Issue ownership concerns a party's issue handling reputation. When a party is perceived to have the best solution for an issue, voters identify the party as the owner of the issue. Extant literature of issue ownership voting shows that voters tend to vote for a party that they identify as the owner of an issue they concern most. That is, the effect of issue ownership on voting is conditioned by the perceived salience of the issue in question. This study investigates another condition of issue ownership voting: i.e. party behavior in election campaigns. It argues that the effect of issue ownership on voting is conditional: it depends on party behavior as well as issue salience. During the campaign in the 2016 legislative election, only the Democratic Party of Korea, the opposition party at that time, actively presented itself as the owner of economic issues. The analysis results of this study show that the identification of the Democratic Party as the economic issue owner affects voting for the party when a voter thinks the economy to be the most important issue. However, the identification of the other parties as the economic issue owner does not affect voting for them under the same condition. The results support the argument that party behavior as well as issue salience are conditions of issue ownership voting.
The 2020 US Presidential Election was a highly-anticipated moment for our global society. During the election period, the most intriguing issue was who would be the winner-Trump or Biden? Among the possible main themes of the 2020 election, from the COVID-19 pandemic to racism, this study focused on feminism ('women') as a main component of Biden's victory. To explore the character of Biden's supporters, this paper focused on internet spaces as a source of public opinion. To guide the data analysis, this study employed four indices from empirical studies on Big Data analytics: issue salience, attention diversity, emotional mentioning, and semantic cohesion. The main finding of this study was that the representative keyword 'women' appeared more prevalently within content related to Biden than Trump, and the keyword pairs indicated that female voters were the main reason for Trump's failure but the root cause of Biden's victory. The results of this study indicated the role of the internet as a forum for public opinion and a fountain of political knowledge, which requires more rigorous investigation by researchers.
Purpose - Inducing consumers' behavioral intent to use an outlet shopping center is a critical issue for managers since it can be used as a guide for developing marketing strategies. Low prices could lead to a growth in retail purchases, but there might also be a positive relationship between prices and customer perceptions of product quality. The extent to which consumers use price as a predictor of quality may differ according to the availability of important alternative cues such as brand, store name, and identity salience triggered by the store. Consumers can obtain non-economic benefits from marketing exchanges that go beyond basic economic achievement. We argue that identity salience can play a crucial mediating role when consumers, acting as exchange partners, seek to obtain social benefits. This study shows that identity salience could mediate the relationship between identity salience-inducing factors such as multi-finality, prestige and role performance, and consumers' behavioral intent to use an outlet shopping center. Research design, data and methodology - The survey was conducted on college students enrolled in marketing classes. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed, of which only 194 were returned. After five incomplete questionnaires were excluded, a final sample of 189 was used for empirical analysis. Using a covariance structural analysis in Amos17, we confirmed the fit of the research model and estimated its parameters by using the maximum likelihood method. Results - The results of the hypotheses testing are as follows. First, both identity salience and economic benefits have positive effects on the behavioral intent to use an outlet shopping center. Second, role performance, prestige, and multi-finality have positive effects on identity salience. Finally, the additive analysis of the direct effects of identity salience-inducing factors shows that the role performance, prestige, and multi-finality factors have no direct effects on the behavioral intent to use an outlet shopping center, suggesting that identity salience plays a positive mediating role. Conclusions - This study informs marketers that not only price but shoppers' identity salience directly affects their intent to visit an outlet shopping center. To strengthen shoppers' identity salience, marketers should find ways to help shoppers fulfill their multiple social roles, realize their multiple goals, and achieve prestige. In other words, outlet shopping centers must improve their personal service environment in order to enhance their employees' service quality and assist the execution of multi-finality by minimizing the perceived costs (e.g., travel time, effort) associated with shopping trips, thus making it easier for consumers to combine visits to multiple stores in outlet shopping centers and buy the items required for their consumption goals. Outlet shopping centers must also offer assortments with both breadth and depth in order to help consumers play the social roles their social networks have given them.
The present study was designed to study the media consonance of campaign news coverage by comparing the issue salience provided by each medium. To explore the issue of consonance, this study examined the relationship of campaign agenda at intermedia and intramedia level. The data analysis revealed that there was general consensus in setting the campaign agenda at the intramedia and the intermedia level. On the other hand, the research focus indicated there was media difference in reporting the campaign agenda over time. In the perspective of agenda-setting function, the exposure to news media with greater uniformity might result in greater agenda-setting effects, since the media makes the issues salient by giving more media attention. After all, the uniformity of issue salience among news media might influence "what issues to think about," resulting in limiting the range of democratic discussion.

This study conducted a network analysis to determine how COVID-19 vaccine-related issue spread on Twitter during the introduction stage of the COVID-19. Issue diffusion tendency is analyzed according to the time period: phase 1 (initiation of vaccine introduction: March 7 - April 3, 2021), phase 2 (stagnant period of vaccination: April 4 - April 22, 2021), and phase 3 (increase of vaccination: April 23 - May 5, 2021). NodeXL was used for data collection and analysis. Daily Twitter network data were collected by entering search terms highly related to the COVID-19 vaccine. This study found that side effects-related opinions were repeatedly formed throughout the analysis period. As the vaccination rate increased and death cases were reported on media, death-related issues also emerged on Twitter. On the other hand, vaccine safety did not receive much attention on Twitter. The results of this study highlight the role of social media as a channel of issue diffusion when a national disaster strikes. We emphasize the need for the government to monitor public opinions on social media and reflect them in crisis communication strategies.
This study explores of press report on the death of Beongen Yoo based on network analysis and how issue diffuses via Internet and SNS in mainstream news and conservative channels of comprehensive programming. Issue salience, word's visibility and word's connectivity are the main keyword and analysis criteria of this study. Conservative channel of comprehensive programming focused on the surrounding information rather than core information compared to Mainstream media, Conservative channels of comprehensive media was interested in Yu, Beongeon, an article left, brand, rumor of a body and Mainstream media focused on the results of DNA test. Mainstream media covers this case as the discovery of the Yu, Beongeon body, Mainstream media reported as 'the discovery of the body frame, conservative channels of comprehensive programming reports as blame of investigation at the first stage. The former focuses on the cause of death and the latter focuses on the raising of strong doubts frame at the second stage. In case of the third stage the latter covered on the emphasis of the surrounding information. They frames the issue differently based on network analysis. The view point of conservative channel of comprehensive programming is diffused via SNS. This study highlights the role of journalist of mainstream media in the process of agenda-setting
When compared to land territorial claims, maritime claims have not attracted as much attention from the public as well as the academia. However, after the ICOW (Issue Correlates of War) data was published and was expanded to include maritime and river claims, there have been many quantitative studies that analyze maritime claims or separate different types of territorial claims to explain various mechanisms over different types of territorial claims. These quantitative studies have provided valuable explanations about the onset and the management of maritime claims. This research tries to review these quantitative research. Most studies about maritime claims, especially regarding the management of claims, analyze maritime claims based on two different levels of factors. First, from the perspective of systemic level, several studies focus on the role of international institutions and systemic level of democracy to explain the management of maritime claims. Second, at the dyadic level, many studies explain how the issue salience, past experience, the presence of resources, joint democracy, and relative power influence the occurrence of peaceful settlement attempts or conflictual behaviors over maritime claims. Based on the review of these literature, this research tries to identify several factors to explain the Dokdo issue and to encourage peaceful settlement attempts over the Dokdo issue.
This study compares the influence of perceived public opinion on Internet users' willingness to expression in real space with in cyber space. In real space, people who perceive their opinions as minority opinion are reluctant to express theirs publicly because of fear of isolation. But cyber space is the anonymous world. So we can expect that people express their opinions freely without the fear of isolation in this space. This study's results provide the support for our expectation. In cyber space, the minority perception group has as the high willingness to expression of their opinion about the abrogation of the Korean Family Rights Raw as the majority perception group. Both of in cyber space and in real space, it is the perception failure group that makes discrepancy in the willingness to expression. This group has the lowest willingness to expression in both space. However, the other predictors of willingness to expression in cyber space are similar to those in real space. Issue salience, Communication apprehension, and Age are the very significant predictors of willingness to expression in both spaces. Sex and ideology are significant predictors in real space, while the frequency of online conversation is the significant predictor in cyber space.
The purpose of this study was to examine the news attributes of the nuclear waste storage facility in Wido by conducting content analysis of two newspapers (Chosun Ilbo and Hangyoreh) and Ohmynews. Furthermore, this study measured the effects of news attributes on readers' attitude, opinion, and recognition of the event. The results of the content analysis indicated that all three newspapers focused on event-oriented coverage than issue-oriented one. Also, they only dealt with two issues-decision making process of the residents and rewards for residents-among a total of nine issues. That is, according to the hypothesis of the second-level agenda-setting theory, the media emphasize on a particular attribute while ignoring other attributes, which, in turn, make the particular attributes more salient. Based on the results of content analysis, this study conducted an experiment to measure the effects of media attributes on public recognition toward the attributes in terms of cognitive and of affective aspects. The results showed a significant relationship between media attributes and public attributes, which confirmed the effects of the second-level agenda setting. However, the transfer of attributes did not take place in affecting public opinion and public recognition of the event itself.
Virtual community(VC) will increasingly be organized as commercial enterprises, with the objective of earning an attractive financial return by providing members with valuable resources and environment. For example, Cyworld.com in Korea uses several community services to enable customers of Cyworld to take control of their own value as potential purchasers of products and services. Although initial adoption is important for online network service success, it does not necessarily result in the desired managerial performance unless the initial usage is continuously related to the continuous usage and purchase. Particularly, the customer who receives relevant online services and is well equipped with online network services, will trust the online service provider and perceive less risk and experience more activities such as continuous usage and purchase. Thus, how to promote continued online service usage or, alternatively, how to prevent discontinuance is a critical issue for VC service providers to consider. By aggregating a wide range of information and online environments for customers and providing trust to its members, the service providers of virtual communities help to reduce the perceived risk of continuous usage and purchase. Drill down, online service managers realize that achieving strong and sustained customers who continuously use online service and purchase on it is crucial. Therefore, the research into this online service continuance will identify the relationship between the initial usage and the continuous usage and purchase. The research of continuous usage or post adoption has recently emerged as an important issue in the IS literature. Individuals' information systems(IS) continuous usage decisions are congruent with consumers' repeat purchase decisions. The TAM(Technology Acceptance Model) paradigm has been strongly confirmed across a wide range from product purchase on EC to online service usage contexts. The analysis of IS usage based on TAM has proven to be successful across almost online service contexts. However, most of previous studies have focused on only an area (i.e., VC or EC). Just little research has tried to analyze the relationship between VC and EC. The effect of some factors on user intention, captured through several theories such as TAM, has been demonstrated. Yet, few studies have explored the salient relationships of VC users' EC acceptance. To fill this gap between VC and EC research, this paper attempts to develop a research model that extends the TAM perspective in view of the additional contributions of trust in the service provider and trust in members on some factors that affect EC and VC adoption. In this extension, we applied the TAM-to-TAM(T2T) model, and analyzed the transfer effect of trust between these two TAMs. The research model was empirically tested on the context of a social network service. The model was to extend TAM with the trust concept for the virtual community environment from the perspective of tasks. By building an extended model of TAM and examining the relationships between trust and the existing variables of TAM, it is aimed to explain a user's continuous intention to use VC and purchase on EC. The unit of analysis in this paper is an individual user of a virtual community. The population of interest is the individual with the experiences in virtual community. The data for this paper was made available via a Web survey of VC users. In total, 281 cases were gathered for about one week, but there were some missing values in the sample and there were some inappropriate cases. Thus, only 248 cases were finally analyzed. We chose the structural equation analysis to test the hypotheses and it is better suited for explaining complex relationships than the other methods. In this test, AMOS was used to test the Structural Equation Model (SEM). Noticeable results have been found in the T2T model regarding the factors affecting the intention to use of virtual community and loyalty. Our result showed that trust transfer plays a key role in forming the two adoption beliefs. Overall, this study preliminarily confirms the salience of trust transfer in online service.
