In this study, a Jeju sand, which contains both siliceous and calcareous materials, was sampled from a beach in Jeju Island. It is observed that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. From cone penetration test using calibration chamber system, it is found that the cone tip resistance($q_c$)-relative density(Dr)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma_v}'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches to that of high compressible quartz sand. However, this correlation overestimates the relative density of a coastal sediments in Jeju Island maybe due to the cementation effect of this area. From analysis of the results of cone penetration and SPS tests at a coastal area in Jeju Island, it seems reasonable to assume that the coast of Jeju Island is a natural cemented sediments.

This study conducted a series of drained triaxial test in order to determine the critical state parameters of a high compressible Jeju sand. Jeju sand is classified into mixed sand containing both siliceous and calcareous materials and has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. It is observed that the behavior of Jeju sand is similar to that of general calcareous sand. The friction angle of Jeju sand at critical state gradually decreases with increasing the mean effective stress. Test result shows that the particle crushing resulted from stress during shear causes the reduction of void ratio at critical state.

A series of triaxial test was performed in order to determine critical state parameters of calcareous Jeju sand, which comprises angular shape particles with many pores in the surface. It is observed that Jeju sand mainly shows the contractive behavior during triaxial shear due to high extreme void ratios and large compressibility. The peak friction angle of Jeju sand decreases slightly with increasing mean effective stress due to the particle crushing of carbonate materials. However, the peak friction angle of Jeju sand is higher than that of other silica sands because of the more angular particle shape. The critical state friction angle of Jeju sand gradually decreases when the mean effective stress at a critical state increases. Whereas, there is not a clear influence of void ratio on the critical state friction angle. Critical state parameters of Jeju sand are similar to those of calcareous sands, but significantly larger than those of common sands.
The disease causing colic is the greatest cause of death in the domestic horse population today and accidental deaths as a result of colic leads to decreased productivity and economic losses in the horse breeding industry. Large colon impaction is the most common cause of colic in horses. Horses may ingest sand either by eating from the ground in sandy locations, or because of its inclusion in hay. In certain areas sand impaction is relatively common. The horse (4 year, female) presented with abdominal pain, which was charactered by willing to lie down, pawing, and looking at flank. A month later, the horse died suddenly at sand paddock. Post-mortem examination revealed the sand impaction as a lot of feces, sand and gravels in the right dorsal colon. In addition, there was necrosis and debilitation in mucosal lining of the large colon and rupture site on the right dorsal colon. The purpose of this article is to review sand impaction and emergencies in Thoroughbred horses.
Sands distributed in Jeju island's coastal areas, Korea, can be classified as silicate sand derived from volcanic rock, carbonate sand derived from shells, and mixed sands containing both silicate and carbonate sands. These three types of sands typically exist in Jeju coastal areas. Samples of silicate, carbonate and mixed sands were obtained from Samyang beach, Gimnyeong beach, and Jeju harbor area, respectively. Compression tests were conducted to assess the compression characteristics of these sands. As a result of these tests, each sand showed different behaviors. For Samyang beach sand, it appeared that initial compression is a larger than the other two sands. For Cimnyeong and Jeju harbor sands, however, the additional compression occurred after initial compression. This could result from the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of sand particles. In addition, settlement behavior of Jeju harbor ground according to the construction stages was analyzed using the measured data. It showed that in addition to the initial elastic compression, a considerable additional compression occurred with time. The settlements of Jeju harbor ground were predicted by using the elastic settlement calculation methods (empirical methods) and the compression test method. The empirical methods, which did not consider the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of particles could show smaller result than that occurring actually.
A study on the presence of benthic dinoflagellates in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island, Korea was conducted during 2011 and 2012. Identification and taxonomic observations were made of the benthic dinoflagellate samples using light and epifluorescence microscopy. Thirty-seven dinoflagellate taxa belong to five orders, nine families, 18 genera and 30 species, which are new records for Korean waters, were detected in this study. The detailed nomenclature, references, distribution, and illustrations are presented here. The commonly occurring genera were Amphidinium, Coolia, Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum, and Thecadinium. Among the recorded species, 26 were found only in sand sediment, seven in macroalgal samples, and four were found in both sand and macroalgal samples. Of the 37 species, nine were potentially toxic. These results suggest that diversified benthic dinoflagellates including several potentially toxic species occur in sand sediment and macroalgae in the intertidal zone along the coasts of Jeju Island. The morphological features of the identified species were more or less similar to observations made by previous studies in Korea and elsewhere. The presence of known toxic species may indicate a potential risk of toxicity in the marine ecosystem of Jeju Island. The present study can be helpful for further detailed taxonomic, toxicological, molecular phylogenetic studies and may help in the management and conservation of Jeju Island's marine ecosystem.
The Jeju sand was sampled from the beach in Jeju Island and its basic properties were analyzed. The cementation effect of Jeju coastal sediments was evaluated from in-situ tests such as SPT, CPT, and the Suspension-PS test. It was shown from test results that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles, similar to typical calcareous sands. From cone penetration test in the calibration chamber, it was found that the cone resistance($q_c$)-relative density($D_R$)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma}_v'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches that of high compressible quartz sand. However, the $q_C-D_R-{\sigma}_v'$ correlation suggested for uncemented Jeju sand overestimates the relative density of coastal sediments of Jeju Island due to the cementation effect. From the analysis of the relation of cone resistance, N value, and small strain shear modulus measured in-situ, it seems reasonable to assume that the coastal sediment of Jeju Island is a naturally cemented one.

Most important characteristics of calcareous sand are the particle angularity and hollow structure. These characteristics lead to the different behavior of calcareous sand compared to siliceous sand. This study performs a series of dilatometer test using calibration chamber, in order to analyze the effect of particle characteristic of calcareous sand on DMT indices. From experimental test, it is observed that the horizontal stress index($K_D$) and dilatometer modulus($E_D$) of calcareous Jeju sand is underestimated compared to siliceous sand. This is because the particle crushing during penetration induces the less contraction of the dilatometer membrane. A slightly smaller influence of particle crushing is reflected in $E_D$ rather than $K_D$, because $P_1$ pressure reflects the deformation characteristics of un-crushed particle relatively well. It is also observed that $K_D$ of Jeju sand is differently influenced by the vertical effective stress compared with that of siliceous sand.
This study categorizes the distributed sand around coastal area of Jeju volcanic Island into three groups according to their components, and arranges their characteristics. In the case of basic physical properties, the silicate sand has slightly greater specific gravity than general sand, and the carbonate sand with widespread distribution has a lower specific gravity. In the gross, the carbonate sand has poor particle classifying and low uniformity coefficient because carbonate minerals of relatively large grain size are mixed. The relation between compressive strength and components shows conflicting tendency that silicate and carbonate components have positive correlation and negative correlation with compressive strength, respectively. Based on the components ratio of one to one, the sand having low carbonate component ratio is expected to be able to utilize in construction fine aggregate. To compare between square root (ACI 308) and cube root (KCI 2012) of compressive strength at computation of elastic modulus, it is considered to non-dimensional elastic modulus.
In this study, the coefficient of permeability for cement mixtures including the powdered sludge of basalt, sand or fly ash with different mixed ratios was measured in order to reuse the powdered sludge of basalt in Jeju Island as the cut off materials. As the permeability test results, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with fly ash was increased with increasing the fly ash contents. The amount of fly ash in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 8 %. Meanwhile, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with sand was increased with increasing the sand contents. The amount of sand in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 40 %. According to the comparison result of cement mixtures including fly ash or sand, it is more advantageous to put the sand into the cement mixtures, rather than mixing the fly ash.
