  • Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a bioelectrochemical system where electrochemically active bacteria convert organic waste into electricity. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) are polymers that have been studied as potential alternative ion exchange membranes to Nafion for many electrochemical systems. This study examined the optimal mixing ratio of PVA and chitosan CS in a PVA:CS composite membrane for MFC applications. PVA:CS composite membranes with 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1 ratios were synthesized and tested. The water uptake and ion exchange capacity, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and scanning electron microscopy images were analyzed to determine the physicochemical properties of PVA:CS membranes. The prepared membranes were applied to the ion exchange membrane of the MFC system, and their effects on the electrochemical performance were evaluated. These results showed that the composite membrane with a 3:1 (PVA:CS) ratio showed comparable performance to the commercialized Nafion membrane and produced more electricity than the other synthesized membranes. The PVA:CS membrane implemented MFCs produced a maximum power density of 0.026 mW cm-2 from organic waste with stable performance. Therefore, it can be applied to a cost-effective MFC system.

  • We investigated the electrochemical behavior of an electrode coated with a nickel hexacyanoferrate/graphene oxide (NiPB/GO) composite to evaluate its potential use for the electrochemical separation of radioactive Cs as a promising approach for reducing secondary Cs waste after decontamination. The NiPB/GO-modified electrode showed electrochemically switched ion exchange capability with excellent selectivity for Cs over other alkali metals. Furthermore, the repetitive ion insertion and desertion test for assessing the electrode stability showed that the electrochemical ion exchange capacity of the NiPB/GO-modified electrode increased further with potential cycling in 1 M of $NaNO_3$. In particular, this electrochemical treatment enhanced Cs uptake by nearly two times compared to that of NiPB/GO and still retained the ion selectivity of NiPB, suggesting that the electrochemically treated NiPB/GO composite shows promise for nuclear wastewater treatment.

  • The effect of a rapid freeze pretreatment of organic ion exchange resins on their grinding properties was studied. It was found that the structure of ion exchange resins was defected by freezing pressure formed in the process of rapid freezing. The defected resins didn't recover their own structure after thawing and those could be easy to be broken at room temperature by small force. Therefore, organic ion exchange resins could be ground readily at room temperature after rapid-freezing the fully swelled resins using by solid carbon dioxide, or liquid nitrogen. The rapid freeze pretreatment of cation exchange resins was very effective on grinding in particular. However, the effect of the pretreatment of anion exchange resins on grinding was less than that of cation exchange resins. In case of anion exchange resins, the ionic form of affected the grindability remarkably.

  • On the basis of 200 ppm of Ag and 120 l/h of feed flow rate, we built a pilot plant of an ion exchange fiber system having an double tube type ion exchange chamber with strong base ion exchange fiber (FIVAN A-6) which was designed to replace fibers easily and to eliminate the need for a fixture. The following results were obtained for the double tube type of ion exchange fiber system with an ion exchange capacity of 4.6 meq/g for Ag. The adsorption process was operated in the range of 40~90 l/h after confirming the effect of the flow rate and, pH did not affect formation of complex ion of Ag in the range of pH 7~12. In the case of backwash process, the recovery rate of Ag was tested in the range of 60~120 l/h and comparative experiments were carried out using NaOH, $NH_4Cl$, and NaCl as the chemicals for backwash. Although the desorption time was shortened at higher concentration, the desorption efficiency per mol was lowered. Therefore, it was confirmed that the desorption time and the concentration should be well balanced to operate economically. The desorption pattern of the backwash process is slower than the adsorption process and takes a lot of time. The results showed that the Ag adsorption ratio was 99.5% or more and the Ag recovery ratio was 96% or more, and commercialization was possible.

  • To extract arabinogalactan from larch (Larix Leptolepis), chips immersed with water(20-$90^{\circ}C$) for 1hr, were defiberized by refiner. The liquors were recovered and purified to pure arabinogalactan by ion exchange resin(IRC-50 a. IR-45) or MgO. Additionally the optimal condition in purification with MgO was also investigated. 1. The amounts of solids(crude sugars) and pure arabinogalctan in solids are 8.6-11.3% and 7.3-8.5%(raw material = 100), respectively. 2. Phenolic materials in crude sugars are removed up to 96-89% by ion exchange resin and 94-88% by MgO, while recovery yields of pure arabinogalactan are 81-75% on purification with ion exchange resin and 91-87% on purification with MgO. 3. The optimal conditions of purification with MgO are the addition of 35mg MgO/0.5g of crude sugars, 45 minutes at $70^{\circ}C$, or 25 mg MgO, 30 minutes at $85^{\circ}C$.

  • Electrodeionization (EDI), which combines electrodialysis (ED) and conventional ion-exchange (IX), is a mature process which has been applied since more than twenty years on commercial use for the production of ultrapure water (UPW). Eliminating chemical regeneration is the main reason for its commercial success. The increase in acceptance of EDI technology has led to an installation of very large plant as the commercial state of the art that produces $1,500m^3/h$ of water for high pressure steam boiler. More recently, EDI system has found a number of new interesting applications in wastewater treatment, biotechnology industry, and other potential field. Along with further growth and wider applications, the development of stack construction and configuration are also become a concern. In this paper, the principle of EDI process is described and its recent developments, commercial scale, and various applications are pointed out.

  • The leaching of nitrate from soil increases the concentration of elements, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, in water, causing eutrophication. In this study, the feasibility of using clinoptilolite as an ion-exchange material to reduce nitrate leaching in soil was investigated. Soil samples were collected from three soil depths (0 - 30, 30 - 90, and 90 - 120 cm), and their sorption capacity was determined using batch experiments. The effects of contact time, initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and temperature on the removal of NO3- were investigated. The results showed that an initial concentration of 25 mg L-1, a contact time of 120 min, an adsorbent dosage of 5.0 g/100 mL, a pH of 3, and a temperature of 30 ℃ are favorable conditions. The kinetic results corresponded well with a pseudo-second-order rate equation. Intra-particle diffusion also played a significant role in the initial stage of the adsorption process. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process is spontaneous, random, and endothermic. The results suggest that a modification of clinoptilolite effectively reduces the leaching of nitrate in soil.

  • CEDI-BPM(Continuous Electrodeionization-Bipolar Membrane) has advantages due to high ion permselectivity through ion exchange membranes and the production of $H^+$ and $OH^-$ ions on the bipolar membrane surfaces for regeneration of ion exchange resin during electrodeionization operation. In this study, hardness materials were removed by the CEDI-BPM without scale formation and the ion exchange resins were electrically regenerated during the operation. The adsorption characteristic of ion exchange resin surface, the influence of flow rate on the hardness removal and electric regeneration were investigated in the study. The removal efficiency of Ca was higher than that of Mg in the CEDI-BPM, which was related to the high adsorption capacity of Ca on the cation exchange resin. With increasing flow rate, the flux of Ca and Mg was enhanced by the permselectivity of a cation exchange membrane. In the electric regeneration of CEDI-BPM, it was shown that the regeneration efficiency was higher with a lower regeneration potential applied between cathode and anode.

  • In this study, amine derivatives and ion exchange resins were selected to actively control penetration ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$) as the element technology of repair materials for concrete structures in drainage environments. Ions ($SO{_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$) adsorption performance and corrosion resistance of calcium hydroxide solution with amine derivative and ion exchange resin were confirmed by ion chromatography and potentiostat analysis. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the amine derivative is excellent in the adsorption of chlorine ion and the ion exchange resin is excellent in the adsorption of sulfate ion. It has been confirmed that corrosion resistance can be increased by proper combination of two materials in the calcium hydroxide solution containing sulfate ion and chloride ion simulating sewage environment.
