This study was carried out to convert the hydrophobic characteristics of PVDF to hydrophilic. Poly(-vinylidene fluorine) (PVDF) was grafted by electron beam irradiation and sulfonated. The grafting degree of modified PVDF increased with the monomer concentration, but not the conversion degree. From the results of FTIR and XPS, it was shown that the amount of converted sulfur increased with the grafting degree. The radiation-induced graft polymerization led to decrease fluorine from 35.7% to 21.3%. Meanwhile, the oxygen and sulfur content increased up to 8.1% and 3.2%. The pore size of modified membranes was shrunken and the roughness sharply decreased after irradiation. The ion exchange capacity and contact angle were investigated to show the characteristics of PVDF. The enhanced ion exchange capacity and lower contact angle of modified PVDF showed that the hydrophilicity played a role in determining membrane fouling. Electron beam irradiation successfully modified the hydrophobic characteristics of PVDF to hydrophilic.

Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
In microelectronics packaging, the reliability of the metal/polymer interfaces is an important issue because the adhesion strength between dissimilar materials is often inherently poor. The modification of polymer sufaces by ion beam irradiation and rf plasma are commonly used to enhance the adhesion strength of the interface. T-peel strengths were measured using a Cu/polyimide system under varying $Ar^+$ ion beam irradiation pretreatment conditions. The measured T-peel strength showed reversed camel back shape regarding the fixed metal-layer thickness, which was quite different from the results of the $90^{\circ}$ peel test. The elementary analysis suggests that the variation of the T-peel strength is a combined outcome of the plastic bending work of the metal and polymer strips. The results indicate that the peel strength increases with $Ar^+$ ion beam irradiation energy at the fixed metal-layer thickness.
Using the ion-beam irradiated indium zinc oxide (IZO) films which was cured at $100^{\circ}C$, uniform LC and homogeneous alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules was achieved. The IZO film was deposited on the glass substrate at the curing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and irradiated by the ion-beam which is an LC alignment method. To verify the LC alignment characteristics, polarizing optical microscope and the crystal rotation method were used. Additionally, it was confirmed that the LC cell with the IZO films had an enough thermal budget for high-quality LC applications. Field emission scanning electron microscope was conducted as a surface analysis to evaluate the effect of the ion-beam irradiation on the IZO films. Through this, it was revealed that the ion-beam irradiation induced rough surface with anisotropic characteristics. Finally, electro-optical (EO) performances of the twisted-nematic cells with the IZO films were collected and it was confirmed that this cell had better EO performances than the conventional rubbed polyimide. Furthermore, the polar anchoring energy was measured and a suitable value for stable LC device operation was achieved.

LC aligning capabilities and the variation of pretilt angles with ion beam irradiation on the a-C:H thin films, and electro-optical (EO) performances of the ion beam aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film were studied. A high pretilt angle of $3.5{^{\circ}}$ via ion beam irradiation on the a-C:H thin film was measured. Also, the LC pretilt angle decreased due to the increase in surface roughness at over 2 min of IB exposure time. It is considered that this roughness increase due to increasing IB exposure time that generated destroy of oriented rings of atoms related to LC alignment. An excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film for 1 min. Also, a faster response time for the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film for 1 min can be achieved. Finally, the residual DC property of the ion beam aligned TN-LCD with ion beam exposure of 1 min on the a-C:H thin film is almost same as that of the rubbing aligned TN-LCD on a PI surface.
$SrTiO_3$ (STO) single crystal irradiated with a 3-MeV proton beam exhibits blue and green mixed luminescence. However, the same proton beam when used to irradiate STO with a very thin layer of deposited Pt does not show any luminescence. This Pt layer prevents any damage which may otherwise be caused by arcing, which stems from the accumulated surface voltage of tens of kV due to the charge induced by secondary electrons on the surface of the insulator during the ion beam irradiation process. Hence, the luminescence of ion-irradiated STO originates from the modification of the STO surface layer caused by arcing rather than from any direct ion beam irradiation effect. STO treated with atmospheric-pressure plasma, a simple and cost-effective method, also exhibits the same type of blue and green mixed luminescence as STO treated with an ion beam, as the plasma also creates a layer of surface damage due to arcing.

Swift heavy ion (SHI) beam irradiation can generate desirable defects in materials by transferring sufficient energy to the lattice that favours huge possibilities in tailoring of materials. The effect of Ag15+ ion irradiation with energy 200 MeV on spray deposited V2O5 thin films of thickness 253 nm is studied at various ion doses from 5 × 1011 to 1 × 1013 ions/㎠. The XRD results of pristine film confirmed orthorhombic structure of V2O5 and its average crystallite size was found to be 20 nm. The peak at 394 cm-1 in Raman spectra confirmed O-V-O bonding of V2O5, whereas 917 cm-1 arise because of distortion in stoichiometry by a loss of oxygen atoms. Raman peaks vanished completely above the ion fluence of 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. Optical studies by UV-Vis spectroscopy shows decrement in transmittance with an increase in ion fluence up to 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. The red shift is observed both in the direct and indirect band gaps until 5 × 1012 ions/㎠. The surface topography of the pristine film revealed sheath like structure with randomly distributed spherical nano-particles. The roughness of film decreased and the density of spherical nanoparticles increased upon irradiation. Irradiation improved the conductivity significantly for fluence 5 × 1011 ions/㎠ due to band gap reduction and grain growth.

The electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the one-side rubbing twisted nematic (TN) - liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide (PI) surface with one-side ion beam (IB) irradiation were successfully studied. The good LC alignment for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation was observed. The suitable transmittance-voltage curves for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation were measured. Also, the good response time characteristics of the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation were measured. The fast response time can be achieved for the one-side rubbing TN-LCD on the PI surface with one-side IB irradiation.
Ion irradiation is a very promising tool to modify the chemical structure and physical properities of polymers. This study was aimed to evaluate the cellular adhesion to ion beam-irradiated surface of biodegradable poly-l-lactide(PLLA) membrane. The PLLA membrane samples were irradiated by using 35 KeV $Ar^+$ to fluence of $5{\times}10^{13}$, $5{\times}10^{14}$ and $5{\times}10^{15}\;ion/cm^2$. Water contact angles to control and each dose of ion beam-irradiated PLLA membranes were measured. Cultured fetal rat calvarial osteoblasts were seeded onto control and each dose of ion beam-irradiated PLLA membranes and cultured. After 24 hours, each PLLA membranes onto which osteoblasts attached were examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Osteoblasts were removed from each PLLA membrane and then, the vitality and the number of cells were calibrated. Alkaline phosphatase of detached cells from each PLLA membranes were measured. Ion beam-irradiated PLLA membranes showed no significantly morphological change from control PLLA membranes. In the measurement of water contact angle to each membrane, the dose range of ion beam employed in this study reduced significantly contact angles. Among them, $5{\times}10^{14}\;ion/cm^2$ showed the least contact angle. The vitalities of osteoblastes detached from each membranes were confirmed by flow cytometer and well attached cells with their own morphology onto each membranes were observed by SEM. A very strong improvement of the cell adhesion and proliferation was observed for ion beam-irradiated surfaces of PLLA membranes. $5{\times}10^{15}\;ion/cm^2$ exhibited the most strong effect also in cellular adherence. ALPase activities also tended to increase in ion beam-irradiated membranes but statistical differences were not found. These results suggested that ion beam irradiation is an effective tool to improve the adhesion and spreading behaviour of the cells onto the biodegradable PLLA membranes for the promotion of membrane-tissue integration.

We present the alignment characteristics of LC (liquid crystal) molecules on solution-derived HLO (hafnium lanthanum oxide) films fabricated using IB (ion-beam) irradiation. We then demonstrated that LC molecules can be homogeneously and uniformly aligned on the HLO film irradiated at an IB incident energy of 1.2 keV. Physicochemical analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the LC alignment mechanism on the IB-irradiated HLO film. In addition, the electro-optical performance of a TN (twisted-nematic) cell fabricated using the IB-irradiated HLO film exhibited characteristics superior to those of the conventional TN cell fabricated using a rubbed polyimide layer.
