  • The reaction conditions optimization, including the temperature of the reaction, amount of catalyst required, and reaction time for the linoleic acids (LAs) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) production by catalytic dehydration of castor oil via saponification was investigated by response surface methodology (RSM). It was confirmed that all three parameters (temperature, time, and amount of catalyst) were influential factors in isolating LAs and CLAs. When the temperature was increased, the iodine value increased, and the reaction time and catalyst amount increased. The optimal reaction conditions were: 240 ℃, 2.2 h reaction time, and 7 wt% catalyst amount. The maximum iodine value reached 156.25 with 91.69% conversion to the essential fatty acids.

  • The mechanism behind super-filling of high-aspect-ratio features with Cu by catalyst-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CECVD) coupled with plasma treatment is described and the metrology required to predict the filling feasibility is identified and quantified. The reaction probability of a Cu precursor was determined as a function of substrate temperature. Iodine adatoms are deactivated by the bombardment of energetic particles and also by the overdeposition of sputtered Cu atoms during the plasma treatment. The degree of deactivation of adsorbed iodine was experimentally quantified. The quantified factors, reaction probability and degree of deactivation of iodine were introduced to the simulation for the prediction of the trench filling aspect by CECVD coupled with plasma treatment. Simulated results show excellent agreement with the experimental filling aspects.

  • The ring opening of epoxides with elemental iodine and bromine in the presence of three diamine podands 7-9 as new catalysts affords vicinal iodo alcohols and bromo alcohols in high yields. This new procedure occurs regioselectively under neutral and mild conditions in various aprotic solvents even when sensitive functional groups are presented.

  • The effects of catalysts and reactive conditions on the synthesis of aluminum alkoxides are investigated. HgCl2 and I2 as catalysts are used in the synthesis reaction for comparing to no addtion. The absorption peak in IR spectra according to Al-O-L bond of aluminum isopropoxide and aluminum sec-butoxide appear at near 1030cm-1 and 1060cm-1 respectively regardless of kinds of catalysts. The synthesis yield of alu-minum-isopropoxide was 90% in case of no catalyst addition and increased to all of 95% by addition of HgCl2 and I2 The synthesis yield of aluminum sec-butoxide is increased to 95% by addition of I2 catalyst com-paring to no addition.

  • This study was performed to develop a low Pt content catalyst as a catalyst for HI decomposition in S-I process. Bimetallic catalysts added various amounts of Pt on a silica supported Ni catalyst were prepared by impregnation method. HI decomposition was carried out using a fixed bed reactor. As a result, Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst showed enhanced catalytic activity compared with each monometallic catalyst. Deactivation of Ni-Pt catalyst was not observed while deactivation of Ni monometallic catalyst was rapidly occurred in HI decomposition. The HI conversion of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst was increased similar to Pt catalyst with increase of the reaction temperature over a temperature range 573K to 773K. From the TG analysis, it was shown that $NiI_2$ remained on the Ni(5.0)-Pt(0.5)/$SiO_2$ catalyst after the HI decomposition reaction was decomposed below 700K. It seems that small amount of Pt in bimetallic catalyst increase the decomposition of $NiI_2$ generated after the decomposition of HI. Consequently, it was considered that the activity of Ni-Pt bimetallic catalyst was kept during the HI decomposition reaction.

  • A small size Fischer-Tropsch Catalyst testing apparatus, designed for an operating pressure of 150 psig, was test fabricated from ordinary schedule 40 iron pipes. The operability of the apparatus was tested by charging the reactor tube with the Lurgi Fischer-Tropsch iron Catalyst and passing through it the water gas obtained by gasifying the Korean anthracite using steam and oxygen. With the kind of catalyst charged, the apparatus was proven to daily produce about 50c.c. of synthetic greasy product, water and water soluble compounds, by running at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and at a space velocity of 180 volume of gas per volume of catalyst/hr. About 20 consecutive days of operation is claimed to be sufficient for gathering an enough amount of synthetic products for such ordinary tests as distillation analysis, density measurement, iodine value determination etc. This trial fabrication of apparatus may be the first case of its kind in Korea in that the work has been conducted out in much a pilot plant scheme rather than a routine laboratory way which depends on small glass ware apparatus.
