Quine, Wyman, and Buridan: Three Approaches to Ontological Commitment

  • This paper provides a comparison of three fundamentally different approaches to the issue of ontological commitment. It argues that despite superficial similarities on either side, Buridan's approach provides an intriguing third alternative to the two commonly recognized modern approaches.

The Impact of Participative Leadership on Job Commitment of Employees: The Mediating Effect of Psychological Empowerment and The Moderating Effect of Issue Leadership (참여적 리더십이 구성원의 직무몰입에 미치는 영향: 심리적 임파워먼트의 매개효과와 이슈리더십의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of participative leadership on the job commitment of employees and to investigate the mediating effect of psychological empowerment and the moderating effect of issue leadership. A survey was conducted on employees working in various industries and analyzed using PROCESS macro (Hayes, 2013). The reliability and validity of measurement tools were reviewed through a preliminary survey, and the timing of measurement of independent variable and dependent variable was separated to overcome the common method bias. The results of the study are as follows. First, it has been confirmed that participative leadership has a positive influence on employee's job commitment. Second, participative leadership strengthened the psychological empowerment of employees, and through it, the indirect effect of improving the employee's job commitment was confirmed. Third, the moderating effect of issue leadership was confirmed in the relationship between participative leadership and psychological empowerment. Fourth, the moderated mediating effect was confirmed that the effect of participative leadership on job commitment through psychological empowerment is reinforced by issue leadership. This study contributes to the expansion of existing leadership research by empirically identifying the mechanism between participative leadership and employee's job commitment. Implications regarding the results of the study, limitations of the study, and future study tasks were discussed.

A study on antecedents and consequents of relationship commitment toward internet sites and between customers in virtual environment (가상환경에서 대고객 및 고객간 관계결속(Relationship Commitment)의 선행변수와 결과변수에 대한 연구)

  • This study investigates "commitment" , which is the crucial variable in the study of relationship marketing, because I pay attention to the importance of relationship marketing toward consumers in virtual environment. This dissertation whose main issue is about virtual environment focuses on "commitment" from two perspectives. One is customers′ relationship commitment toward enterprises or corporations through internet sites and the other is relationship commitment between customers. The main purpose is to verify antecedents and consequents which influence relationship commitment toward internet sites (corporations or enterprises) and between customers. The hypotheses are that (1) share values and relationship benefit from internet sites affect relationship commitment toward internet sites (2) share values and interactions between customers affect relationship commitment between customers (3) interactions with relationship commitments toward internet sites and between customers exist (4) these relationship commitments affect future intentions. The subjects are university students who I think get used to using internet. The results indicate that (1) antecedents of relationship commitment toward internet sites and between customers are significantly influential (2) relationship commitment toward internet sites influences relationship commitment between customers, but the effect of relationship commitment between customers on relationship commitment toward internet sites is not significant (3) relationship commitment between customers influences future intentions, but the effect of relationship commitment toward internet sites on future intentions is not significant.

Client Relationship Proneness, Trust, Commitment and Reuse Intention in IT Services (고객 관계 경향, 신뢰, 몰입 그리고 재사용 의도: IT서비스의 경우)

  • It has become a crucial issue for IT service firms how to form positive relationships with their customers in order to retain existing customers and potential customers. To address this issue, many researchers have introduced the concept of consumer relationship proneness(CRP). This present study examines if CRP is related to trust and commitment that enhance the intention to reuse. Using PLS, we analyzed 200 data collected through a survey of global electronic company members experienced IT outsourcing services. As a result, CRP has a defined impact on both trust and commitment, and relationships between trust and commitment, commitment and reuse intention have a positive effect. On the other hand, trust does not affect reuse intention. Based on these results, it presents a discussion for future research and the implications for CRP.

The Effects Manufacturing Company's Leader-Member Exchange on Employee's Job Commitment and Safety Behavior (제조업체에서 상사-구성원 교환관계가 부하직원의 직무몰입과 안전행동에 미치는 영향)

  • In manufacturing company, safety is a important issue because it can cause many cost and problems of company. So reduce safety accident can increase manufacturing company's productivity. Safety accident has close relationship with employee's behavior, which is 'safety behavior'. In this study, researcher try to find out role of leader-member exchange and employee's job commitment effect on safety behavior in manufacturing company. A total of 279 responses were collected from manufacturing company's employees. The result of this empirical study show us that leader-member exchange has positive effect on employee's job commitment and safety behaviot. And job commitment has positive effect on safety behavior. Base on this empirical result, researcher provide critics and manageric implication for manufacturing companies.

  • Information technology enables home-based working which is a new way to satisfy the firm and its employees. Firms are under pressure of cost reduction, and employees want to maintain balance of life between work and family. Considering the organization's capability can be the core competency, firm's efforts to acquire workers' commitment have been important issue in human resource management. However, researches to increase the workers' loyalty and commitment within home-base working have not been widely studied. This study tries to identify the relationships among firms' rewards supporting strategies and workers' perceived commitment with the working system as a context. Results confirm that the organization's extrinsic and intrinsic rewards affect the worker's continuous commitment, and the mediating role of normative commitment between workers' perceived affective commitment and continuous commitment has been found. Also, we empirically identify the moderating role of working systems(i.e., home-based, vs. office-based) within organization's rewards supporting strategies and workers' commitment perceptions.

  • As the Internet establishes and reinforces connections between people, virtual community is becoming one of considerable business model. We believe that benefits of the virtual community go to both customer and vendor organizing virtual community. Despite the explosive growth of virtual communities on the Internet, empirical research has been focused to study the issues related to characteristics of virtual community The objective of this study is to enhance the understanding about virtual communities as an e-business model by Customer Relation Management and by empirically validating their effect on the performance of website. Through path analysis, we find support for relations behavior influence the online commitment. we also find that the online commitment enhance the organization citizenship behavior. Finally, we discuss several theoretical and practical Implications, and suggest limitations for research and future research issue.

  • The paper analyzes the effect of expected future demand on the investment decisions of multinational enterprises. In particular, I explore the issue of the timing of switching between exporting and FDI in the host developing country and explicitly incorporate the firm's attitude toward risk in the model. The model demonstrates that the optimal time for switching to FDI depends on the expected future demand and the degree of its uncertainty.

An Effect of the Valence of Best Reply on the Conformity of General Reply (베스트 댓글의 방향성이 일반댓글의 동조효과에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effect of valence for best reply on the conformity of general reply in online environment. A total of 194 participants participated in this study, each participant assigned randomly in three experimental groups(positive, negative, and control). Participants were asked to read online news article, best reply and general 6 replies, and then, to write their own opinions in the reply section. In addition, the level of self-expression and issue commitment were measured. The contents of reply participants written was categorized three valence(positive, negative, and neutral) by the four experimenters' judgment. The mean of inter-rater reliability was 84.9%. The results indicated that the level of self-expression and issue commitment were comparable across experimental conditions. However, the result of cross-table analysis showed that there is a significant difference in the valence of general reply across experimental conditions. Specifically, there were significant difference in the valence of general reply between positive and negative experimental group and positive and control group, but there is no significant difference between negative and control group.

The Effect of Trust and Justice on Relation Satisfaction and Long-term Commitment in Franchise Business (가맹본부에 대한 신뢰와 공정성이 관계만족과 장기적 결속에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose - This study examines the adverse press coverage that has increased in proportion to the remarkable growth of various kinds of franchise businesses in the food service industry. Today, the trust of franchisees in relation to their franchisor, and the maintenance of good relations between the two, has become a significant social issue. This study investigates relationship satisfaction and the long-term commitment between the franchisor and franchisee. Research design, data, methodology - We used a path analysis to investigate the relationship between justice and trust, trust and relationship satisfaction, justice and relationship satisfaction, trust and long-term commitment, and relationship satisfaction and long-term commitment. Structural Equation Modeling and a Sobel test were used to investigate the mediating effects of trust and relationship satisfaction. Data were collected from 237 Food Franchisees in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province in order to test the theoretical model and its hypotheses. Two research methodologies are generally used in the distribution management field. For this study, an empirical method was used. Results - A causal analysis was carried out to test if the research model has a sufficient fit index (for instance, χ2 = 46.694, df = 10, p = .000, GFI = 0.946, AGFI = 0.850, RMR = 0.034, NFI = 0.966, CFI = 0.973), and the results showed that the model was sufficient, thus demonstrating the suitability of the research model. Each hypothesis had a positive influence, both on long-term commitment and relationship satisfaction. Justice with the franchisor had a positive influence on trust. Relation satisfaction cognized by franchisees was found to positively influence long-term commitment. The franchisee perception of justice in relation to the franchisor had no significant influence on long-term commitment. The study investigated the hypothesis that trust could mediate justice and long-term commitment, and that relationship satisfaction could also mediate long-term commitment Both trust and relationship satisfaction were found to be important for long-term commitment. Specifically, trust sub-factors and justice sub-factors influenced long-term commitment. Identification-based and knowledge-based trust were more important than calculus-based trust. Distributive justice was deemed more important than procedural justice; distributive justice should thus be strengthened. Conclusions - Both franchisor and franchisee were independent businesses. Evidently however, the franchisor could not ensure profit without long-term commitment from the franchisee. As for the success of the franchise business, the franchisor should carry out appropriate strategies leading to a satisfactory relationship. For example, transparency makes it possible to maintain and enhance trust and to improve relationship satisfaction. Just relations between franchisor and franchisee should make it possible to maintain and enhance the franchisee's trust. The franchisor should provide a variety of information with respect to the franchisee's business success. Finally, in order to improve the franchisee's long-term commitment, the franchisor should ensure a just approach with trust and relationship satisfaction among their strategies.
