excess of the drinking water standard. The Piper diagram shows the contamination in GG-4 and 14 by sea water intrusion. GG-3, 7 and 13 dominate the Na-HCO$_{3}$ type water and regional (GG-14) is indicated to dominate the Na-Cl type water such as sea water. According to the Sl (saturation index), sea water is oversaturated with respect to calcite and dolomite, GG-3, 14 and 18 are approaching the saturation state. The hydrogen-oxygen stable isotope ratio of groundwaters originates in the meteoric water, and groundwaters of GG-1, 5 and 14 display high oxygen isotope value due to surface water trespass and sea water intrusion. The result of this study, GG-14 is contaminated by sea water intrusion, groundwaters expected GG-3, 7 and 13 is in progress to artificial pollution and sea water intrusion.

This study was carried out to estimate aboveground carbon contents associated with four years of thinning treatment of Quercus acuta stands in Wando Arboretum, Jeonnam. Stand thinning was conducted over four years using stand table projection for each thinning treatment. Ten sample trees were cut in the surveyed area. Estimation of aboveground biomass was made using the equation model $W=aD+bD^2$ where W is oven dry weight and D is DBH in cm. The total aboveground biomass for each intensity treatment area was : control (148.4 ton/ha), light (105.6 ton/ha), moderate (68.7 ton/ha) and heavy (39.1 ton/ha). Aboveground carbon storage for Quercus acuta stands was found by multiplying dry weigh t (ton/ha) by 0.5. Carbon storage and increment after four years was: control (74.2 tonC/ha), light (52.8 tonC/ha), moderate (34.3 tonC/ha) and heavy thinning intensity area (38.2tonC/ha).

In this study, the soil characteristics of peat layer in Korea were analysed to predict new peat distribution areas in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do. The soil characteristics of peat distribution areas in Taean were compared with those in other areas in Korea. In Korea, peat researches were conducted in various regions, such as Taean in Chungcheongnam-do, Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province, Gangneung in Gangwon-do, Ulsan, Iksan in Jeollabuk-do and Jangheung in Jeollanam-do. We summarized a) topographic distribution, b) deposition type, c) soil drainage classes, and d) soil suborder of previously studied area to determine criteria for prediction of peat distribution area. Through a case study, the type of peat layer distribution area in Taean were divided into two; (1) a) valley, b) co-alluvium, c) somewhat poorly drained, d) aqualfs and (2) a) marine plain, b) alluvium, c) very poorly drained, d) aquepts. A field survey was conducted to confirm the distribution of the actual peat layer. All peat layer were located within 10-km from the coastal line which is similar to previous studies, and the peat layer was characterized with pH 5, humic acid content of less than 15% and dark brown color. The new peat layer in Taean was deeper, thicker and less humificated than other studied areas.
The tidal flat area of south and west coast consists of 2.4% of total land area of Korea. About 83% of tidal flat is located at the west coast, and the remaining tidal flat is located at the south coast. This tidal flat is also divided for administrative regions which are Gyeonggi Province(35.1%), Chungnam Province(12.7%) Jeonbuk Province(4.7%), Jeonnam Province(44.0%) and Gyeongnam Province(3.5%). The tidal flat of west coast of Korea is one of the most important stopover site for shorebirds on the East Asia-Australia Flyway. The tidal flat is used for feeding and resting place by migratory shorebirds. Generally, waterbirds including migratory shorebirds are considered as key species to show the superiority of wetland. By the criteria of Lamsar Convention in the basis of waterbird, at least 14 coastal wetlands in Korea have to be internationally important wetlands. The factors to affect the distribution of shorebirds at the certain tidal flat are closely related with 1) the distribution of benthic invertebrates, potential prey of shorebirds 2) the availability of roosting site 3) the size of tidal flat 4) the intensity of human disturbance. In this paper, we summarized the regional status of tidal flat of Korea and its conservation methods related with migratory waterbirds.

In a situation where population decline is intensifying, the decline of local mid-small sized cities is emerging as a social problem. The decline will increase the difficulty of supplying demand-based living services. Therefore, increasing accessibility to living services is important for quality of life. With this background, the purpose of this study is to derive living zones that can use high-order services in metropolitan cities through high-speed railway. To this end, the behaviors of residents in mid-small sized cities were investigated through a questionnaire, and living zones and vulnerable areas were derived through a GIS analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, most of the residents had experience using cultural, medical, shopping, and educational services in metropolitan cities. Second, the time required to visit a metropolitan city for the use of higher-order services was about 2 hours, and the desired time was about 50 minutes. Third, when accessibility is improved, the willingness to use the higher-order service of the metropolitan city is high. Fourth, many regions have been derived as living zones where services of metropolitan cities can be used through high-speed rail. Lastly, the major vulnerable areas were found to be the northern area of the Gangwon region, the northern area of the Yeongnam region, the west coast of Chungnam, and the border area of Jeonnam and Gyeongnam.
This study to understand the production cost of cultivation in chestnut tree (Castanea spp.) as a result of a survey conducted of 227 farmers is as follows. In full-time farmer, average cultivation area was 5.5 hectares and average chestnut production was 1.6 tons per hectare. In chestnut sale type, more than 73% of total production was sold by Nong-hyup (7an agricultural cooperative association) and intermediaries, and also proportion of nut size grade was 18% in special-large nut, following 49% in large nut, 25% in middle nut and 8% in small nut. There was considerable difference among cultivated regions in gross income, whereas total average gross income was 2,103 thousand KRW per hectare and 66.4% of it was used in management expenses. Finally the chestnut cultivated farmers have a yearly income of 706 thousands KRW (net income rate 33.6%). As peculiarity of regional production cost, a low tree farm in height and a labor intensive growing helped the improved quality of the chestnut so, on average, 2,161 thousand KRW per hectare of the income of the Chungnam was raised. However caused by an old-age of chestnut trees, there was a little input to management expenses and it resulted in low productivity in the Jeonnam and the Gyeongnam.

The purpose of this study was evaluate to the stability on cut slope of forest roads by forest environmental factors. The total of 19 environmental factors on cut slope of forest roads were investigated in about 42.74km constructed during 1987 to 1993 in Gyeongnam and Jeonnam province. The evaluation of slope stability in forest roads were conducted by the discriment analysis. The main factors influencing the stability of cut slope were significant in order of coverage, soil hardness, degree of slope, altitude, silt loam, convex(凸) and compound(凹凸). The centroids value of discriminant function in the stability and unstability area estimated to -1.194 and 1.127, respectively. The boundary value between two groups related to slope stability was -0.072. The prediction rate of discriminant function for stability evaluation of was as high as 90.4%.

Starting in 2012, severe diebacks usually accompanied by abundant gum exudation have occurred on yuzu trees in Goheung-gun, Jeonnam Province, where severely affected trees were occasionally killed. On-farm surveys were conducted at 30 randomly-selected orchards located at Pungyang-myeon, Goheung-gun, and the resulting disease incidences were 18.5% and 39.6% for dieback and gumming symptoms, respectively. Black spots on branches and leaves also appeared on infected trees showing a typical dieback symptom. Morphological and molecular identifications of the isolated fungal organisms from lesions on the symptomatic leaves and branches revealed that they are identical to Phomopsis citri, known to cause gummosis. In order to find the reason for this sudden epidemic, we investigated the weather conditions that are exclusively distinct from previous years, hypothesizing that certain weather extremes might have caused the severe induction of pre-existing disease for yuzu. There were two extreme temperature drops beyond the yuzu's cold hardiness limit right after an abnormally-warm-temperature-rise during the winter of 2011-12, which could cause severe frost damage resulting in mechanical injuries and physiological weakness to the affected trees. Furthermore, there was an increased frequency of strong wind events, seven times in 2012 compared to only a few times in the previous years, that could also lead to extensive injuries on branches. In conclusion, we estimated that the possible damages by severe frost and frequent strong wind events during 2012 could cause the yuzu trees to be vulnerable to subsequent fungal infection by providing physical entries and increasing plant susceptibility to infections.

Observation of land surface temperature in industrial areas is problematic, as it is not possible to construct a network of weather stations with sufficiently high density and continuous operation in such zones. Multiphase remote sensing data that cover a wide area and take a short time to process can enable the user to precisely and continuously measure the current and changing land surface temperatures in a certain region. Jeollanam-Do in South Korea is undergoing rapid industrialization, with the establishment of a number of industrial complexes, such as the Gwangyang Steelworks, Yeosu Industrial Complex, Yulchon Industrial complex, and Daebul Industrial Complex. To look into the properties of industrial complex's temperature, this study uses the thermal band of Landsat 7 ETM+ images acquired under thermal infrared wavelengths in order to calculate and compare the surface temperatures of the four above-named industrial complexes. From this, it is possible to obtain the basic information about industrial complex for environmental and natural resource management, which will aid industrial complex planners in developing methods of addressing environmental problems.
This study aimed to help the college students majoring in beauty to have interests and manage the functional areas of scalp and hair by accurately identifying the condition of scalp and hair and realizing the convergence management habit and subjective symptoms for the condition. The study conducted a survey on 160 beauty major college universities in their 20s living in the Jeonnam area by asking the subjects to directly write the answers. The study found that many subjects had combination type of scalps and hair problems of split ends and thin hair, and recognized that their hair was damaged. They answered that frequent dyeing and perm caused the damage and they were using the shampoo for damaged hair to prevent hair damage. Regarding the observable symptoms on scalp and hair, it was identified that self-perception was higher as the interest in scalp was high, which influenced age and sleeping time.
