  • Korean military is currently using and operating a precision approach and landing system, called RAPCON (ASR/PAR), which is imported from overseas. However, drawbacks of this system are operational and cost problems that come along, e.g. straightness of the radio waves, limited ability of narrow searching, lack of interoperability, and high cost of installation and maintenance. Moreover, as the civilian air traffic control uses a similar system compared to the military, the so called DME/VOR/ILS, disturbance between these two systems triggered the consideration of GNSS as alternative system. In this paper, we conduct a research on trends in the field of precise approach and landing systems based on GNSS, analyze weaknesses of GNSS(jamming, fault) and consider possible solutions. Furthermore, we propose the precise approach and landing system based on GNSS to be used by the Korean military as we found it to be also suitable for military purposes. Finally, we examine the benefits of a domestic development with different focuses(development/cost of mass production/operational advantages and potential for increased performance).

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), acting as mobile base stations (BSs), can be deployed in the typical fifth-generation mobile communications (5G) scenarios for the purpose of substantially enhancing the radio coverage. Meanwhile, UAV aided underlay device-to-device (D2D) communication mode can be activated for further improving the capacity of the 5G networks. However, this UAV aided D2D communication system is more vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks, resulting in security risks. In this paper, the D2D receivers work in full-duplex (FD) mode, which improves the security of the network by enabling these legitimate users to receive their useful information and transmit jamming signal to the eavesdropper simultaneously (with the same frequency band). The security communication under the UAV coverage is evaluated, showing that the system's (security) capacity can be substantially improved by taking advantage of the flexible radio coverage of UAVs. Furthermore, the closed-form expressions for the coverage probabilities are derived, showing that the cellular users (CUs)' secure coverage probability in downlink transmission is mainly impacted by the following three factors: its communication area, the relative position with UAV, and its eavesdroppers. In addition, it is observed that the D2D users or DUs' secure coverage probability is relevant to state of the UAV. The system's secure capacity can be substantially improved by adaptively changing the UAV's position as well as coverage.

  • Tabriz is a large Iranian city and the capital of the East Azerbaijan province. The bed rock of this city is mainly consisted of marl layers. Marl layers have some outcrops in the northern and eastern parts of city that mainly belong to the Baghmisheh formation. Based on their colors, these marls are classified into three types: yellow, green, and gray marls. The city is developing toward its eastern side wherein various civil projects are under construction including tunnels, underground excavation, and high-rise building. In this regard, the swelling behavior assessment of these marls is of critical importance. Also, in lightweight structures with foundation pressure less than swelling pressure, several problems such as walls cracking and jamming of door and windows may occur. In the present study, physical properties and swelling behavior of Baghmisheh marls are investigated. According to the X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results, the marls are mainly composed of Illite, Kaolinite, Montmorillonite, and Chloride minerals. Type and content of clay minerals and initial void ratio have a decisive role in swelling behavior of these marls. The swelling potential of these marls was investigated using one-dimensional odometer apparatus under stress level up to 10 kPa. The results showed that yellow marls have high swelling potential and expansibility compared to the other marls. In addition, green and gray marls showed intermediate and low swelling potential and swelling pressure, respectively.

  • It is generally known that high strength soil is indicative of well-graded particle size distribution. However, there are some special cases of firm ground despite poor grade distribution, especially a specific gap-graded soil. Based on these discoveries, this study investigated the development of an additive of gap-graded soils designed to increase soil strength. This theoretical concept was used to calculate the mixed ratio required for optimal soil strength of the ground sample. The gap-graded aggregate was added according to Plato's polyhedral theory and subsequently calculated ratio and soil strength characteristics were then compared to characteristics of the original soil sample through various test results. In addition, the underground stress transfer rate was measured according to the test conditions. The test results showed that the ground settlement and stress limit thickness were reduced with the incorporation of gap-graded soil. Further field tests would confirm the reproducibility and reliability of the technology by using gap-graded soil to reinforce soft ground of a new construction site. Gap-graded soil has the potential to reduce the construction cost and time of construction compared to other reinforcing methods.

  • Internet Service Providers (ISPs) constantly endeavor to resolve network congestion, in order to provide fast and cheap services to the customers. This study suggests two models based on Markov chain, using three and four access attempts to complete the call. It involves a comparative study of four models to check the relationship between Internet Access sharing traffic, and the possibility of network jamming. The first model is a Markov chain, based on call-by-call attempt, whereas the second is based on two attempts. Models III&IV suggested by the authors are based on the assumption of three and four attempts. The assessment reveals that sometimes by increasing the number of attempts for the same operator, the chances for the customers to complete the call, is also increased due to blocking probabilities. Three and four attempts express the actual relationship between traffic sharing and blocking probability based on Markov using MATLAB tools with initial probability values. The study reflects shouting results compared to I&II models using one and two attempts. The success ratio of the first model is 84.5%, and that of the second is 90.6% to complete the call, whereas models using three and four attempts have 94.95% and 95.12% respectively to complete the call.

  • When radar return contains strong jammers along with ground clutter echo, a STAP(space-time adaptive processing) algorithms tend to suppress jammer components more severely than it does the clutter. This hinders moving target detection in that the target echo is apt to be buried by clutter echo. This paper presents a two-step STAP algorithm in which the pre-suppression of jammer by the spatial filtering is applied, prior to applying the STAP algorithm. We propose how to find the coefficients of the spatial filter and show that the spatial filtering barely alter the spectra of the target and the clutter echo, having only to suppress the jammers. Finally, we simulate a STAP scenario with strong jammers and show the proposed algorithm can improve STAP performance.

  • According to the 2020 industrial accident reports of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the number of fatal accidents in the construction industry over the past 5 years has been higher than in other industries. Of these more than 50% of fatal accidents are initially caused by fall accidents. The central government is intensively managing falling/jamming protection device and the use of personal protective equipment to eradicate the inappropriate factors disrupting safety at construction sites. In addition, although efforts have been made to prevent safety accidents with the proposal of the Special Act on Construction Safety, fatalities on construction sites are constantly occurring. Therefore, this study developed a model that automatically detects the wearing state of the worker's safety helmet and belt using computer vision technology. In considerations of conditions occurring at construction sites, we suggest an optimization method, which has been verified in terms of the accuracy and operation speed of the proposed model. As a result, it is possible to improve the efficiency of inspection and patrol by construction site managers, which is expected to contribute to reinforcing competency of safety management.
