A 5-year-old, 6.2 kg male mixed dog was presented to local animal hospital with a 6-month history of swelling, pain, inflammation, and lameness in the 5th digit of right hind limb. And a 7-year-old, 2.7 kg male Maltese dog was also presented to animal hospital with a 2-month history of nail deformities in the 5th digit of left hind limb. Abnormal growth or degeneration of the distal phalanges was observed at the 5th digit of hind limb in two dogs using radiographic examination. The masses in the digit were excised completely under local anesthesia. On histological examination of the digit masses, large well-circumscribed, unencapsulated round or irregular cystic neoplasms with/without inflammation were occupied in or adjacent area of the distal phalanx. These cysts were lined by stratified squamous epithelium that occasionally had a prominent granular cell layer. Based on the history, clinical signs, radiographic, gross and histopathologic features, these cases were diagnosed as nailbed epithelial inclusion cysts in the digit of dogs.

Phylogenetic relationships of Jeju dogs to other domestic and foreign dog breeds were assessed using mtDNA D-loop sequences. Neighbor-joining trees were constructed using complete sequences (970 bp excluding the tandem repeat region) determined for five Cheju, four Jindo, four Sapsaree, five Pungsan, two of each East and West Laika dogs (Canis familiaris), two gray wolves (Canis lupus) and two coyotes (Canis latrans) and also published complete sequences for dogs. Coyote sequences were used as outgroups. In addition, a total of 214 haplotypes of 598bp D-loop sequences from 30 dog breeds were collected from GenBank and used to investigate genetic structure of population. In the analyses of full D-loop sequence variation and the phylogenetic trees constructed by neighbor-joining method, neither haplotypes nor clades specific for any domestic dog breeds were observed. The inter-species sequence variation (4.51%) between domestic dogs and wolves was much higher than the intra-species sequence variation within domestic dogs (1.63%) and wolves (3.64%). The divergence of the dog and wolf occurred approximately 1~2 million years ago based on these values. The taxa of Jeju dog breed in the phylogenetic tree are clustered separately and intermingled with other taxa of breeds, suggesting that active crossbreeding of Jeju dogs with other domestic breeds.

An 10-day-old, male Jindo puppy was presented with anuria. This puppy was diagnosed as agenesis of prepuce and preputial orifice. To treat anuria exploratory operation was performed and the penis was found in situ under the skin. The penis was protruded outside of the skin. Because of strangulation and dryness of the penis by growing up, the artificial prepuce was made by making the subcutaneous tunnel. After that this puppy showed normal urination and had no complication. In case of the agenesis of the prepuce with the penis in situ, artificial prepuce by subcutaneous tunnel would be an alternative choice for saving the puppy.

Recently, as the number of families raising dogs has increased, cases of lost dogs have frequently occurred. According to US statistics, 5% of the total dogs are reported to be alive, with only 18% reporting to their owners. Therefore, a device for preventing the loss of dogs is needed, and the demand for the market is rapidly growing. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a lost device for dogs. In this paper, we developed a loss prevention device that combines low-power broadband wireless communication technology, LoRa communication method, and GPS positioning technology. The result of this study is expected to prevent the loss of dogs. It is also expected that social problems will reduce the problem of lost dogs.
Two dogs referred to Veterinary Medical Center, Chungbuk National University diagnosed as multiple extrahepatic portosystemic shunt were reported. The first dog was a 20-month-old, 8 kg, male Cocker spaniel with history of peritoneal effusion, diarrhea, anorexia and stunted growth. The second dog was a 3-year-old, 13.4 kg, male Jindo with a history of severe depression. Hematologic examination of first dog revealed mild microcytosis and nonregenerative anemia. All of 2 cases, serum chemical values showed increase of serum ammonia, ALP, r-GTP and glucose. In survey radiography, microhepatia was apparent. In the color Doppler ultrasonographic examination, the first dog revealed a dilated tortuous vein communicating with caudal vena cava was observed near the left kidney and the second dog revealed numerous shunting vessels ventral to L5 and L6. Transcolonic portal scintigraphy of the first dog confirmed the presence of portosystemic shunt. In intraoperative jejunoportography, the first dog showed single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt and multiple acquired extrahepatic portosystemic shunts. The second dog showed multiple acquired extrahepatic portosystemic shunts. In these dogs, the presence of congenital and acquried portosystemic shunts and histopathologic findings were considered to represent a combination of multiple extrahepatic portosystemic shunts and noncirrhotic portal hypertension or portal vein hypoplasia.
A 7-year-old castrated male Yorkshire Terrier was presented with a palpable intra-abdominal mass. In radiography, a large radioopaque renal mass and small abdominal mass were found on dorsal area of the abdomen. Grossly, red to brown color mass and a cystic structure (hydronephrosis) were embedded in the right kidney. Histopathologically, the mass had many irregular shaped neovascular channels lined by polygonal or oval shaped endothelial cells. These vessels and neoplastic cells had great invasive tendency to adjacent connective or fat tissues. Small abdominal mass had identical morphologic features as in renal mass. According to immunohistochemistry, the neoplastic cells in renal mass demonstrated strong positive signals for vimentin and CD31, and weak positive for von Willbrand factor. However, there were no positive reactions for cytokeratin. Based on the gross, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, this mass was diagnosed as primary renal hemangiosarcoma in a Yorkshire Terrier dog.

We propose classification algorithms for human and dog movement. The proposed algorithms use micro-Doppler signals obtained from humans and dogs moving in four different directions. A two-stage classifier based on a support vector machine (SVM) is proposed, which uses a radial-based function (RBF) kernel and $16^{th}$-order linear predictive code (LPC) coefficients as feature vectors. With the proposed algorithms, we obtain the best classification results when a first-level SVM classifies the type of movement, and then, a second-level SVM classifies the moving object. We obtain the correct classification probability 95.54% of the time, on average. Next, to deal with the difficult classification problem of human and dog running, we propose a two-layer convolutional neural network (CNN). The proposed CNN is composed of six ($6{\times}6$) convolution filters at the first and second layers, with ($5{\times}5$) max pooling for the first layer and ($2{\times}2$) max pooling for the second layer. The proposed CNN-based classifier adopts an auto regressive spectrogram as the feature image obtained from the $16^{th}$-order LPC vectors for a specific time duration. The proposed CNN exhibits 100% classification accuracy and outperforms the SVM-based classifier. These results show that the proposed classifiers can be used for human and dog classification systems and also for classification problems using data obtained from an ultra-wideband (UWB) sensor.
We describe 7 cases of splenic smooth muscle tumors in dogs. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis revealed that 6 cases were diagnosed as splenic leiomyosarcoma and 1 case as leiomyoma. All dogs underwent splenectomy without chemotherapy, and one of them was euthanized 2 months after surgery because of hepatic metastasis. Of the remaining 6 dogs, 5 died in the postoperative period and only one dog survived > 4 years. The median survival of the 6 dogs was 16.9 months. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detailed study on splenic smooth muscle tumors in dogs in Korea.
Granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME) is a sporadic, idiopathic, non suppurative inflammatory disease of the canine central nervous system. GME appears to have a worldwide distribution and to occur mostly in young to middle-age dogs of small breeds. A 6-year-old female mixed dog with wry neck, ataxia and rolling was submitted to the Cheju National University for diagnosis. Grossly, in the brain, cerebrospinal fluid was mildly increased and dilatation of the subarachnoid blood vessels was observed. Histopathologically, the lesions were characterized by perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes, various numbers of macrophages and plasma cells in the brainstem and cerebral white matter. Numerous granuloma composed of lymphocytes and histiocytes were scattered throughout the brainstem. Two malacic foci characterized by axonal swelling and gitter cell infiltration with hemorrhage were noted in the medulla oblongata and cerebellum. Special stains failed to demonstrate any infectious agents. Immunohistochemically, the infiltrated cells demonstrated strong positive reactions for CD3, a marker for T lymphocytes origin. Based on the clinical signs, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry, this case was diagnosed as GME in a mixed dog.
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of four types of environmental enrichment on the improvement of companion dogs' behavioral problems due to separation anxiety. A total of 21 dogs of various breeds were included in the study. Data were collected to investigate the behaviors associated with anxiety in dogs, including vocalization, elimination, escape attempts, and destructiveness. A first stage, in which the dog and owner were together (P0), lasted 15 min, and a second stage, in which the dog and owner were separated (P1), lasted 15 min. After the dog and owner were separated (P1), the third stage (P2), during which the environment was enriched, lasted 20 min, and the fourth stage, following environment enrichment (P3), lasted 15 min. The results of the study indicated that compared to P0, the frequency of problematic behavior was highest during the 15 min following separation from the owner (P1). Following environmental enrichment, the average frequency of problematic behaviors in P2 decreased (P < 0.001) compared to P1. Environmental enrichment can also be used appropriately in the case of companion dogs, including shelter dogs or experimental dogs that use a limited kennel, and is a particularly effective means of improving the quality of life of dogs.
