  • Sobolev approximation can be adopted to a macroscopic supersonic motion comparatively larger than a random (thermal) one. It has recently been applied not only to the winds of hot early type stars, but also to envelopes of late type giants and/or supergiants. However, since the ratio of wind velocity to stochastic one is comparatively small in the winds of these stars, the condition for applying the Sobolev approximation is not fulfilled any more. Therefore the validity of the Sobolev approximation must be checked. We have calculated exact P Cygni profiles with various velocity ratios, $V_\infty/V_{sto}$, using the accelerated lambda iteration method, comparing with those obtained by the Sobolev approximation. While the velocity ratio decrease, serious deviations have been occured over the whole line profile. When the gradual increase in the velocity structure happens near the surface of star, the amount of deviations become more serious even at the high velocity ratios. The investigations have been applied to observed UV line profile of CIV in the Copernicus spectrums $of\;\zeta\;Puppis\;and\;NV\;of\;\tau\;Sco$. In case of $\tau$ Sco which has an expanding envelope with the gradual velocity increase in the inner region, The Sobolev approximation has given the serious deviations in the line profiles.

  • A new self-consistent mathematical model for semiconductor quantum well device was developed. The model was based on the direct solution of the Boltzmann transport equation, coupled to the Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The solution yielded the distribution function for a two-dimensional electron gas(2DEG) in quantum well devices. To solve the Boltzmann equation, it was transformed into a tractable form using a Legendre polynomial expansion. The Legendre expansion facilitated analytical evaluation of the collision integral, and allowed for a reduction of the dimensionality of the problem. The transformed Boltzmann equation was then discretized and solved using sparce matrix algebra. The overall system was solved by iteration between Poisson, Schrodinger and Boltzmann equations until convergence was attained.

  • This paper predicts the stall characteristics of three-dimensional wings. An iterative decambering approach is introduced into the nonplanar lifting surface method to take into consideration the stall characteristics of wings. An iterative decambering approach uses known airfoil lift curve and moment curve to predict the stall characteristics of wings. The multi-dimensional Newton iteration is used to take into consideration the coupling between the different sections of wings. Present results are compared with experiments and other numerical results. Computed results are in good agreement with other data. This scheme can be used for any wing with the twist or control surface and for wing-wing configurations such as wing-tail configuration or canard-wing configuration.

  • The Fighter aircraft transmission system consists of a light weight, High Speed Flexible Coupling (HSFC) known as Power Take-Off shaft (PTO) for connecting Engine gearbox (EGB) with Accessory Gear Box (AGB). The HSFC transmits the power through series of specially contoured metallic annular thin flexible plates whose planes are normal to the torque axis. The HSFC operates at high speed ranging from 10,000 to 18,000 rpm. The HSFC is also catered for accommodating larger lateral and axial misalignment resulting from differential thermal expansion of the aircraft engine and mounting arrangement. The contoured titanium alloy flexible plates are designed with a thin cross sectional profile to accommodate axial and parallel misalignment by the elastic material flexure. This paper investigates the effect of misalignment on the transmission characteristics of the HSFC couplings. A mathematical model for the HSFC coupling with misalignment has been developed for analyzing the torque transmission and force interaction characteristics. An extensive testing has been conducted for validating characteristics of the designed coupling under various misalignment conditions. With this the suitability of the model adapted for the design iteration of HSFC development is validated. This method will reduce the design iteration cycles of HSFC and can be extended for the similar development of flexible couplings.

  • In this paper, we propose a new affine shape adaptation scheme for the affine invariant feature detector, in which the convergence stability is still an opening problem. This paper examines the relation between the integration scale matrix of next iteration and the current second moment matrix and finds that the convergence stability of the method can be improved by adjusting the relation between the two matrices instead of keeping them always proportional as proposed by previous methods. By estimating and updating the shape of the integration kernel and differentiation kernel in each iteration based on the anisotropy of the current second moment matrix, we propose a coarse-to-fine affine shape adaptation scheme which is able to adjust the pace of convergence and enable the process to converge smoothly. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach obtains an improvement in convergence ratio and repeatability compared with the current schemes with relatively fixed integration kernel.

  • In this study, an iterative maximum a posteriori (MAP) approach using a Bayesian model of Markovrandom field (MRF) was proposed for despeckling images that contains speckle. Image process is assumed to combine the random fields associated with the observed intensity process and the image texture process respectively. The objective measure for determining the optimal restoration of this "double compound stochastic" image process is based on Bayes' theorem, and the MAP estimation employs the Point-Jacobian iteration to obtain the optimal solution. In the proposed algorithm, MRF is used to quantify the spatial interaction probabilistically, that is, to provide a type of prior information on the image texture and the neighbor window of any size is defined for contextual information on a local region. However, the window of a certain size would result in using wrong information for the estimation from adjacent regions with different characteristics at the pixels close to or on boundary. To overcome this problem, the new method is designed to use less information from more distant neighbors as the pixel is closer to boundary. It can reduce the possibility to involve the pixel values of adjacent region with different characteristics. The proximity to boundary is estimated using a non-uniformity measurement based on standard deviation of local region. The new scheme has been extensively evaluated using simulation data, and the experimental results show a considerable improvement in despeckling the images that contain speckle.

  • The problem of software bottle-neck may be arised from unbalance of demands and supply of software. This is caused from the fact that the capability of programmer could not be improved in software development. Therefor, the new method of software development should aim at improving the productivity of software. This paper presents the expressions to be the standardized software Program modules by means of the software chip. The expressions are consist of name, input, output, and iteration of each software chip. And they simple express a combination and separation in sequence, parallel, iteration, composition, mixing, and variety form. Therefore they can easily software reuse as a result of analyzing the flow of data clearly.

  • Scattering resonance of medium mass nuclides leads complex spectrum in the fast reactor, which requires thousands of energy groups in the spectrum calculation. When the broad-group cross sections are collapsed, reaction rate cannot be completely conserved. To eliminate the error from energy collapsing, the Super-homogenization method in energy collapsing (ESPH) was employed in the fast reactor code SARAX. An ESPH factor was derived based on the ESPH-corrected SN transport equation. By applying the factor in problems with reflective boundary condition, both the effective multiplication factor and reaction rate were conserved. The fixed-source iteration was used to ensure the stability of ESPH iteration. However, in the energy collapsing process of SARAX, the vacuum boundary condition was adopted, which was necessary for fast reactors with strong heterogeneity. To further reduce the error caused by leakage, an additional conservation factor was proposed to correct the neutron current in energy collapsing. To evaluate the performance of ESPH with conservation factor, numerical benchmarks of fast reactors were calculated. The results of broad-group calculation agreed well with the direct full-core Monte-Carlo calculation, including the effective multiplication factor, radial power distribution, total control rod worth and sodium void worth.

  • A real-time hybrid test of a 3 story-3 bay reinforced concrete frame which is divided into numerical and physical substructure models under uniaxial earthquake excitation was run using a fixed iteration implicit HHT time integration method. The first story inner non-ductile column was selected as the physical substructure model, and uniaxial earthquake excitation was applied to the numerical model until the specimen failed due to severe damage. A finite-element analysis program, Mercury, was newly developed and optimized for a real-time hybrid test. The drift ratio based on the top horizontal displacement of the physical substructure model was compared with the result of a numerical simulation by OpenSees and the result of a shaking table test. The experiment in this paper is one of the most complex real-time hybrid tests, and the description of the hardware, algorithm and models is presented in detail. If there is an improvement in the numerical model, the evaluation of the tangent stiffness matrix of the physical substructure model in the finite element analysis program and better software to reduce the computational time of the element state determination for the force-based beam-column element, then the comparison with the results of the real-time hybrid test and the shaking table test deserves to make a recommendation. In addition, for the goal of a "Numerical simulation of the complex structures under dynamic loading", the real time hybrid test has enough merit as an alternative to dynamic experiments of large and complex structures.

  • In this paper, we first review LDPC codes in general and a belief propagation algorithm that works in logarithm domain. LDPC codes, which is chosen 802.11n for wireless local access network(WLAN) standard, require a large number of computation due to large size of coded block and iteration. Therefore, we presented three kinds of low computational algorithms for LDPC codes. First, sequential decoding with partial group is proposed. It has the same H/W complexity, and fewer number of iterations are required with the same performance in comparison with conventional decoder algorithm. Secondly, we have apply early stop algorithm. This method reduces number of unnecessary iterations. Third, early detection method for reducing the computational complexity is proposed. Using a confidence criterion, some bit nodes and check node edges are detected early on during decoding. Through the simulation, we knew that the iteration number are reduced by half using subset algorithm and early stop algorithm is reduced more than one iteration and computational complexity of early detected method is about 30% offs in case of check node update, 94% offs in case of check node update compared to conventional scheme. The LDPC decoder have been implemented in Xilinx System Generator and targeted to a Xilinx Virtx5-xc5vlx155t FPGA. When three algorithms are used, amount of device is about 45% off and the decoding speed is about two times faster than convectional scheme.
