The solvent extracts of Sargassum muticum, which were extracted by using several solvents with different polarities, were prepared for use as natural preservatives. The S. muticum extract with 80% ethanol was sequentially fractionated with n.hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, and butanol. In order to effectively screen for natural preservatives agents, we first investigated the antioxidant activities such as DPPH radical scavenging capacity, superoxide radical scavenging capacity, and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of the S. muticum extracts. Through the screening system, we found that dichloromethane and ethylacetate fraction had high antioxidant activity with increments of the extract concentration. The antimicrobial activities and cell growth inhibition were investigated for each strain with the different concentrations of S. muticum extracts. Antimicrobial activities were shown in ethanol, dichloromethane, and n.hexane fractions of S. muticum. However, butanol, ethylacetate and water fractions showed weak antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms. Among the five fractions, dichloromethane fraction showed the highest antimicrobial activities against microorganisms tested, such as Bacillus sublitis, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Enteritidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The polyphenolic compounds from ethanol, n.hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, butanol, and water fractions were 63.96 mg/g, 8.49 mg/g, 28.11 mg/g, 172.64 mg/g, 114.56 mg/g, and 34.91 mg/g, respectively. The dichloromethane fraction could be suitable for development as a food preservative.

In this study, we investigated the antioxidant, whitening and anti-inflammatory effects of 12 species of wild mushrooms in Jeju Island. Their anti-oxidative effects were measured by the free radical scavenging activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and tyrosinase inhibitory activities were determined for the whitening effect. In addition, inhibitory activities of NO production for anti-inflammation were investigated. As a result, Elfvingia applanata extract and Fomitopsidaceae sp. extracts showed higher free radical scavenging activities ($FSC_{50}$; $74.8{\mu}g/mL$, $182.6{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) than other extracts. Elfvingia applanata extract ($IC_{50}$; $346.8{\mu}g/mL$) showed higher activity than the Arbutin ($IC_{50}$; $421.6{\mu}g/mL$) on tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Elfvingia applanata extract and Daedaleopsis styracina extract showed anti-inflammatory activity of 74.1% and 62.9% respectively, at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. Furthermore, the extracts inhibited NO production in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, we evaluated the biological activities of 12 species of wild mushrooms in Jeju Island, Elfvingia applanata, Fomitopsidaceae sp. and Daedaleopsis styracina could have the functional effects as a cosmetic raw material.
The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ethanol extract of Malus micromalus were studied in vitro. Ethanol extract of M. micromalus showed scavenging effects on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitric oxide (NO) radicals. In addition, ethanol extract of M. micromalus inhibited the generation of superoxide anion ($O_2^-$) radical and uric acid by xanthine oxidase. We also investigated the effect of ethanol extract of M. micromalus on NO production in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Ethanol extract of M. micromalus significantly inhibited NO production and this inhibitory action was not due to the cytotoxicity. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) was markedly down-regulated by ethanol extract of M. micromalus. These results indicate that the inhibitory action of ethanol extract of M. micromalus on NO production in LPS-stimulated macropages might be due in part to abrogation of iNOS and COX-2 protein induction. Taken together, this study suggests that ethanol extract of M. micromalus could contribute to the chemoprevention and therapy of oxidative stress and inflammation.
In this study were evaluated the whitening and anti-oxidative activities from the extracts of Sorbus alnifolia branches, and identified the chemical structures of the active ingredients. In the whitening tests using α-MSH stimulated B16F10 melanoma cells, the 70% ethanol extract and n-butanol (n-BuOH) fractions concentration-dependently inhibited cellular melanogenesis and intracellular tyrosinase activities without causing cell toxicity. The total polyphenol content of n-BuOH and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fractions were measured to be respectively 241.1 ± 1.1 and 222.9 ± 2.4 (mg/g GAE), and the total flavonoid content of EtOAc fraction was 75.3 ± 2.0 (mg/g QE). Upon anti-oxidant studies with DPPH and ABTS+ radicals, potent radical scavenging activities were observed in the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions. Moreover, in the study of cell protection efficacy using HaCaT keratinocytes damaged by H2O2, the EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions showed a very positive results on prevention of oxidative stress. Phytochemical studies for this extract resulted in the isolation of four compounds; 2-oxopomolic acid (1), euscaphic acid (2), epi-catechin (3), prunasin (4). These results suggested that the extract of S. alnifolia branches containing compounds 1-4 as natural ingredients could be used as whitening and anti-oxidant ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai leaves contain a mixture of polysaccharides, amino acids, and polyphenols, which mediate various biological activities. For efficient utilization of its leaf, we reported the preparation procedure for phytochemical-rich extract (PRE) using the leaf residue, which was by-product of hot water extraction. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of PRE and its major constituent, p-coumaric acid,on the growth of several human cancer cell lines (MKN-74, MKN-45, SNU-1, SNU-16, and HL-60). The ethyl acetate fraction of PRE and p-coumaric acid significantly inhibited the proliferation of MKN-74 and HL-60 cells, respectively, and induced cell apoptosis, down-regulated Bcl-2 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase levels, and up-regulated those of Bax and caspase-3. These results show the potential utility of S. quelpaertensis Nakai leaves in cancer prevention.

This study examined the proper dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality for wool fabrics dyed with Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf extract. FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrum analysis showed that tannin and flavonoids were contained in the extracted colorant. The dyeing of wool fabrics using Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf was good without pretreatment or mordant treatment. Optimal dyeing conditions for wool fabrics were a colorant concentration of 70%(v/v), dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 100 minutes and dyebath pH of 5.8. Color fastness of dyed wool fabrics to washing, rubbing, perspiration was good, whereas light was grade 3. The UV protection rate and deodorization rate of wool fabrics dyed with Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf improved. Reduction rate of Staphylococcus aureus/Klebsiella pneumoniae were excellent at 99.9%. Therefore, it was confirmed that Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf can be used as environ-mentally friendly natural dye.
Talipariti hamabo is a plant growing around salt marshes in the Lava Coast region of Jeju Island, Korea. In this study, the extract of T. hamabo leaves was investigated for the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-bacterial activities and their active constituents were identified. In the anti-inflammatory tests using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction inhibited the nitric oxide production without causing cell toxicity. Moreover, the EtOAc fraction reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6) as well as prostaglandin E2. In the anti-oxidative studies with DPPH and ABTS+ radicals, potent scavenging activities were observed in the EtOAc and n-butanol fractions. Upon the anti-bacterial tests using Staphylococcus epidermidis, EtOAc and n-butanol fractions exhibited good activities. Through the phytochemical studies on EtOAc fraction, three components were isolated by repeated column chromatography; oleic acid (1), p-hydroxyphenethyl-trans-ferulate (2), nicotiflorine (3). Based on these results, the extract of T. hamabo leaves can be developed as natural resources for cosmetic applications.

In the present study, we investigated the anti-proliferation activity of Citrus grandis Osbeck peel (CGP) in HL60 (human promyelocytic leukemia) cells. It was found that 80% ethanol extract of CGP could inhibit the cell growth in a dose-dependent manner ($250{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$), which was associated with morphological changes and apoptotic cell death such as depolarized mitochondrial membrane, formation of apoptotic bodies and increased populations of apoptotic sub-G1 phase. The results indicate that CGP extract inhibits the growth of HL60 cancer cells by the induction of apoptosis, which may be mediated by its ability to change the Bcl family proteins and increase the activation of caspase-3 and PARP. Therefore, it is suggested that CGP has the potential to provide a remarkable natural defense against the proliferation of HL60 cells.
To use mountain ginseng adventitious roots (MGAR), which is superior in functionality compared to ginseng, and to mass produce raw materials as a functional cosmetic material, the antioxidant and cosmeceutical activities of the extracts of MGAR at different ethanol concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60 and 80%) were compared and analyzed. At first, different ethanol concentrations were compared to determine the best solvent for the extraction of phenolic compounds from MGAR. An 80% ethanol extract with 10.07 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g sample and 0.94 mg of quercetin equivalents/g sample was the best solvent in the extraction of phenolic compounds. However, the 60% ethanol extract had the highest antioxidant activity, evident by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (35.01 mM Trolox/g sample) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (460.94 mM $FeSO_4/g$ sample). However, the inhibitory activities of the 80% ethanol extract from the MGAR against tyrosinase and elastase were higher than those of the other extracts. The results of this study show that the extract of MGAR can be used as an easily accessible source of natural antioxidant and as a possible cosmetic ingredient in the cosmeceutical industry. However, the components responsible for the antioxidant and cosmeceutical activities of the MGAR extracts are currently unclear. Therefore, it is suggested that further studies should be carried out to isolate and identify the antioxidant and cosmeceutical components in MGAR.
In the present study, a suitable drying method was developed for citrus press cakes (CPCs), which are produced as a by-product in citrus juice plants, and the protective effect of methanol extract of CPCs prepared by far-infrared radiation (FIR) drying against $H_2O_2$-induced DNA damage was evaluated versus that of freeze-dried CPCs. Methanol extract of FIR-dried CPCs exhibited comparatively good ROS scavenging activity versus the freeze-dried CPCs at the concentration of 100 ${\mu}g$/mL. The extract strongly enhanced the cell viability against $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative damage in Vero cells. Lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity of the extract from FIR-dried CPCs was comparable to that of the extract from freeze-dried CPCs. This sample also exhibited good protective effects against $H_2O_2$-mediated cell apoptosis as demonstrated by decreased apoptotic body formation in the nuclear staining with Hoechst 33342. In the comet assay, the CPC extracts exhibited strong inhibitory effects against $H_2O_2$-mediated DNA damage in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, this study demonstrated that FIR drying effectively preserves CPC as a functionally important natural antioxidant source and the FIR drying can be adapted for drying CPCs and is more economical for massive production than freeze drying.
