This study developed learning content and web pages providing information on Health/Functional Food (HFF) for consumers who come across information indiscriminately from a variety of advertising media such as the Internet and TV. After coming to an understanding of the current situation through literature review and fact-finding, we collected information and commercials on HFF that are exposed to consumers. Focusing on advanced countries such as the U.S. and Japan, we examined the current status of consumer education programs, especially in terms of HFF industry. Further, we referred to the guidelines for consumer education provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and monitored the information from a web site that sells dietary supplementary products in the U.S. In addition, we surveyed consumer information on foods for special health use provided by the Japanese National Institute of Health & Nutrition, and investigated a DB of raw materials of function food (functionality/safety documents). Upon a literature review, the 13 functions of HFF were classified. As a result of conducting interviews with consumers, we developed content that was fit for consumers' perspectives. Through this research, we established a web page to enable people to search for information by function and then by raw material. After searching for information by raw materials, searching products by raw materials can be done in cooperation with E-marketplace. Subsequently developed content and education programs were offered on an HFF web page, which has been in operation since 2005. Therefore, it is expected that appropriate information on HFF will be available.
The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge and attitude about oral contraceptive between Korean and Japanese university students in order to provide better sex education programs and direcrion. Korean subjects of this study were 337 university students in M city, during the period from April 1 to April 20, 2001 and Japanese subjects 245, during the period from June to August, 2001. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS package. The results from this study were summarized as follows : 1. The mean age of Koreans and Japanese students was $21.0{\pm}3.2$ and $19.6{\pm}3.2$ years old. The number of Japaneses youths having the parter with sexual intercourse was larger than that of Korean university students. 2. Comparison of knowledge and attitude about oral contraceptives between Korean and Japanese university students ; 1) Comparison of sexual differences : Oral contraceptives related knowledge of Korean university students marked $55.7{\pm}7.5$ of male students and $56.7{\pm}6.2$ of females with a range of 15 to 75. The level of female students' knowledge was higher than that of male's but there is not statistically a significant difference (p=.080). Oral contraceptives related attitude of Korean university students marked $81.1{\pm}12.2$ of male students and $76.9{\pm}10.3$ of female's with a range of 24 to 120. The level of male students' attitude was higher than that of female's and there is statistically a significant difference(p= 002). Oral contraceptives related knowledge of Japanese university students marked $55.3{\pm}6.7$ of male students and $57.0{\pm}6.3$ of female students. The level of female students' knowledge was higher than that of male's but there is not statistically a significant difference (p=.159). Oral contraceptives related attitude of Japanese university students marked $80.3{\pm}10.1$ of male students and $80.4{\pm}9.9$ of female students. The level of female students' attitude was higher than that of male's and there is not statistically a significant difference(p= .928). 2) Comparison between the country : Oral conceptives related knowledge of Korean university students marked $56.2{\pm}6.8$ and $56.7{\pm}6.4$ of Japanese university students with a range of 15 to 75. The level of Japanese university students' knowledge was higher than that of Korean's but there is not statistically a significant difference(p= .361). Oral conceptives related attitude of Korean university students marked $78.9{\pm}11.4$ and $80.4{\pm}9.9$ of Japaneses with a range of 24 to 120. The level of Japanese university studentss' attitude was higher than that of Korean's and there is not statistically a significant difference(p=.100). 2. Wanted age of oral contraceptives taking medicine and age was correlated positively (r=.178, p=.004) and total knowledge score of oral contraceptives and total attitude score were correlated positively(r=.467 p= .000) in Korean university students. Think that this is result by dissimilar health medical system and cultural difference between two countries.
Ethyl carbamate (EC) classified as a probable human carcinogen (Group 2A) is naturally formed in alcoholic beverages and fermented foods during fermentation process and/or during storage. The objective of this study was to analyze EC in 34 food items including 14 alcoholic beverages and 20 fermented foods sold in Korea. Each food was collected from 18 supermarkets in 9 metropolitan cities in Korea, and then made into composite. According to food composition and alcohol content, samples were divided into four matrices such as apple juice, milk, Soju (liquor containing about 20% alcohol), and rice porridge. The maximum EC value of $151.06{\mu}g/kg$ was found in Maesilju (liquor made from Maesil and Soju). Whisky and Bokbunjaju (Korean black raspberry wine) contained $9.90{\mu}g/kg$ and $6.30{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. EC was not detected in other alcoholic beverages. Of 20 fermented foods, Japanese-style soy sauce had highest level of $15.59{\mu}g/kg$ and traditional one contained $4.18{\mu}g/kg$. Soybean paste had $1.18{\mu}g/kg$, however, EC was not found in other fermented foods.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the contents of disaster nursing education at universities in Korea and Japan, with focus on textbooks. Methods: Disaster nursing contents from 11 Korean community health nursing textbooks and 3 Japanese disaster nursing textbooks were analysed. Results: Three themes and 8 categories of disaster nursing content in the selected textbooks were analyzed. The themes classified include 'understanding of disaster', 'disaster management' and 'disaster management system'. The theme of 'understanding of disaster' consists of such categories as 'disaster concept/outline', 'classification of disaster', 'disaster management step' and 'disaster impact'. The theme of 'disaster management activities' consists of categories such as 'disaster management activities' and 'disaster nursing'. The theme of 'national disaster management system' consists of categories like 'national disaster management system' and 'international disaster relief'. From the comparison of disaster nursing education in the two countries, we found that themes were similar but there were differences between the two countries in content configuration. Korea and Japan have adopted the framework of International Council of Nurses for disaster nursing education. Korea stressed legal and ethical capabilities, while Japan included psychological support for disaster management service providers. Conclusion: Disaster education is an important factor in a nurse's ability for a disaster management. Development of a comprehensive disaster education program is necessary to enhance disaster care capacities.
To commonly apply the ${\ulcorner}$Measurement parameter for housewives for rearing-related supports of a husband${\lrcorner}$ in Korea and Japan, the current study conducted to confirm the relationship between recognition of a housewife for rearing-related supports of a husband and mental health after reviewing the appropriateness of the parameter. For the statistical analysis, 829 married Korean women in D city and 1,302 Japanese women in S city having children before entering a school were subjected for the study. For reviewing the appropriateness of the parameter, the simultaneous factor analysis that adopted the structural equation modeling was used. As the result of the analysis, 10 categories of factor structural model comprising the ${\ulcorner}$Recognition of a housewife for rearing-related supports of a husband${\lrcorner}$ resulted with the secondary model which sets of ${\ulcorner}$Recognition for emotional support${\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}$Recognition for instrumental support${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$Recognition for information support${\lrcorner}$ as the primary factor and ${\ulcorner}$Recognition of a housewife for rearing-related supports of a husband${\lrcorner}$ as the secondary factor, and the model was found to be appropriate for the data in Korea and Japan. The result is considered to prove the constructs validity of ${\ulcorner}$Recognition of a housewife for rearing-related supports of a husband${\lrcorner}$ parameter. In addition, the relationship between ${\ulcorner}$Recognition of a housewife for rearing-related supports of a husband${\lrcorner}$ and mental health(GHQ) was reviewed by using multiple indicator model, and found the similarity of Korean and Japanese data. The scores measured by using the above parameter resulted to show high relationship with educational level of housewife, family configuration, and number of children.
The purpose of this study is to widen the subject of research to the whole social activity, which is divided into the following four categories in the previous study on "Reality of social activity of senior citizen": 1. work 2. social participation and volunteer activity 3. learning activity 4. individual activity, and to clarify which category is most related to the masticatory ability. There were 57korean subjects in the survey: aged 65 through 85 (73.8$\pm$5.5), 81 women: aged 65 through 85 (74.3$\pm$5.3), a total of 138: aged 65 through 85 (74.1$\pm$5.4), in College for senior citizen of A city, Buddhist College for senior citizen of A city and senior citizen's welfare facility of A city who gave consent to the research The Japanese subject were 38 men: aged 65 through 85(75.3$\pm$5.4), 54 women: aged 65 through 85(75.5$\pm$5.2), a total of 92: aged 65 through 85(75.4$\pm$5.2) in women's division of F city Federation of Senior Citizens' Club, Otsuka division of B ward Federation of Senior Citizens' Club and S ward Federation of Senior Citizens' Club who gave consent to the research. The major findings were as follows: A social activity, individual activity were active in a social activity domain on a day so that people of Japanese advanced age had you, and writing ability was high, and, as for freezing, learning activity was active for people of Korean advanced age in a social activity domain so that writing ability was high.

Objcetive: The purpose of this study was to establish body mass index percentiles and cutoffs for overweight and obesity in East Asian Adolescent. Methods: Based on one's age and gender, subjects were selected and measured their weight and height in order to calculate BMI. For BMI cut off points, data were analyzed and percentile curves were established by the modified LMS method. Results were followed by comparing BMI cut off points and percentiles with one's nationality, age and gender. Results: The prevalence of male's overweight and obesity among East Asian adolescent were as follows: Taiwan (15.4%, 9.0%), Korean (14.5%, 8.5%), Chinese (13.3%, 6.6%), and Japanese (6.0%, 2.1%). And for female, Korean (13.1%, 3.7%), Taiwan (12.6%, 5.1%), Chinese (8.3%, 2.3%) and Japanese (7.9%, 3.1%) were in the order. Conclusion: Corresponded to the whole subjects, 11.0% of men were overweight, 4.7 were obesity and that appeared in women with 9.0% in overweight, 3.5% were obese.
Objectives: The objective of this review article was to verify the accreditation plan of the Korean council on school of public health(KCSPH). Methods: Two data were used in order to review the topic of this article. The first one was a catalog compiled by journal articles published in Korea. Second data was accquired from websites created by 24 member universities of KCSPH. Results: The issue of accreditation has been discussed officially for decades. The confusion in the essence of public health seems to be intensified by the influence of Japanese health education system. Accordingly current SPHs in Korea are relatively multifarious and seem to suffer from an identity problem. Conclusions: The accreditation plan issued by KCSPH is valid and public health problem in Korea.
This study investigated body images based on the survey data drawn from college students in three East Asian countries(Korea, Japan, and China). 347 Korean, 341 Chinese, and 271 Japanese college students responded to questions designed to measure body images such as body-related values (operability, inclination, locus of evaluation, and instrumentality of appearance), body esteem (appearance, and health), and objectified body-consciousness ( surveillance and shame). The results showed that body images differ among countries. Regarding body-related values, Korean students have least conservative beliefs and followed by Japanese, and Chinese. Korean students showed the highest acceptance level for the voluntary body alteration(operability), highest inclination to body appearance over health. They also showed the strongest tendency of evaluating their body from the observer's point of view and the strongest belief about the social utility of body appearance compare to Japanese and Chinese students. Appearance- esteem of Korean was similar to Chinese but higher than Japanese. Surveillance and shame about body appearance of Korean students were similar to Japanese but higher than Chinese. Compare to male students, females showed stronger belief about the body appearance over health, lower appearance esteem, and higher surveillance and shame about body. Korean women showed the least conservative body-related values, and the levels of body appearance esteem and objectified body consciousness were located in between Japanese and Chinese women. Japanese women showed especially low body appearance esteem and highest surveillance and shame. Chinese women showed the most conservative body-related value, the highest appearance-esteem, and the lowest surveillance and shame. It was revealed that the body-related values indirectly affect to appearance-esteem through the mediating role of objectified body consciousness in Chinese and Japanese samples, but that the body-related values had direct effect on appearance-esteem as well in Korean sample.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Due to recent changes in social structure, single-person households are on the rise worldwide and therefore the interest in the quality of life of singles is increasing, but the research on the relationships related to their diet-related quality of life is scarce. This research analyzes the structural relations in the effect of convenience food satisfaction and quality of life according to dietary style of Korean, Japanese and Chinese singles. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The targets of this study were Korean, Japanese, and Chinese singles, identified as adults between the ages of 25 and 54, having economic capabilities or working and living alone, either legally or in actuality having no partner. A statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS12.0 for Windows and SEM using AMOS 5.0 statistics package. The reliability of these findings was supported by a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.6 and higher for all the factors. In an attempt to study the level of satisfaction with convenience food in accordance to dietary style and the quality of life of singles, a structural equation model was constructed and analyzed. RESULTS: Of the three countries, regarding the effect of dietary style on singles' quality of life, the convenience-oriented style was found to have a negative effect on Korean singles' overall quality of life, but a positive effect on Japanese singles' overall quality of life, and a negative effect on Chinese singles' positive psychological aspect of quality of life. In addition, although Chinese singles have a high level of interest in health, they have an overall high level of satisfaction regarding fast food and its nutritional value. CONCLUSIONS: The number of singles in Korea, Japan, and China has been consistently increasing in recent years, and there is a need for continuous interest in their healthy dietary lifestyles in terms of convenience, economy, and taste.
