To increase phosphate (P) availability in soils, the efficiency of silicate (Si) in reducing P adsorption was investigated by competitive adsorption tests under changing conditions of pH, ion concentrations, and order of anion addition along with single adsorption properties of each ion at $20^{\circ}C$. In the single ion adsorption study, P and Si ions showed the opposite reaction patterns: phosphate adsorption decreased with increasing pH and attained adsorption maximum however, silicate adsorption increased with increasing pH without attaining adsorption maximum. Phosphorus and Si adsorption were influenced by pH in the range of 5.0 - 9.0 and the type and amount of P and Si concentration. Silicate added to soil before P or in a mixture with P significantly reduced P adsorption above pH 7.0; however, there was no significant Si-induced decreased in P adsorption at pH 5.0 when anions were added as mixture. The efficiency of Si in reducing P adsorption increased with increasing Si concentration and pH. The effect of P on Si adsorption was relatively small at pH 5.0 and no effect of P on silicate adsorption was observed at pH 9.0. The presence of Si strongly depressed P adsorption when Si was added before P compared to P and Si added as a mixture. These results suggest that application of Si may decrease P adsorption and increase the availability of P in soils. Furthermore, a Si source would be better to add before P application to enhance the availability of P in soils.
The effect of anionic and cationic exchange polymer layer on the chronopotentiometry (CP) and current voltage curves (I-V) of charged composite membrane are investigated. Also, the ion transport near the interface between electrolyte and ionic exchange polymer membranes (anionic and cationic ones) and charged mosaic polymer composite membrane is studied. The results show that both anionic and cationic polymer exchange membranes exhibit lower voltage drop over range of applied current density and possess favorable industrial application potentials, especially at low KCl concentration. While the charged mosaic polymer composite membrane didn't show any current-voltage change, irrespective to the type and the concentration of used electrolyte. CP and I-V measurements are effectively used to give some fundamental understanding for ion transport behavior of ion exchange polymer membrane near the interlace.

Perchlorate ($ClO{_4}^-$) is the material that is used as propellants of rockets and material of explosive as a form of ammonium perchlorate salts. Ammonium perchlorate solution of high concentration is recovered from expired rocket through demilitarization process by the water-jet method. If people take perchlorate in food and water, it interferes with adsorption of iodide which is the substance needed to synthesize thyroid hormone in the thyroid gland. It has an bad influence upon disturbing pregnancy and synthesis of growth hormone. So the effective method is necessary to remove perchlorate anion in water. By considering economic aspect, we studied effective desorption (regeneration) of perchlorate anion from adsorbent with studies on removal and adsorption of perchlorate anion. Desorption experiment was conducted as batch type. Depending on various conditions (concentration, pH, cation anion form) elution, we evaluated amount, efficiency of desorption(amount of adsorption/desorption ${\times}$ 100). Also, research confirmed the efficiency of mixed resins between anion exchange resin and activated carbon and expected synergic effect from advantages of both adsorbents.

Retardation effect of heavy metals in soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solids particles is well known phenomena. The adsorption of metal ions has been recognized more strong in clay mineral and organic matter contents rather than sands and gravels. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect in two sandy soils by conducting batch and column tests. The column tests were conducted to obtain the relationship between concentration and time known as breakthrough curve (BTC). We applied pulse type injection of ZnCl$_2$solution on the inlet boundary and monitored the effluent concentration at the exit boundary under steady state condition using EC-meter and ICP-AES. Batch test consisted of an equilibrium procedure for fine fractions collected from two sandy soils for various initial ZnCl$_2$concentrations, and analysis of Zn ions in equilibrated solution using ICP-AES. The results of column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Zn analyzed by ICP was far less than that detected by EC-meter for both soils and ii) travel times for peak concentration were more less identical for two different monitoring techniques. The first result can be explained by ion exchange between Zn and other cations initially present in the soil particles since ICP analysis showed a significant amount of Ca, Mg ions in the effluent. From the second result, we found that retardation effect was not present in these soils due to strong cation exchange capacity of Zn ion over other cations since we did not apply a solution containing more adsorptive cations such as Al. The result of batch test also showed high distribution coefficients (K$_{d}$) for two soils supporting the dominant ion exchange phenomena. Based on the retardation factor obtained from the Kd, we predicted the BTC using CDE model and compared with the BTC of Zn concentration obtained from ICP The predicted BTC, however, disagreed with the monitored in terms of travel time and magnitude of the peak concentrations. The only way to describe the prominent decrease of Zn ion was to introduce decay or sink coefficient in the CDE model to account for irreversible decrease of Zn ions in liquid phase.e.
A characteristic study of chlorine dioxide generation by the electrolysis system was performed after chlorite ($ClO_2^-$) is adsorbed from sodium chlorite by a polymer ion exchange resin. A strongly basic anion exchange resin was used and a Ti plate coated with Ru and Ir was used as an electrode. Various parameters such as reaction stirring velocity, reaction temperature, chlorine dioxide product concentration, ion exchange resin content and product maker type for the adsorption quantity in the chlorite adsorption of ion exchange resin were investigated and found the ion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity. A generation trend of chlorine dioxide was observed by the electrolysis system and optimum conditions on the desired value were found using response surface design of DOE (Design of Experiments). The strongly basic anion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity was SAR-20 (TRILITE Gel type II) and the adsorption quantity was around 110 mg/IER (g). Observed generation optimum conditions of chlorine dioxide were constant-current (electrode area base; $A/dm^2$) and flow rate of $N_2$ gas (4.7 L/min) at the desired value of sterilization (900~1000 ppm, 1 h).
Measurement of concentration and size distribution of TSP, ammonium, nitrate and sulfate were made from Mar., 1991. to June., 1992 in Seoul. The seasonal variation of concentration and size distribution of aerosols has been investiated. Aerosol were collected and size frationated by Andersen air sampler. Size classified samples were extrated with deionized water and analyzed for ammonium, nitrate and sulfate by ion chromatography. As the results of measurement, the average of concentration and MMAD(mass median aerodynamic diameter) were $118.58 \mu g/m^3$, and $2.77 \mu m$ for TSP, $1.92 \mu g/m^3$ and $1.35 \mu m$ for ammonium, $1.34 \mu g/m^3$ and $1.58 \mu m$ for nitrate, $8.52 \mu g/m^3$ and $2.15 \mu m$ for sulfate. The Seasonal variation of concentration and size distribution was observed for ammonium, nitrate and sulfate. The concentration peak of TSP was observed in coarse particles in spring and observed in fine particles in winter. The concentration's distribution of TSP, ammonium, nitrate and sulfate was observed bimodal type during all season.
The chemical characteristics and age dating of the thermal springwater developed recently in Chullabukdo were investigated. The temperature range of the thermal springwater was found 27∼29$^{\circ}C$, indicating a low temperature thermal springwater. The concentration of $F^-$ ion in the springwater was found relatively high in the range of 2∼3 ppm, but $NO_3^-$ ion was nearly not detected. The concentration range of $SO_4^{2-}$ ion was 0.02∼23 ppm, among which $SO_4^{2-}$ content of $Y_3$ was found very high compared to that of other springwater, since this site is known as a sulfur spring. $HCO_3^-$ ion content was found 2∼5 times higher than that of groundwater. $Y_1,\;Y_3,\;Y_5,\;Y_2,\;Y_4,\;and\;Y_8$, were classified as $HCO_3^-$ type, $Y_6$ as $CI^-$type, and $Y_7$, as no domonant type by classification diagram for anion and cation facies. From the results of age dating on the basis of the mean tritium level of precipitation and thermal springs, $Y_1$ was identified as the oldest thermal spring (-89 years) and $Y_7$ was identified as -89 years and $Y_7$ was -1 year using dispersive model. The results calculated by two models agreed well each other.

Polycarboxylate type superplasticizers(PC) have got widely used for making not only high performance concrete but low grade concrete as well. It is known that fluidity of cement with PC is affected by the characteristics of cement especially sulphate ion concentration and hydration activity. But the characteristics of PC also affect the fluidity. The fluidity of cement mortar with various types of PC was measured and critical dosage(CD) and dispersing ability(DA) was calculated. CD and DA is strongly dependent on the type of PC. And the variation of fluidity on time was affected by the type of PC also. So, it is advisable to investigate the property of PC before production of concrete and adjust it to meet the requirements of concrete depending on the materials, the time of transport and so on.
In this paper, the uniaxial, triaxial compression tests and consolidation tests on the clay sample substituted initial pore water for pollutant were performed to evaluate the change in geotechnical properties of the contaminated clay. The contaminant transport analysis on embankment type landfill using the MT3D model was also performed to evaluate the extent of transport and diffusion. There was tendency that strength, compressibility and permeability has increased with the increase in the concentration of NaCl solution. The increase in the strength and compressibility of sample saturated with leachate was higher than samples saturated with NaCl solution, but in the permeability coefficient was lower. As the result of contaminant transport analysis, the predicted concentration was in high with the increase in the initial concentration of $Cl^-$ ion and increased in a non-linear form. The transportation distance calculated with use of regression equation between the distance from contaminant source and the concentration of $Cl^-$ ion was increased with the increase in the initial concentration.

A micro pH-ISFET probe, which can be applied to the in vivo measurements of the hydrogen ion concentration in blood, has been developed, and a measuring system equiped with this probe also developed. The pH-ISFET has been fatricated by employing the techniques of integrated circuit fabrication. Two kinds of micro electrode formed around the sensing gate during the wafer process, and the other is a capillary type of Ag/AfCl/sat. KCI reduced in size. This capillary electrode has shown its good performance characteristics so far in the application with ISFET as well as a commercial one. In order to form a micro pH-ISFET probe, this pH-ISFET and well as a commercial one. In order to form a micro pH-ISFET probe, this pH-ISFET and the capillary electrode were built together into a needle tip having 1 mm inner diameter. The chip size of a twin pH-ISFET is 0.8 mmx1.4 mm, the material of the sensing gate membrane is Si3N4, and the sensitivity of the developed probe is about 52mV/pH.
