In this study, oxidation of As (III) as well as removal of total arsenic by adsorbents coated with single oxides or multi-oxides (Fe (III), Mn (IV), Al (III)) was investigated. In addition, multi-functional properties of adsorbents coated with multi-oxides were evaluated. Finally, application of activated carbon impregnated with Fe or Mn-oxides on the treatment of As (III) or As (V) was studied. As (V) adsorption results with adsorbents containing Fe and Al shows that adsorbents containing Fe show a greater removal of As (V) at pH 4 than at pH 7. In contrast adsorbents containing Al shows a favorable removal of As (V) at pH 7 than at pH 4. In case of iron sand, it has a negligible adsorption capacity for As (V) although it contains 217.9 g-Fe/kg-adsorbent, Oxidation result shows that manganese coated sand (MCS) has the greatest As (III) oxidation capacity among all metal oxides at pH 4. Oxidation efficiency of As (III) by IMCS (iron and manganese coated sand) was less than that by MCS. However the total removed amount of arsenic by IMCS was greater than that by MCS.

Thallium and its compounds are a class of highly toxic chemicals that cause wide-ranging symptoms such as gastrointestinal disturbances; polyneuritis; encephalopathy; tachycardia; skin eruptions; hepatic, renal, cardiac, and neurological toxicities; and have mutagenic and genotoxic effects. The present research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the chelating agents deferasirox (DFX) and deferiprone (L1) in reducing serum and tissue thallium levels after the administration of thallium (III), according to two different dosing regimens, to several groups of Wistar rats for 60 days. It was hypothesized that the two chelators might be more efficient as a combined therapy than as monotherapies in removing thallium (III) from the rats' organs. The chelators were administered orally as either single or combined therapies for a period of 14 days. Serum and tissue thallium (III) and iron concentrations were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Serum and tissue thallium (III) levels were significantly reduced by combined therapy with DFX and L1. Additionally, iron concentrations returned to normal levels and symptoms of toxicity decreased.
The papers in preserved books and archives experience aging which was affected by a variety of factors. Thus, the studies concerning impacts of those factors on paper aging are required. In this research, a simulation of a short-time accelerated paper aging was conducted in order to examine the effects of acid and metals (alum, copper (II) sulfate, copper (II) chloride, and iron (III) chloride) on the natural paper aging for a long time. As a result of experiments, it is found that both acid and metals have impacts on paper aging. Alum resulted in the significant decrease of pH, brightness, folding endurance, and viscosity of paper. Both copper (II) chloride and iron (III) chloride also resulted in the decrease of brightness, folding endurance, and viscosity of paper. In more detail, paper aging by iron (III) chloride showed much more significant than that by copper (II) chloride. The paper aging in case of copper (II) sulfate coexisting sulfate ion, where metal absorbed moisture was higher than in case of paper treated only by alum. This result indicated that metal catalyzes paper aging by acid. Based on these results, it was revealed that both alum and metal are the major factors in paper aging. In particular, paper aging was far more accelerated in case when acid and metals existed in paper at the same time.
The bacterial uranium(VI) reduction and its resultant low solubility make this process an attractive option for removing U from groundwater. An impact of aqueous suspending iron phase, which is redox sensitive and ubiquitous in subsurface groundwater, on the U(VI) bioreduction by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 was investigated. In our batch experiment, the U(VI) concentration ($5{\times}10^5M$) gradually decreased to a non-detectable level during the microbial respiration. However, when Fe(III) phase was suspended in solution, bioreduction of U(VI) was significantly suppressed due to a preferred reduction of Fe(III) instead of U(VI). This shows that the suspending amorphous Fe(III) phase can be a strong inhibitor to the U(VI) bioreduction. On the contrary, when iron was present as a soluble Fe(II) in the solution, the U(VI) removal was largely enhanced. The microbially-catalyzed U(VI) reduction resulted in an accumulation of solid-type U particles in and around the cells. Electron elemental investigations for the precipitates show that some background cations such as Ca and P were favorably coprecipitated with U. This implies that aqueous U tends to be stabilized by complexing with Ca or P ions, which easily diffuse and coprecipitate with U in and around the microbial cell.
In order to compare the iron concentrations of the marketed ferruginous hematinics with the sustained-releasedosage forms and to prepare the good hemantinic which can be absorbed effectively without forming "iron block" in the gastrointestinal tract, gelatinized micropellets containing medicament were prepared and hardened in 10% formalin-isopropanol in the time of 72 hours. These micropellets were digested with artificial gastric juice and plotted a curve of released iron concentration. As a result, it is found that gelatinized micropellets sustained-release dosage form is an excellent ferruginous hemantinic and it is shown that several marketed preparations can be improved in their hemantinic actions by forming the sustained-release dosage.se dosage.
In this study, PEDOT thin films polymerized with Iron(III)tosylate ($Fe(PTS)_3$) and grown on acetic acid-catalyzed 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (APS-SAM) surfaces by VPP method have been investigated. PEDOT thin films were synthesized on APS self-assembled $SiO_2$ wafer surface at two different concentrations (20 wt% and 40 wt%) and growth time (3 and 30 minutes), and then they were compared. PEDOT vapour phase-polymerized with 40 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ oxidant completely formed a thin film on acetic acid-catalyzed APS-SAM surface while with 20 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ did not at all. It means that the oxidant can be uniformly coated on acetic acid-catalyzed APS-SAM surface at the 40 wt% concentration, which gives rise to the uniform growth of PEDOT thin film on it.
In this study, PEDOT thin films polymerized with Iron(III)tosylate ($Fe(PTS)_3$) and grown on atomically smooth and highly dense 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane self-assembled monolayer (APS-SAM) surfaces by VPP method have been investigated. PEDOT thin films were synthesized on APS self-assembled $SiO_2$ wafer surface at two different concentrations (20 wt% and 40 wt%) and growth time (3 and 30 minutes), and then their sheet resistance were measured and compared. PEDOT thin films grown with 20 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ oxidant are highly conductive when compared with the film grown with 40 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$, as ascertained by the measured sheet resistance values down to 0.06 ${\Omega}/cm$. It clearly suggests that 20 wt% is more effective oxidant concentration for VPP than 40 wt% even though the film grown with 40 wt% oxidant has better quality than the film with 20 wt% $Fe(PTS)_3$ does.
The carbon nanofibers (CNFs) used in this study were synthesized with an iron catalyst and ethylene as a carbon source. A concentration of 30 wt % iron(III) acetylacetonate was dissolved in resol type phenol resin and polyurethane foam was put into the solution. The sample was calendered after being cured at $80^{\circ}C$ in air for 24 h. Stabilization and carbonization of the resol type phenol resin and reduction of the $Fe^{3+}$ were completed in a high-temperature furnace by the following steps: 1) heating to $600^{\circ}C$ at a rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$ with a mixture of $H_2/N_2$ for 4 h to reduce the $Fe^{3+}$ to Fe; 2) heating to $1000^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ at a rate $10^{\circ}C/min$ for 30 minutes for pyrolysis; 3) synthesizing CNFs in a mixture of 20.1% ethylene and $H_2/N_2$ at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using a CVD process. Finally, the structural characterization of the CNFs was performed by scanning electron microscopy and a synthesis analysis was carried out using energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Specific surface area analysis of the CNFs was also performed by $N_2$-sorption.
As part of our attempt to discover novel active compounds against multi-drug resistant pathogens, we hereby report two new complexes of iron(III) with formulae: [Fe(L1)2(H2O)2]Cl3 and [Fe(L1)2(L2)(H2O)]Cl2 where L1 = 1,10-phenanthroline (C12H8N2) and L2 = guanide (C5H4N5O-). The synthesized complexes were characterized using spectroscopic analysis (ESI-MS, ICP-OES, FT-IR, and UV-Vis), cyclic voltammetry, CHN analysis, gravimetric chloride determination, melting point determination, and conductance measurement. Octahedral geometries are assigned to both complexes. In vitro antibacterial activity was tested on two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus epidermidis) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The complexes demonstrated appreciable activity against these pathogens. Interestingly, the [Fe(L1)2(L2)(H2O)]Cl2 complex manifested a higher degree of inhibition against the drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria than the commercially available drug, namely erythromycin.
