  • Precipitates, present in most commercial alloys, can have a strong influence on strength and hardening behavior of a single crystal. The effect of thin precipitates on the anisotropy of initial slip resistance and hardening behavior of crystals is modeled in this article. For the convenience of the computational derivation and implementation, the material formulation is given in the unrelated intermediate configuration mapped by the plastic part of the deformation gradient. Material descriptions for the considered two phased aggregates consisting in lattice hardening as well as isotropic hardening and kinematic hardening are suggested. Numerical simulations of various loading cases are presented to discuss and assess the performance of the suggested model.

  • The possibility to develop optoelectronic devices with improved properties by controlling the degree of organization at the molecular level of organic materials has been driving the design of new ${\pi}-conjugated$ systems. In particular, the organization by self-assembling processes (${\tilde{\Box}}{\d{\Box}}}$ interactions, hydrogen bonding) of well-defined oligomeric systems such as disubstituted oligothiophene derivatives has been demonstrated as a promising approach to conjugated materials with a high degree of structural order of the constituent building blocks. The self-organization of conjugated building blocks in solution or on surfaces, leading to the construction of nanoscopic and mesoscopic architectures, represents a starting point for the construction of molecular electronics or even circuits, through surface patterning with nanometer-sized objects.

Numerical simulations of various loading cases are presented to discuss and assess the performance of the suggested model. From the results of the numerical simulation, it is found that the suggested model represents the initial plastic anisotropy at least qualitatively well and that it has an improved representation of various characteristic hardening behaviors in comparison with conventional hardening descriptions where the precipitate structure is not reflected.

  • Eight under 2 micron size fractions of the montmorillonite from Jugjeonri area, Gyeongsanbug-do, were studied and then this result has been compared with data from Yongdongri area. Montmorillonites occurring at the same stratigraphic horizon in each area show limited variation in chemical composition, but shows some degree of differences in exchangeable cation compositions and total layer charges of montmorillonites from Jugjeonri to Yongdongri area. In general, samples from Jugjeonri show higher amount of exchangeable Na and layer charge due to relatively higher substitution of Mg for Al in octahedral sites than those from Yongdongri area. But Their dehydroxylation endothermic peaks of the samples from both areas are abnormal type with a small range of variation of peak temperature. This variation seems to reflect tetrahedral substitution of AI for Si for samples from Yongdongri whereas samples from Jugjeonri do not show shuch a tendency. However, samples from Jugjeonri proved to be relatively higher dehydroxylation peak temperatures than those of the other. DSC data for sample from Jugjeonri also show that divalent-cation saturated montmorillonite have relatively a higher endothermic heat capacities than monovalent-cation saturated one as shown in previous work. Two different morphologies of montmorillonites, honeycomb structure and closely packed intergrowth, by SEM were observed in samples from both areas but the later one is common. The scalloped type is relatively abundant in the sample from Yongdongri than the other. The dominant habit by TEM are irregularly shaped foliated aggregates and platy shaped particles. In general, foliated aggregates which are easy to disperse are relatively abundant in the samples from Jugjeon compared with those from Yongdongri area.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the developmental potential in vitro produced embryos frozen-thawed with the various containers, and also examined expression and localization of heat shock protein 70 at these embryos. For the vitrification, 2-cell, 8-cell and blastocyst stage embryos produced by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and nuclear transfer (NT) were exposed the ethylene glycol 5.5 M freezing solution (EC 5.5) for 30 sec, loaded on each containers such EM grid, straw and cryo-loop, and then immediately plunged into liquid nitrogen. Thawed embryos were serially diluted in sucrose solution, each for 1 min. and cultured in CRI-aa medium. Survival rates of the vitrification production were assessed by re-expanded, hatched blastocysts. There were no differences in the survival rates of IVF using EM grid and cryo-loop. However, survival rates by straw were relatively lower than other containers. The use of cryo-loop resulted in only survival of nuclear transferred embryos (43.7%). Also, there embryos after IVF or NT were analysed by semi-quantitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT- PCR) methods for hsp 70 mRNA expression. Results revealed the expression of hsp 70 mRNh were higher thawed embryos than control embryos. Immunocytochemistry used to localize the hsp 70 protein in embryos. Two and 8-cell embryos derived under control condition was evenly distributed in the cytoplasm but appeared as aggregates in some frozen-thawed embryos. However, in the control, blastocysts displayed aggregate signal while Hsp70 in frozen-thawed blastocysts appeared to be more uniform In distribution. Therefore, this result suggests that the exploiting Hsp 70 in the early embryos may be role for protection of stress condition for increase viability of embryos within IVF, NT and there frozen-thawed embryos.

  • The Discrete Element Method, DEM, is increasingly used in fracture studies of non-homogeneous continuous media, such as rock and concrete. A 2D circular rigid DEM formulation, developed to model concrete, has been adopted. A procedure developed to generate aggregate particles with a given aspect ratio and shape is presented. The aggregate particles are modelled with macroparticles formed by a group of circular particles that behave as a rigid body. Uniaxial tensile and compression tests performed with circular and non-circular aggregates, with a given aspect ratio, have shown similar values of fracture toughness when adopting uniform strength and elastic properties for all the contacts. Non-circular aggregate assemblies are shown to have higher fracture toughness when different strength and elastic properties are set for the matrix and for the aggregate/matrix contacts.

  • Fullerenes, $C_{60}$ and $C_{70}$, display interesting physicochemical properties in solutions, especially due to their unique chemical structures and their good electron accepting abilities. Solubility of fullerenes in different organic solvents and their unusual solvatochromic behavior, the ability of the fullerenes to form aggregates in solutions, and their electron transfer and charge transfer interactions with variety of electron donors, are the subjects of extensive research activities for more than one decade. Many research groups including ours have contributed substantially in the understanding of the solvatochromism, aggregation behavior, and the photoinduced electron transfer and charge transfer chemistry of fullerenes, in condensed phase. Present article is aimed to summarize the important results reported on the above aspects of fullerenes, subsequent to the earlier report from our group (D.K. Palit and J.P. Mittal, Full. • Uncertainty in concrete properties, including concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture, are predicted by developing a microstructural homogenization model. The homogenization model is developed by analyzing a concrete representative volume element (RVE) using the finite element (FE) method. The concrete RVE considers concrete as a three phase composite material including: cement paste, aggregate and interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The homogenization model allows for considering two sources of variability in concrete, randomly dispersed aggregates in the concrete matrix and uncertain mechanical properties of composite phases of concrete. Using the proposed homogenization technique, the uncertainty in concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture (described by numerical cumulative probability density function) are determined. Deflection uncertainty of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, propagated from uncertainties in concrete properties, is quantified using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Cracked plane frame analysis is used to account for tension stiffening in concrete. Concrete homogenization enables a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between concrete materials and structural modeling, which is necessary for realistic serviceability prediction.

  • The activity of immobilized cell-support particle aggregates is influenced by physical and biochemical elements, mass transfer, and physiology. Accordingly, the mathematical model discussed in this study is capable of predicting the steady state and transient concentration profiles of the cell mass and substrate, plus the effects of the substrate and product inhibition in an immobilized cell-support aggregate. The overall mathematical model is comprised of material balance equations for the cell mass, major carbon source, dissolved oxygen, and non-biomass products in a bulk suspension along with a single particle model. A smaller bead size and higher substrate concentration at the surface of the particle, resulted in a higher supply of the substrate into the aggregate and consequently a higher biocatalyst activity.

  • Biochar is a novel carbon based material derived from waste that shows promising properties for several applications. In this paper we investigate its potential use as a low cost, greener alternative to commonly used aggregates employed to enhance the neutron shielding performance of concrete. Monte Carlo simulations are performed with the PHITS code to estimate the neutron attenuation of blank and biochar-reinforced concrete exposed to high energy neutrons. We find that the shielding performance of concrete with 15% biochar is comparable with commonly used materials such as Boron Carbide at 20% and exceeds that of Basalt fibers with the same concentration, making these composites an interesting greener alternative to current solutions. A combination of biochar and heavier fillers also show extremely promising performance.
