The Diagnosis of the iris according to the iris constitution-Centered on skin area (홍채 체질에 따른 홍채 진단-피부 영역을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate whether there is a difference in the incidence of the black circle border of iris(skin disease) according to the iris constitution. Iris was taken for 100 adults living in Seoul. Iris was photographed using the iris camera DV-2H, a blue focus development product. Statistical significance was tested by correlation analysis, and the occurrence of black circle border of iris was low negative correlation(p<0.01). As mentioned above, we know that the occurrence of black circle border of iris differs according to the iris constitution, and by using it actively, it will help health promotion about skin. There is a need to study the changes of iris in the cause of skin disease by using a blood test to analyze the cause of the skin disease in the future.

  • In acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) due to Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection is one of the most difficult IRIS types to manage. We report an unusual case of MAC-associated IRIS. At first the patient was diagnosed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection after he was admitted with pneumocystis pneumonia. After starting antiretroviral therapy he presented unmasked IRIS with MAC infection. Next, he was hospitalized with continuous loose stools and new-onset fever. Investigation included computed tomography (CT), which showed homogeneous enhancement and enlargement of the lymph nodes (LN), elevation of ferritin (>1,650 ng/mL) and lactate dehydrogenase (306 IU/L) levels, and F- fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) scan, which showed increased FDG uptake. These findings were highly indicative of lymphoma. We performed laparoscopic biopsy of the mesenteric LN, and the biopsy culture grew MAC. So we made a diagnosis of MAC-associated. Therefore, IRIS must be considered as a possible diagnosis when AIDS patients develop new symptoms or exhibit exacerbations of existing symptoms. Furthermore the biopsies should be conducted.

Development of an Optical System for Iris Photographing (홍채 촬영용 광학계 개발)

  • We tried to design and manufacture an iris photographing optical-system which is used in the Oriental medicine or medical diagnostics. The whole system consists of a light source part, an image focusing part, a CCD transfer part and a diagnosis S/W. We designed the image focusing part to the reduction optical-system with 0.58X magnification of which the chromatic aberration is removed by using materials of FD60 and BACD5. The image focusing part's localization did big contribution in coot reduction of products. The manufactured iris photographing optical-system had superior performance in aspect that has stereoscopic effects of images in comparison with the foreigner's.

The Convergence Correlation between Stress and stress-ring through Iris Analysis (홍채 분석을 통한 스트레스링과 스트레스의 융합적 상관관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between stress and stress-ring through iris analysis of the subjects from random selection of 150 adults living in G. The study was performed from March 2014 to October 2014, through iris photography and self-filling questionnaires. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the SPSS ver. 20.0 program. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the stress-ring according to the subjects' age and occupation(p<.05). In addition, the correlation between stress-ring and stress was observed through the iris analysis(r=.709, p<.001). Based on the results of this study, iris analysis in clinical setting is thought to prove beneficial for preventative treatment through stress prediction and early diagnosis.

A Novel Circle Detection Algorithm for Iris Segmentation (홍채 영역 분할을 위한 새로운 원 검출 알고리즘)

  • There is a variety of researches about recognition system using biometric data these days. In this study, we propose a new algorithm, uses simultaneous equation that made of the edge of objects, to segment an iris region without threshold values from an anterior eye image. The algorithm attempts to find a center area through calculated outskirts information of an iris, and decides the area where the most points are accumulated. To verify the proposed algorithm, we conducted comparative experiments to Hough transform and Daugman's method, based on 50 images anterior eye images. It was found that proposed algorithm is 5 and 75 times faster than on each algorithm, and showed high accuracy of detecting a center point (95.36%) more than Hough transform (92.43%). In foreseeable future, this study is expected to useful application in diverse department of human's life, such as, identification system using an iris, diagnosis a disease using an anterior image.

A Case Report of Hyperhidrosis with Sympathicotonia Detected by Iris Diagnosis (홍채로 진단한 교감항진 국소다한증 치험례)

  • Objective: The aim of this case study was to describe a case of iris diagnosis of primary hyperhidrosis and the use of Korean medicine. Methods: A patient with symptoms of hyperhidrosis was diagnosed as having Taeeumin after assessment using the four basic Korean diagnostic methods. Iris diagnosis was used for further examination. The images obtained showed a remarkably defined collarette and increased nerve rings, which suggested an overactive sympathetic nerve system. Under the diagnosis of Taeeum, a Korean herbal medicine was prescribed with additional herbs to help alleviate the hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Results: The patient had been receiving treatment for hyperhidrosis for >30 years, with various medical attempts to relieve her symptoms, which were ineffective. She showed signs of improvement from day 4 into the treatment, and 80% of her symptoms were improved after completing a 6-week treatment course. Conclusion: The herbal medicine prescribed to the patient proved effective for reducing her chronic symptoms that had been unresponsive to previous medical treatments.

  • lridology, a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), is the diagnosis of medical conditions through noting irregularities of the pigmentation in the iris. lridological constitution has a strong familial aggregation and is implicated in heredity. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene polymorphism is one of the most well studied genetic markers of vascular disease. I investigated the relationship between iridological constitution and apoE polymorphism. I classified 87 hypertensive patients with family history of cerebral infarction and 79 controls according to iris constitution, and determined apoE genotype. Neurogenic type in hypertensives was 32.2% compared with 16.5% in controls (P<0.001). No differences in the apoE genotypes frequencies were observed in patients compared with those in controls ($x^2=0.726$, df-=2, P=0.696). However, in a population with ${\varepsilon}3/{\varepsilon}4$ genotype, the frequency of neurogenic constitution was significantly higher in hypertensives than in controls (60% vs. 0%) ($x^2=5.265$, df=l, P=0.022). These results could imply that apoE ${\varepsilon}3/{\varepsilon}4$ genotype and neurogenic iris constitution are risk factors for hypertension.

  • The Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by dental and ocular abnormalities. The essential ocular features include partial or complete bilateral hypoplasia of the iris stroma, abnormalities of the angle structures with congenital iris adhesions, and anterior displacement of Schwalbe's corpuscles. Common oral findings are hypodontia(especially in anterior maxillary segment), microdontia, misshaped teeth, delayed eruption of the teeth. Additionally, other systemic symptoms can be seen and early detection by the pedodontist through dental diagnosis should prevent visual impairment.

  • This study aims at designing and evaluating light source devices that can stably generate light with various wavelengths in order to make possible PDD using a photosensitizer and diagnosis using auto-fluorescence. The light source was a Xenon lamp and filter wheel, composed of an optical output control through Iris and filters with several wavelength bands. It also makes the inducement of auto-fluorescence possible because it is designed to generate a wavelength band of 380-420nm, 430-480nm, and 480-560nm. The transmission part of the light source was developed to enhance the efficiency of light transmission. To evaluate this light source, the characteristics of light output and wavelength band were verified. To validate the capability of this device as PDD, the detection of auto-fluorescence using mouse models was performed.

  • Photodynamic diagnosis(PDD) is a method to diagnose the possibility of cancer, both by the principle that if a photosensitizer is injected into an organic tissue, it is accumulated in the tissue of a malignant tumor selectively after a specific period, and by a comparison of the intensity of the fluorescence of normal tissue with abnormal tissue after investigating the excitation light of a tissue with accumulated photosensitizer. Since the selection of the wavelength band of excitation light has an interrelation with fluorescence generation according to the selection of a photosencitizer, it plays an important role in POD.
