Mental Health Factors associated with North Korean Defectors' Quality of Life

  • The purpose of this study was to assess mental health and quality of life (QOL) including factors influencing QOL among early North Korean defectors in South Korea. Participants were 151 early North Korean defectors residing in a settlement support center. All measures were self-administered. Unlike refugees living in communities, early defectors did not experience a high rate of mental health problems and reported a good QOL. Psychoticism was the most predictive factor affecting QOL. Findings from this study suggest the importance of mental health assessment and support over time. Psychoticism, significant in explaining QOL of early North Korean defectors, needs early diagnosis and treatment to prevent progression. Mental health issues among refugees may not be evident while they are in a structured, supportive environment. Evaluation and treatment are needed over time.

International regulatory considerations pertaining to the development of stem cell-based veterinary medicinal products

  • Stem cell-based products (SCPs) are an emerging field of veterinary medicine that focuses on the regeneration, repair, or replacement of damaged tissues or organs. However, there are some issues in applying the traditional regulatory guideline for the approval of SCPs as veterinary medicinal products. This article describes the positions of Korea, US, and EU regarding SCPs, and compares the regulatory guidelines of each country for their safety evaluation. Although there are some differences in the regulatory guidelines, similar considerations in identifying the quality of SCPs and their safety has adopted. Overall, these guidelines need to be harmonized among countries.

  • 소형제트엔진은 주로 연구, 실험, 교육 등의 목적으로 사용되고 있다. 이러한 소형제트엔진은 고도가 높고 고속으로 비행하는 드론에 추력 발생 장치로서의 중요한 역할을 수행할 수 있다. 그러나 엔진의 실질적인 활용을 위해서는 기존의 유선으로 구성된 컨트롤러를 무선으로 제어할 수 있는 방식으로 재구성하는 것이 필요하다. 이 중에서도 연료펌프의 무선제어시스템이 우선적으로 개발되어야만 다른 부분에 대한 무선제어개발이 가능해질 것이다. 본 논문에서는 소형 제트 엔진의 연료 펌프를 무선으로 제어할 수 있는 방식을 적용한 임베디드 시스템의 구성과 방식에 대해 제안하고 있다.

Inhibitory effects of some medicinal plant extracts on the tyrosinase promoter activity on B16 mouse melanoma cells

  • Melanin is specifically produced in melanocytes. The pathway for melanin biosynthesis is mainly controlled by tyrosinase. To estimate the inhibitory effect of melanin biosynthesis from 31 medicinal plants extracts, we tested the inhibitory effects of the tyrosinase promoter on B16 mouse melanoma cells. The result of this study demonstrated that Mori Radicis Cortex and Castena Fractus extracts only in tested medicinal plant extracts have high inhibitory effects on tyrosinase promoters with very low cytotoxicity on B16 mouse melanoma cells. Therefore, extracts of Mori Radicis Cortex and Castena Fractus were evaluated as very effective negative regulators of tyrosinase gene expression.

  • 음성 사용자 인터페이스(Voice User Interface, 이하 VUI) 는 음성을 매개로 일어나는 인간과 기계 간 인터페이스를 뜻한다. 음성 인식율의 향상과 음성 재생 장치의 발달에 힘입어 최근 들어 휴대폰과 카 네비게이션 시스템에 주로 적용되고 있다. 최근 이러한 경향은 A/V 시스템 등 가전제품(Domestic Appliance) 에도 확대되고 있는데 본 연구에서는 사용자와 필수적이고 빈번한 상호작용이 일어나는 백색 가전을 대상으로 사용자를 만족시키는 음성 인터페이스의 주요 속성 중 음성 생성(Speech Generation)과 관련된 음성 표현을 중점 연구하였다. 연구방법으로 먼저 주부들이 느끼는 가전에서의 문제점과 VUI 로서 해결가능성에 대하여 F.G.I. 를 통하여 조사하여 주요 이슈를 도출하고, 대표적 백색 가전인 에어컨, 세탁기, 김치냉장고, 냉장고, 식기세척기, 오븐레인지 등 6개 제품에 대하여 음성의 물리적 특성, 내용적 특성, 기능에 따른 배치에 대하여 조건에 따라 다양한 프로토타입을 제작한 후 실제 환경과 유사한 실험실 상황에서 사용자의 선호도, 적합도 및 수행을 측정하였다. 연구 결과 각 이슈에 따라 가전제품에 적합한 VUI 가이드라인 특성을 찾아내었다.

A Study on the Current Measurement Using Spun Fiber (Spun 광섬유를 이용한 전류 측정에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the polarization properties of spun fiber due to intrinsic birefringence and magneto-optic effects are theoretically analyzed and experimented. The degree of polarization which indicates the intrinsic birefrigence is measured over 0.818, and the variation of output polarization angle with input polarization angle is measured within 9$^{\circ}$. Compared with single mode fiber, spun fiber is found to have very excellent polarization-maintaining property. Implemented current measurement system using spun fiber can linearly measure the magnetic field up to 20,000 A/m generated by solenoid.
