Lean Startup and New Product Innovation - Focused on Idol TWICE Case - (린스타트업과 신제품 혁신 - 아이돌 가수 트와이스 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • New product innovation is a key component of a company's survival and sustained growth. With the rapidly changing market environment and global infinite competition, The importance of innovative new product development is growing. In the domestic entertainment industry, Competition is intensifying, and many companies are focusing on developing innovative new products in order to secure continuous competitive advantage in the era of global infinite competition. The problem is that as the intensity of competition increases and the idol production system develops more and more, The costs of planning and marketing are increasing. The fair trade commission estimated the cost of creating an idol group to be about 1 billion won, and some large entertainment companies claim that the investment cost is about 20 ~ 3 billion won. Lean startup is attracting attention as an innovation framework for sustainable competitive advantage of companies. But, there are not many related studies in Korea despite the growing interest. In particular, Case studies that can help to establish specific strategies are limited. Therefore, this study analyzed the successful case of JYP Entertainment's idol singer TWICE who succeeded in new product innovation and suggested practical implications. Theoretically, This study extended the Lean startup to the entertainment industry and suggested practical implications as the basic data for establishing the innovation strategies for the idol singers of domestic entertainment companies.

A Study on the Consumer Evaluation of CSR Activities, Risk Management, and Producing Ability of Entertain Companies on the Perception of Integrated Brand Assets : Focusing on SM, JYP, YG, and HYBE (국내 엔터테인먼트 기업의 CSR 활동, 리스크 관리, 프로듀싱 능력에 대한 소비자 평가가 통합 브랜드 자산 인식에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : SM, JYP, YG, 하이브를 중심으로)

  • This study investigates how domestic entertainment companies' CSR activities, risk management, and producing abilities affect consumers' perception of their integrated brand assets. A survey was conducted on college students enrolled in a four-year university, and a total of 423 data were used for analysis. The result indicates the following. First, consumer evaluation of economic activity and philanthropic activity showed a positive causal relationship with the perception of integrated brand assets. Second, the higher the risk management and producing ability on evaluation of entertainment companies, the more positive the perception of integrated brand assets. Third, the main effect of producing ability was found to be significant among the four companies. In addition, regardless of the evaluation level of CSR activities and risk management, the group with a high producing ability evaluation showed a higher perception of integrated brand assets than the group with a low level of evaluation.

Penetration Strategies of SM Entertainment in Global Market (SM 엔터테인먼트의 글로벌 시장 진출 특성)

  • Korean entertainment companies like SM entertainment, YG and JYP contribute enormously to the recent K-pop fever. They expand their businesses aggressively to foreign markets which has been successful. This paper seeks to find out their precise strategies to succeed in the global market. Our study focus on SM entertainment which manages successively in the Asian market. As a result, one of their successful strategies on the global market is localization. They rearrange a group with in the members to suit into the local market : for instance, Super Junior, representative boy group, has rearranged and reformed to Super Junior M (mandarin), Super Junior happy (for Japan market), etc. Coopration with SNS (Social Network Service) is another successful strategies of SM Entertainment : page views of K-pop on Youtube achieved more than 0.8 billion in 2013. Furthermore, for marketing, many members play an advertizing model for global products.

Case Analysis and Prospect of K-POP Performance Art's Overseas Entry by Joint Venture (K-POP 공연 예술의 합작 투자에 의한 해외 진출 사례 분석 및 전망)

  • Companies are seeking to maximize profits through exports and imports in the ultra-fast, ultra-high-speed modern society. It is only possible to sustain its survival if it targets the global market, not based on any specific region. The K-POP group is also targeting overseas markets in a manner similar to the various global strategies used when companies make inroads into foreign markets, including exports, contracts and direct investment. The K-POP group is engaged in various forms of activities, ranging from simple forms of performance (export) that are visited and staged by an invitation from a certain foreign country to series performances (license) by an invitation from a local promoter and tour performances using its capabilities. The K-POP group is seeking to go beyond the art of single-stage performances and make a systematic plan and make inroads into foreign countries in the form of direct investment suitable for each foreign country. The K-POP group made inroads into overseas markets in the form of simple performances from the late 1990s to 2005, when 'Korean Wave' was first introduced. Group H.O.T., etc. are typical examples. Since then, it has sought to enter overseas markets in the form of franchises by accepting overseas members by 2018, starting with Super Junior in 2005. Since then, the K-POP group in the form of joint investment attempted as group IZ*ONE in 2018 appeared, and a voice story came out in September 2018 when South Korea's JYP Entertainment and Tencent of China joined forces. Unlike K-POP Group, which has entered foreign markets with a global strategy based on the existing export method (H.O.T.), 'Boystory' is a representative group that is made with joint investment, which is a direct investment method. In February 2020, RBW released 'D1Verse,' a five-member group selected by Vietnam's reality show, as a joint investment-type group. This shows the possibility that domestic and foreign companies will release a group in the form of joint investment in order to pursue both globalization and localization.
