  • This paper investigates the cost structure ot the Korea and Japan railroad industry with respect to density, scale and scope economies as well as productivity growth rate using a generalized trans)og multiproduct cost function model. The paper then assumes that the Korea and Japan railway companies pi·educe three outputs (incumbent railway passenger-kilometers. Shinkansen passenger-kilometers, ton-kilometers of freight) using four input factors (labor, fuel, maintenance, rolling stock and capital). The specified cost function includes foul other independent variables: track lengths to reflect network effects, two dummies to reflect nation and ownership effects, and time trend as a proxy for technical change. The simultaneous equation system consisting of a cost function and three input share equations is estimated with the Zellner's iterative seemingly unrelated regression. The unbalanced panel data used in the paper, a total of 154 observations. are collected from the annual records of the Korea National Railroad (KNR) for the yews $1977{\sim}2003$, Japan National Railways (JNR) for the years $1977{\sim}1984$. seven Japan Railways (JR's) for the years $1987{\sim}2003$. The findings show that the Korean and Japanese railways exhibit product-specific and overall economies of density but product-specific diseconomies of scale with respect to incumbent railway passenger-kilometers, Shinkansen-kilometers and ton-kilometers. However, the railways experience mild overall economies of scale which result from economies of scope associated with the joint production of incumbent railway/Shinkansen and feight, freight/incumbent railway and Shinkansen except Shinkansen/incumbent railway and freight. In addition, the economies of density and scale in the KNR, JR east, JR central, and JR west companies at the point of the years $1990{\sim}2003$ average is generally analogous to the above results at the point of sample average. There also appear to be economies of ssope associated with the joint Production of the incumbent railway and Shinkansen in JR central but diseconomies of scope in JR East and JR West. The findings also indicate that the productivity growth rate of the privately-owned JR's is larger than that of the government-owned KNR.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to know and understand the user requirements to provide with intelligent railway information service in response to the Ubiquitous environment. The railroad specially has a disadvantage of door-to-door service, however by using the information and communication techniques, we can provide the passengers who are using the intermodal transportation means with the realtime information, therefore we can overcome the above disadvantage. To deduce the passenger's needs for providing the future-type railway information service, we introduce the results of the questionnaire. In chapter 2, we studies on the concepts of intelligent railway information service, and in chapter 3, we investigate the cases of Japan and China, and in chapter 4, we study the passager's satisfaction by the questionnaire concerning the railway information service and suggest the needs for information offering.

  • Life cycle assessment(LCA) has been developed from the concept of life cycle thinking. Life cycle thinking implies that everyone in the whole chain of a product's life cycle, from cradle to grave, has a responsibility and a role to play, taking into account all the relevant external effects. LCA is an analytical tool for identifying environmental loads and assessing the environmental impact in the whole chain of a product's life cycle. In Europe and Japan, LCA and ecodesign study for railway industry have been actively carried out recently. However, LCA for railway industry in domestic is still infant. LCA is standardized in International Organization of Standardization(ISO), base on the ISO 14040 standards, 307 life cycle inventory(LCI) database for infrastructure and base materials have been established in total since 1999. Some of LCI database can use in performing LCA for trains and railway infrastructure, but still not enough to derive accurate LCA result. Therefore, railway oriented LCA methodology and LCI DB are needed to be developed.

  • The newly established high speed railway station may function not only just as a traffic convergence but also as an energizing force with multiple roles in the context of municipal environment. As a result, the development of high speed railway station zone will be considered as great opportunities as well to enhance quality of life of the neighboring inhabitants, as to develop new footholds for the inner-municipal growth and mobilization. The main purpose of this article is to offer guidelines about the effects of development of the high speed railway station zone seen from multiple aspects of municipal lifes and functions. To attain this purpose, the definition of high speed railway station zone, its characteristics, and its roles will be handled with the case of advanced countries such as Japan and France. And some lessons will be proposed based on them.

  • As the European Union has strengthened and computerized signalling systems have been widely used, the European common standards for the safety of railway signalling systems such as EN 50126, EN 50128, ENV 50129, EN 50159 began to be published from 1996 in CENELEC. At that time, a safety guideline, 'Safety Guidelines for Computerized Train Control and Protection Systems' was published in Japan. The Korean National Railroad also published a safety recommendation for the train control systems with taking into account the Korean railway conditions. Now the preparations for IEC/TC9 Standards are well underway and these standards correspond to CENELEC Standards referred above. These movements and activities are to cope with many technical and operational changes and to reflect the globalization trend of railway sectors along with the computerization of signalling devices. In this connection, this paper studies the globaliztion trend in the safety standards for railway signalling systems and discusses the counterplans for the trend.

  • Due to global climate change issues, there is a growing demand for systems throughout the industry. In the case of power conversion, studies have been actively conducted to change the structure of the power conversion circuit and to apply new power devices. In particular, the WBG (Wide Band Gap), which is newly emerged device in the market for developing semiconductor technology, has demonstrated advantages in applying for various aspects in comparison to the existing Si (Silicon) Semiconductor. Recent research centers in the railway industry are focusing on developing technologies suitable for railway vehicles by utilizing these new developments in railway countries such as Japan and Europe. This paper researches the WBG device that is applicable to the auxiliary power supplies (APS) in railway system, and analyzes the downsizing effects to APS in high-speed railway by conducting a theoretical analysis and simulation.

  • This study examines the change of Shinchon railway station in Kyungui Railway from 1920 up to now. Kyungui Railway was constructed in order to prepare the war against Russia by Japan in 1905. Shinchon station was constructed in 1920 for the sake of convenience of people who lived near Seoul. Recently the development of Shinchon staton was demended because of the possibilities of economic development and the location of Shinchon station. But at the same time there are many opinions against the development of Shinchon station because it has many great memories and it is a kind of symbol of modem life in Shinchon. Even though Shinchon station has developed for a shopping center, the location of the old station has been kept. But the shape had changed because of the new railway station. So the purpose of this paper is considering how to solve the conflicts between the development and the preservation of historic places in the cities which is one of the most serious pending issues.

  • In this study, the fatigue life assessments of steel railway bridge in Japan National Railway were carried out. This railway bridge has been under in service from 1957, and fatigue damages were occurred at bead toe of upper part of vertical stiffeners of stringers, bead toes of scallop in lower part of vertical stiffeners in stringers and crossings of cross beams and stringers. From this study, a series of field tests were carried out by stress history measurement about above mentioned points. And as a results of stress histogram analysis, cummulative fatigue damage rate and fatigue life of these members should be calculate quantitatively. And from this estimation technique, cummulative fatigue damage rate and fatigue life of this railway bridge were strongly affected in passing tonage every year and the histories of live load.

  • Dynamic instability of the railway bridge can cause track irregularities and be directly connected with unstable passenger comfort and derailment of the train. Europe and Japan had studied on this problem for a long time since 1960's, Results of those studies are reflected in recent Eurocode and the bridge design code of Japanese railway bridges. However, even though some traffic safety requirements were applied in Kyoung-bu highspeed railway by French engineers, we experienced many difficulties from insufficient information of criteria background and application procedures. In the present study, various studies will be presented for the estimation of dynamic performance will be proposed and procedures and methods of estimation will be shown.
