  • Recent results in applied statistics have shown that the presence of periodicities in time series may influence the estimation and testing of the fractional differencing parameter. In this article, we provide further evidence on the issue by using several procedures of fractional integration. The results show that in the presence of periodicities, the order of integration can be erroneously detected. An empirical application in the context of seasonal data is also carried out at the end of the article.

  • This paper relates recent empirical research on the growth. Smaller and younger firms have been growing more quickly than larger and older firms, thus, generating proportionately more new jobs. It is not difficult to understand why small and medium firms receive so much attention. Because SMEs provide about 80 percent of private sector employment so SMEs performance is an important economic and social factor. Despite this, they are subject to higher risk and mobility than those at the large firms. This paper is analyzes the relationship between firm growth measured as growth in employment, sales and production and firms age, size and R&D investment. The growth and its relationship with the determinants is linked to industrial policy in Korea. Empirical results are based on an unbalanced panel data covering period 1999-2002. Results show significant relationship between growth, size and age of firm.

  • This study determines whether or not firms can achieve high productivity growth through external technology acquisition. It also identifies the key factors affecting adopting firms' productivity growth by employing the Malmquist productivity index (MPI) methodology, which features computational ease, low data dependency, and decomposition of productivity growth into technical efficiency change and technical change. Results showed that the effects of productivity growth arising from technology transfer became stronger over time. Moreover, patent transfer guaranteed firms' productivity growth, but no evidence was found that factors such as age and size could increase productivity. Finally, cultural similarity could be another factor conditioning the effectiveness of technology transfer in the productivity of adopting firms.

  • This paper aims to provide a better understanding about how Information and Communication technology (ICT) has diffused. The investigation is conducted with the consideration of ICT evolution in terms of technological change and usage pattern. The definition used is presented as 'the ICT is a process of convergence of technologies between information-processing and information-transforming technologies, mainly due to the advent of microelectronlcs'. After examining technological changes of ICT, the diffusion path of ICT is traced through the usage ratio in total input and/or investment based on Input-Output tables (I-O). It shows that the evolution of ICT from the change of usage pattern is an up-and-down usage pattern rather than a uni-modal usage time path. With this recognition, the diffusion index is prepared. • Inverse demand models are well established as market demands in theory and practice of the existing literature. However, the derivation and its interpretation of individual demands from the market demands are not well known in the literature. This paper analyzes the fish market in Korea by the inverse demand model and shows how we deduce the consumer's responses from the market responses when the markets determine the prices by the quantities demanded. It illustrates empirically how this can be done applying to the korean fish market data. The empirical results show that all fishes are price inflexible and mackerels and hairtails are scale flexible in the market demand while mackerels, hairtails, and croakers are price elastic and mackerels and hairtails are income inelastic in the individual demand. The methodology and empirics used in the paper will make a contribution to the existing literature especially for the purpose of recovering consumer's demand from the market demand, thus implementing the policies to administer the fish markets.

  • This article examines social determinants of population health in OECD countries, where life years, infant mortality, and PYLL are used as proxy variables of health. The unit of analysis is a country which is the OECD affiliate. A panel regression estimation is chosen as a method, using OECD Health Data. The results are: the increasing national health expenditure affected positively to improve population health. Education was rather a significant determinant of health than income level. The government direct investment for public health did not contribute positively to enhance population health. The expansion of health care coverage was working positively for improving health, but with a time lag. The supply of doctors was a most influential determinant of health. In case of Korea, the coverage expansion of health care was the most important determinant of health. The supply of doctors was, however, not a positive factor for better health, which is different result with the case of OECD countries.

  • This research compares the use of accounting data versus market data in the prediction of bankruptcy. Comparison is made through neural networks so that prediction accuracy is model-independent. Results of this study indicate that both market and accounting data provide useful information on corporate bankruptcies. Interestingly, using market and accounting information together can achieve substantial gain in prediction accuracy.

  • Experts of medicine, philosophy and psychology found that human somatotypes were related to personality or physical characteristics and classified somatotypes into various forms. This study explored the changes and types of somatotyping methods from Before Christ to present day and identified the status of studies of somatotypes in the area of physical therapy. This study covered the methods applied in various majors with a focus on those provided in books and papers of Heath BH. and Carter JEL. Based on the results, there are officially twelve assessment methods. Currently, the method of Heath & Carter is most widely applied. Somatotypes are studied in many areas. It is actively explored in the area of pain physical therapy, thermotherapy and integumentary physical therapy. Also, the soft tissue physical therapy area seeks interdisciplinary studies. This study found that there were various assessment methods in diverse areas. It is likely that continuous studies will develop new assessment methods. It is hoped that in the area of physical therapy, somatotypes shall be applied more amply.

  • In this paper we examines the relation between net purchase of foreign and institution investors and stock returns in Korean stock market. For this study, KOSPI returns are classified into three parts: close to close, close to open and open to close returns. Close to close returns is measured by the closing price of t-1 day and the closing price of t day. Close to open returns is measured by the closing price of t-1 day and the opening price of t day. Open to close returns is measured by the opening price of t day and the closing price of the day. Empirically major findings are as follows. First, the previous day both foreign and institution investors' behavior have an statistically significant negative effect on the close to close returns. However, the current day their behavior positively affect close to close returns. Second, the previous day both foreign and institution investors' net purchase have a significantly positive effect on the open to close returns. Finally, the previous day foreign behavior has little effect on open to close returns, but institution investors negatively affect open to close.

  • This paper investigates factors determining the level of nontraditional activities at banks around the world. Specifically, the paper examines what kinds of firm-specific and country-specific characteristics determine the level of noninterest income using a comprehensive multi-country database. This paper focuses beyond the traditional U.S. based analyses and provides detailed asset-liability management practices of banks around the world. The findings suggest that banks' size and loan loss provision, explicit deposit insurance, banking restriction, banking freedom ranking of respective countries, the extent of state and foreign ownership, governance, and transparency of the country have positive effects on the level of nontraditional activities. Greater dependence on traditional lending and financing, market based economy, and multiple bank supervisory bodies in the country have negative associations with noninterest income. The economic development of country however affects the extent of the relationship.
