Analysis on Development Strategy Alternatives of Jeju Cruise Tourism Industry (제주 크루즈 관광산업의 발전 전략 대안 분석)

  • The objective of this study was to propose the priorities among the possible development strategies that can activate the industry while the market potential of cruise tourism industry has been increasing. To achieve the research aim, the A'WOT (SWOT-AHP) method was adopted in this study focusing on Jeju cruise industry. As a result of analysis, the strength factor (0.421) was the most important thing among the proposed factors. And, opportunity (0.348), weakness (0.135), and threat (0.096) factors were calculated in turn. Based on the A'WOT analysis, the most urgent thing among the strategy alternatives was 'Installation of dedicated department for Jeju cruise industry'. Accordingly, this result can be utilized as the fundamental data in order to make an optimal decision following by the environmental changes in Jeju cruise industry.

A Study on Emission Rate of BVOCs from Broad-leaved Trees at Jeju Island (제주지역에 분포하는 활엽수의 BVOCs 배출특성)

  • Emission rates of biogenic hydrocarbon emitted from broad-leaved trees grown at Jeju Island were estimated using a dynamic enclosure method. Leaf temperature, PAR and relative humidity were monitored during the sampling time. The emission rates of isoprene and monoterpene were measured for five plants(Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata, Styrax japonicus, Quercus acutissima, Quercus crispula) during the sampling period at the Halla mountain sites. Among five tree species, the highest isoprene emission rate of 10.60 ${\mu}g\;gdw^{-1}hr^{-1}$ was observed for Quercus serrata. The seasonal emission rates were the highest during summer and the emission of isoprene was highly affected by light and temperature variations. The highest emission rate of isoprene was occurred between 13:00 and 14:00, but isoprene was not emitted in nighttime because of the absence of light.

The inference about the cause of death of Korean Fir in Mt. Halla through the analysis of spatial dying pattern - Proposing the possibility of excess soil moisture by climate changes - (한라산 구상나무 공간적 고사패턴 분석을 통한 고사원인 추정 - 기후변화에 따른 토양수분 과다 가능성 제안 -)

  • This study analyzed the density and mortality rate of Korean fir at 9 sites where individuals of Korean firs were marked into the live and dead trees with coordinates on orthorectified aerial images by digital photogrammetric system. As a result of the analysis, Korean fir in each site showed considerable heterogeneity in density and mortality rate depending on the location within site. This make it possible to assume that death of Korean fir can occur by specific factors that vary depending on the location. Based on the analyzed densities and mortality rates of Korea fir, we investigated the correlation between topographic factors such as altitude, terrain slope, drainage network, solar radiation, aspect and the death of Korean fir. The density of Korean fir increases with altitude, and the mortality rate also increases. A negative correlation is found between the terrain slope and the mortality rate, and the mortality rate is higher in the gentle slope where the drainage network is less developed. In addition, it is recognized that depending on the aspect, the mortality rate varies greatly, and the mean solar radiation is higher in live Korean fir-dominant area than in dead Korean fir-dominant area. Overall, the mortality rate of Korean fir in Mt. Halla area is relatively higher in areas with relatively low terrain slope and low solar radiation. Considering the results of previous studies that the terrain slope has a strong negative correlation with soil moisture and the relationship between solar radiation and evaporation, these results lead us to infer that excess soil moisture is the cause of Korean fir mortality. These inferences are supported by a series of climate change phenomena such as precipitation increase, evaporation decrease, and reduced sunshine duration in the Korean peninsula including Jeju Island, increase in mortality rate along with increased precipitation according to the elevation of Mt. Halla and the vegetation change in the mountain. It is expected that the spatial patterns in the density and mortality rate of Korean fir, which are controlled by topography such as altitude, slope, aspect, solar radiation, drainage network, can be used as spatial variables in future numerical modeling studies on the death or decline of Korean fir. In addition, the method of forest distribution survey using the orthorectified aerial images can be widely used as a numerical monitoring technique in long - term vegetation change research.

Distributional Characteristics of the Population and Assessment of the Conservation Status of Michelia Compressa on Korea (국내 초령목 개체군의 분포특성과 보전지위평가)

  • This study was carried out to identify the distribution and growth characteristics and evaluate the conservation status of the Michelia compressa Maxim., a rare and endangered wild plant II, in the habitats in Korea. A total of 314 individuals were found in the natural habitats of Heuksan Island and Jeju Island and were divided into four populations. About 45.9% (144 individuals) were distributed in the range of 401m~500m above sea level. The average height of trees was 2.7(±4.8)m, the diameter at breast height was 12.6(±13.9)cm, and the number of branches was 1.0(±0.5) on average. 54.3% of the sapling individuals of M. compressa were distributed within a radius of 30 m from the mother tree, 25.8% were distributed between 31 m through 40 m, and most (90.1%) were distributed within a radius of 60 m. The fact that sapling individuals of M. compressa are not identified even around some mature individuals and appear only in extremely limited areas is estimated to be closely related to the growth conditions as well as the environment of the natural habitats. The dispersal of M. compressa is presumed to be related to the birds and natural seedlings because water puddles, a resting place for birds beyond the range of natural seedlings, characterize its habitats. The IUCN Red List evaluation criteria at the regional and national level of M. compressa corresponds to the Critically Endangered category, and the domestic population under the category of "CR B2ab(v); C2a(i); D."

  • Jeju Special Self-governing Province continues to try to attract tourists on the basis of an active investment in the tourist industry. But most of the researches and studies on Jeju Tourism were made on a viewpoint of hardware. Therefore, the researches and studies which are related to 'the inclination of tourists who visit Jeju Island', 'the tourist satisfaction by a selection of tourist destination' and 'tourists' activities after the visit to Jeju Island' are insufficient. Accordingly, this study will support a basic datum needed for formulating a policy of Jeju tourism by closely examining the related influences among the Jeju tourists' inclination, their satisfaction and their activities after a tour of Jeju.

Distribution Characteristics of Uranium and Radon Concentration in Groundwaters of Provinces in Korea (지역별 지하수중 우라늄과 라돈의 함량 분포 특성)

  • In order to figure out the characteristics of radionuclides concentrations of nine provinces, we analyzed uranium and radon in 681 samples of groundwater. Most of uranium concentrations in each province were less than $10{\mu}g/L$, and Gyeongnam, Jeonnam, Jeju provinces did not have groundwaters exceeding the US EPA drinking water MCL ($30{\mu}g/L$) of uranium. The ratio of radon values exceeding US EPA drinking water AMCL (4,000 pCi/L) was 22.6% (154/681) and Gyeongnam and Jeju provinces had no groundwaters exceeding the AMCL (alternative maximum contaminant level). Uranium and radon concentrations in groundwaters of Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, Chungnam mainly composed of the Mesozoic granite and the Precambrian gneiss were relatively high, but the concentrations of Gyeongnam and Jeju widely comprised of the sedimentary rock and the volcanic rock were relatively low. A week correlation between uranium and radon values showed in Gangwon, Chungbuk, Gyeonggi provinces.

  • This paper aims to find out the effective solutions for overcoming the crisis of school closure in rural villages. Fortunately, we have some relevant cases that show the important roles of local communities providing rental houses to the potential residents. This study researches eight cases of elementary schools and their communities in Jeju which have overcome the crisis by providing rental houses to the immigrants. The results are as follows. First, it is effective to provide rental houses to prevent school closure crisis. Second, it is highly recommended to consider advancing schools for students and to offer possible jobs for their parents in order to make sustainable schools and communities. Third, in addition to the treatments for overcoming crisis of school closure, comprehensive measurements for improving new residents' quality of lives along with the collaboration between schools and communities, relations between natives and immigrants, and financial aids from central and local government should be implemented.

A study on adaptation measures to climate crisis for water supply system of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (제주특별자치도 상수도 기후위기 적응대책 연구)

  • Risk assessment on Jeju Special Self-Governing Province(JSSGP)'s water supply facilities and establishment of adaptation measures for climate crisis factors were implemented. JSSGP's vulnerability to the climate crisis was high in the order of drought, heat wave, heavy rain and strong wind. As a drought adaptation measure, policies of water saving and revenue water ratio improvement were considered. As for the heat wave adaptation measure, the introduction of an advanced water treatment process was suggested in response to the increase of algae cell number which resulting in taste and odor problem. As for heavy rain adaptation measures, the installation and operation of automatic coagulant injection devices for water purification plants that take turbid surface water were proposed. As a measure to adapt to strong winds, stabilization of power supply such as installation of dual power line was proposed in preparation for power outages. It is expected that water facilities will be able to supply high-quality tap water to customers even under extreme climate conditions without interruption through risk assessment for climate crisis factors and active implementation of adaptation measures.

Lifestyle, Depression, and Health Related Quality of Life among Women in Jeju Province (성인여성의 생활습관과 우울, 건강관련 삶의 질 -제주지역을 중심으로-)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate relations among lifestyle, depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of adult women in the Jeju Province. Methods: This study sampled 154 women aged 20 or older through convenience sampling and surveyed them from January to February, 2008. Results: The mean score for lifestyle was 3.7, for depression 12.1, and for HRQoL 75.2. There were significant negative correlations between lifestyle and depression, and between depression and HRQoL. There was a significant positive correlation between lifestyle and HRQoL. Conclusion: The results indicate that HRQoL of women is associated with lifestyle and depression. When developing programs to enhance health in women, consideration should be given to lifestyle and depression.
