Relationship between BMI and the Dining Out Behavior of University Students in the Seoul Area (대학생들의 BMI 지수에 따른 외식 식행동 - 서울지역을 중심으로)

  • A survey was conducted to determine the relationship between BMI and the dining out behaviors of 316 university students in Seoul area for May and September, 2006. The subjects included 114 males and 202 females. General characteristics and BMI determined that of the students 56 (17.7%) were underweight, 222 (70.3%)were normal, 23 (7.3%) were overweight, and 15 (4.7%) were obese. There were differences in BMI according to age, sex, and major. Students majoring in natural science and engineering were 58.3% and 51% normal weight, respectively, and the next most common weight class was overweight. The non smoking group showed had primarily normal weight subjects followed by underweight-subjects, but the smoking group had primarily normal weight subjects followed by overweight subjects (P<0.001). The frequency of dining out for breakfast significantly correlated with BMI (P<0.05). The group that frequently dined out for breakfast were primarily of normal weight followed by overweight subjects, but the group that rarely dined out for breakfast were primarily of normal weight followed by underweight subjects(21.4%). Groups whose criteria for selecting dining out meals were flavor and price showed a higher percentage of underweight subjects than other groups. The group whose motivations for choosing dining out meals were convenience and habit showed a higher percentage underweight subjects than other motivations. The group that selected the Western food menu for dining out showed a higher percentage of underweight subjects than other food menu groups. And, the groups that selected Japanese and Korean food were primarily of normal weight followed by underweight subjects, but the result was not significant.

An analysis on the Regional Geographies of Eight Countries for Improving 'the Geography of Korea' (한국지리 발전방안 마련을 위한 국외 8개국 지리지에 대한 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to derive the implications for improving 'the Geography of Korea' by analyzing the regional geographies of other countries. For this purpose, the regional geographies of eight countries are used: the United Kingdom, France, and Germany in Europe, the United States in America, Japan and China in Asia, and Turkey and Pakistan in Arab. After we select the representative regional geography for each country, its general characteristics, structure, style, and contents are analyzed. Based on the findings, implications for improving 'the Geography of Korea' are summarized in terms of the contents, style, and publication project. These implications suggest that 'the Geography of Korea' needs to be improved by explaining the regional identity in a more refined way and by attracting more readers.

Multilingual Word Translation Service based on Word Semantic Analysis (어휘의미분석 기반 다국어 어휘대역 서비스)

  • Multicultural family members have difficulty in educating their children due to language differences. In order to solve these difficulties, it is necessary to provide smart translation services that enable them easily and quickly access real-life vocabularies. However, the current automatic translation technology is being developed in dominant languages such as English, Chinese, and Japanese. There are also limitations to translating special-purpose terms such as documents of schools and instructions of public institutions. In this study, we propose a real-time automatic word translation service for multicultural family members who understand beginner level Korean. The service automatically analyzes the semantics of each word in the Korean sentences and provides a word-by-word translation. This study includes semantic analysis research for Korean language, building multilingual translation knowledge, and fusion study of language education. We evaluated the word translation service for migrant women from Vietnam and Japan and obtained meaningful evaluation results.

Diagnosis of Collegian's Adaptation Level for Autumn Environment (가을철 온열환경에 대한 대학생의 적응수준 진단)

  • The actual clothing conditions were surveyed to diagnose clothing condition of collegians in the view point of adaptation to the thermal environment in fall. Then, clothing climate, physiological responses, and subjective sensation were investigated through wearing trials on human subjects in climatic chamber based on the results from the survey. Factors to evaluate validity of clothing condition were clothing weight, clothing climate, physiological responses of human body, and subjective sensation. Adaptability of this research to thermal environment was compared to the results of Toda's and Duno's of Japan, Chung's results of Korea rural area, and Winslow's clo value. The standard values for wearing trials were values at comfortable zone, such as $32{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ of temperature and $50{\pm}10%$ of humidity inside clothing, $36.5{\sim}37.3^{\circ}C$ of ear temperature and $32.2{\sim}34.3^{\circ}C$ of mean skin temperature. Clothing weight per body surface area was 680.9 $g/m^2$ in male and 526.7 $g/m^2$ in women. Cold resistance ability of collegians was superior to Japanese and American, and similar to rural male in Korea. According to the examination of clothing adaptability with clothing weight from the investigation on physiological responses and the actual clothing conditions survey, following were found. Temperature inside clothing ($29.8{\sim}32.3^{\circ}C$) was normal, and humidity inside clothing (32.2~54.8%) was at comfortable zone. Mean skin temperature was at its comfortable zone. Therefore, 615 $g/m^2$ in male and 525 $g/m^2$ in female were a desirable wearing condition.

  • In the cosmetics field, facial skins have been classified into four types according to self estimation as well as physiological parameters. The aim of this study is to understand skin condition in the levels and composition of stratum corneum (SC) lipids, and to propose new classification for skin types. We assessed the relationship between the SC lipid composition and the self-estimated skin types or physiological parameters of the skin. Sensitive skin has been of great concern over the last decades, and it should be recognized as a skin type. Therefore, we also investigated the influence of the SC lipid composition on variations of sensitivity evaluated by the Stinging Test. Fifty-five healthy Japanese women aged 22-44 participated in this study. Skin biopsies were taken from facial skin using polyethylene sheet with cyanoacrylate. SC lipids were extracted and separated into individual lipid classes. The combined ceramides and cholesterol were quantified by HPTLC. Free fatty acid was quantified according to the ACS-ACOD method. Instrumental measurements were made at the site around the biopsy. In addition, the Stinging Test and a sensory evaluation questionnaire were administered to all subjects. The generally recognized O-D skin type classification is dependent on the consumer`s subjective assessment with respect to their skin troubles. The product of hydration state and skin surface lipid level showed a significant correlation with self-estimated skin types. The oily-dry skin type classified according to physiological parameters as well as SC lipid levels should be characterized as delicate skin with its barrier function deteriorating in the winter. Two groups of sensitive skin were established. One is the barrier function of the skin is deteriorated, and another is the sebaceous gland activity is in decline.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW NO-CONTACT METHOD TO MEASURE THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SKIN: NEW AGE-RELATED PARAMETERS

  • Real-time measurements of skin movement induced by air blown on the surface was measured with time. We investigated age-related changes in displacement of the skin surface on the face or the inner upper arm caused by air on 98 Japanese women volunteers aged from 10 to 70 years old. The maximum distance (the denting state) that the skin moved reached 2-5 mm within 10-15 msec on the cheek skin. After that, the skin generally recovered to the original state within 40-50 msec. The maximum speed of movement was 0.5 m/sec and the recovery speed was about 0.25 m/sec on the cheek skin. Significant changes with age were not observed in the denting state, but a significant correlation with age was observed in the recovery state. For example, the maximum recovery speed decreased significantly with age (p=-0.568, p<0.001) and the time required for recovery increased significantly with age (p=0.561, p<0.001). Although the inner upper arm also showed similar results to a cheek, a few parameters were different. This apparatus is a more practical macroscopic system for evaluating skin mechanical properties without contact. This apparatus is effective not only for measuring the mechanical properties of facial skin but also of body skin, such as swelling or sagging of body parts.

  • Based on the trend of pluralization and globalization the collapse of national borders now is a manifestation of mixed and compromised cultures and societies. It is also emerging as a hybrid fashion in fashion. Hybrid fashion means creating a new image by mixing various cultures beyond the time and space. This study aims to analyze the current state of Chinese fashion design and present its direction by grasping the characteristics of hybrids in the works of rising Chinese fashion designers in the era of pluralization. The research method was literature review and empirical research. According to the selection criteria of new fashion designers, 6 new fashion designers of 5 fashion brands were selected and their total 458 points works were analyzed. The analysis results are as follows. First, most of the time trade-offs were 'past and present' trade-offs that express Chinese traditional culture and the image of the past with modern design. The trade-offs between 'present and future' is expressed by mixing print patterns, colors and light with fractal art. Second, spatial trade-offs was expressed in the way of expressing Chinese themes in the composition of western clothing, expressing the Western themes in oriental colors, and inspired by Japanese culture expressed by deconstructionism, Third, the gender mix mainly used dark embroidery on women's clothing, while the men's wear showed a delicate feminine charm with a surreal pattern on thin and transparent gauze fabric.

Volatile Compounds Isolated from Edible Korean Fatsia Shoots (Aralia elata Seem.) (두릅의 휘발성 향기성분에 관한 연구)

  • The volatile concentrate obtained from the edible Korean dureup plant (Aralia elata Seem.) by a distillation-extraction system was separated into hydrocarbon and oxygen-containing fractions, and the latter was further separated into nine subfractions by silica gel column chromatography. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were utilized to identify 167 volatile compounds in the fractions. The volatile compounds included 72 hydrocarbons, 31 alcohols, 23 aldehydes, 16 esters, 10 acids, 6 ketons, 3 furans, 2 phenols, 1 indole, 1 oxide, 1 sulfide, and 1 lactone. ${\beta}-Caryopyllene$, a sesquiterpene hydrocarbon, was the most abundant volatile compound identified in Korean dureup (19.53%). Dureup oil was found to possess a woody or herbaceous aroma following sensory evaluation of each fraction and individual volatile component using a GC-sniff apparatus.

Effects of Foreign Wife Status and Social Capital on Fertility (외국인 배우자의 지위와 사회적 자본이 출산력에 미치는 영향)

  • The main purpose of this paper is to explore the impacts of foreign wife status and social capital on fertility among a group of Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese wives in Korea. Attention is focused on the argument that minority group status and immigrant social capital exerts an independent effect on fertility, apart from socioeconomic and demographic variables. It is hypothesized that the level and tempo of fertility of foreign wives reflect their social disadvantages and the adaptation process. Micro-data from two socio-demographic surveys were utilized to analyze the reproductive outcomes of foreign and native wives in Korea. Results of analyses reveal that foreign wives in Korea tend to have fewer children compared to native Korean women. It was found that a foreign wife's access to social capital significantly facilitates reproductive behavior. Those who engage themselves more in voluntary activities, have more friends in Korea, and possess better and higher-quality social networks tend to have more children. Foreign wives with a high degree of integration or assimilation to the new surroundings were also found to have more children than other foreign wives.

First Report of Tobacco mild green mosaic virus Infecting Pepper in Korea

  • A rod-shaped virus was isolated from pepper showing mild mosic during the winter growing seasons of 2001 and 2002 in Korea. Based on its biological reactions, serological relationships, reverse transcription-poly-merase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using specific primers, and nucleotide sequence analysis of coat protein (CP) gene, the isolated virus was identified as Tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV) and designated as Korean pepper isolate (TMGMV-KP). Crude sap from infected tissue was mechanically transmitted to various indicator plants, which produced characteristic symptoms of tobamovirus infection. However, no symptom was observed in Gomphorena globosa. In RT-PCR assays with specific primers toy respective detection of TMGMV, Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Pepper mild mottle virue (PMMoV), and Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), a single strong band of about 500 bp in length was produced from the sample used only with TMGMV primers. The amplified DNA was cloned and the nucleotide sequence was determined. Sequence comparisons with the CP gene of other tobamoviruses indicated that TMGMV-KP shared 99.3% identity with TMGMV Japanese isolate and only 59.1, 58.6, and 58.1% identity with TMV, PMMoV and ToMV, respectively. This is the first report of TMGMV in Korea.
