  • Construction of wind power plant is increasing rapidly because Jeju island is known as the most suitable place for wind power plant. Rut wind power plant is difficult electric power control and it has a rapid electric power fluctuation. Such a problem has a bad influence on electric power network in small electric network like Jeju. Therefore, we forecast the amount of wind power plant construction by weather information and the rate of utilization for existing facility. We investigate the contribution degree for electric Power demand, economic effect, the case of power network influence. So we forecast influence of wind power plant for Jeju power network's operation in the near future.

  • Construction of wind power plant is rapidly increasing since Jeju is known as the most suitable regarding wind power plants in Korea. But implementing wind power generation inevitably introduces new challenges due to its intermittent nature. In the paper, it is introduced the influence analysis and Han-Kyung wind power plants contribution on Jeju power system.

  • The Haenyeo of Jeju exists as a unique human resource only in Korea and Japan in the world. Especially, the anti-Japan opposition movement of the Haenyeo of Jeju, which had started to get the right to live on their own in 1931, had developed as the national liberation movement by struggling against a colonial of Japan and the official regulation association that was a plundering organization of Japan. Accordingly, there is making an effort to register Jeju's women divers as The National Treasure in UNESCO's Memory of the world. In this research, we are going to make stuff like a digital storytelling, characters, animation movies, games, and hompage to let our children understand and succeed the spirit and culture of the Haenyeo. We'll also use these contents for the education. We examine ways to recreate the culture resources related to the Haenyeo who gradually vanishes.

  • Multiplex PCR and immunohistochemistry were used to detect and differentiate between porcine circovirus (PCV) type-I and the PCV associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Unique DNA product to PCV type-II was confirmed the some organs including lymph nodes, tonsil and spleen from eight pigs in Jeju by multiplex PCR. In this study, the samples were tested by a multiplex PCR assay to determine the type of PCV in each case; all cases were PCV type-II positive. PCV type-II was identified not only in typical PMWS cases, but also in field cases submitted with various clinical histories, some of which were not suggestive of PMWS. Immunohistochemically PCV type-II antigen was detected in macrophage-like cells in the tonsil, liver, lymph nodes and spleen, while some hepatocytes and renal tubular epithelial cells were also positive to the virus. This study suggested that PCV type-II is one of the causative agents of PMWS as well as the major type of PCV in the affected pigs in Jeju.

  • A chronic wasting disease in a 10-month-old Thoroughbred filly is described. The filly presented with chronic colic, which was charactered by progressive loss of weight. Over a period of a couple of days the filly suffered from serious colic and subsequently. Post-mortem examination revealed the cecocolic intussusception as a total invagination of the cecum into the right ventral colon. It seems logical to assume this invagination occurred at the start of the illness. In addition, there were also Anoplocephalar perfoliata in the cecum and the right ventral colon.

  • The number of wind generation installations are growing substantially in Jeju, Korea. Many of these installations are significant in size and directly connected to the distribution system. In these distributed applications, it is not uncommon for the turbines to be connected near the end of a long rural distribution feeder from which end-users are served. Therefore, utility grid interconnection standards for interconnecting non-utility distributed generation systems are essential to both power system company and generation company. In this paper, it is investigated the power quality of Sungsan substation bus connected to Hangwon wind power generation farm.

  • Plasmodium spp. in domestic and wild birds are microscopic, intracellular parasitic protozoa within the blood cells and tissues cause avian malaria. A 17-month-old Magellan penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) with a clinical signs of anorexia, depression, and respiratory distress for 3 days was submitted to the Pathology Department of Veterinary Medicine, Cheju National University in October 2005. It was born and reared in the Jeju Island. Grossly, the liver was enlarged, pale and friable. The spleen was also enlarged with dark red coloration and friable. Histopathologically, the lesions in the liver were characterized by multifocal infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes especially in perivascular regions. The schizonts of Plasmodium spp. contained up to 30 merozoites were found in numerous infiltrated mononuclear cells. Similarly, histiocytic cells were proliferated in red pulp of spleen and the schizonts were found in these cells. Numerous dark brown pigments were widely distributed in the liver and spleen. The result of the nested polymerase chain reaction clarified the causative agent of this case was Plasmodium spp.. This is the first report for the outbreak of avian malaria caused by Plasmodium spp. in a penguin that was born and reared in Jeju Island in Korea.

  • Antioxidative activities of Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta in Jeju Island were measured by superoxide anion ($O_2^{{\cdot}-}$), hydroxyl radical ($HO^{\cdot}$), hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) and DPPH free radical scavenging assays. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of the seaweeds were prepared at both temperatures, higher (70$^{\circ}C$) and room temperature (20$^{\circ}C$), and screened for the construction of an extract bank from seaweeds in Jeju Island. A variety of extracts showed positive effect against reactive oxygen species (ROS). Especially, Sargassum thunbergii methanolic extract at 70$^{\circ}C$ (70ME, 97.41%), S. fulvellum methanolic extract at 20$^{\circ}C$ (20ME, 84.66%), Codium fragile aqueous extract at 70$^{\circ}C$ (70AE, 96.61%) and S. thunbergii 20ME (97.44%) exhibited the highest scavenging activities against $O_2^{{\cdot}-}$, $HO^{\cdot}$, $H_2O_2$ and DPPH free radicals, respectively. Total phenolic contents also examined but did not show a positive correlation with ROS scavenging abilities (except for a few extracts). These results indicate that further investigation is needed to identify and purify the responsible antioxidative components.

  • Collection of moths in four Gotjawal terrains of Jeju Island was conducted using black light trap, beginning July through September 2005. The insects investigated were classified into 146 species, 15 families and 7 superfamilies, and Noctuoidea appeared to have accounted for 41.1%, or 60 species, which was the largest number among them, followed by Geometroidea. Ercheia niveostrigata was found to have been the dominant species over the entire area. The diversity index showed the highest at Aewol Gotjawal and the lowest at Hangyeong-Andeog Gotjawal. Aewol Gotjawal formed a cluster with Gujwa- Sungsan Gotjawal at the lowest chord distance (0.75). At the higher chord distance of 0.82, Jocheon- Hamdeog Gotjawal fused the cluster of Aewol Gotjawal and Gujwa-Sungsan Gotjawal. Hangyeong-Andeog Gotjawal fused with the rest three terrains, forming a single cluster at the highest chord distance of 0.89.
