  • This paper deals with the design and implementation of an efficient topology for cascaded multilevel inverters with reduced part counts. In the proposed design, a well-established basic unit is first developed. The series extension of this unit results in the formation of the proposed multilevel inverter. The proposed design minimizes the number of power electronic components including insulated-gate bipolar transistors and gate driver circuits, which in turn cuts down the size of the inverter assembly and reduces the operating power losses. An explicit control strategy with enhanced device efficiency is also acquired. Thus, the part count reductions enhance not only the economical merits but also the technical features of the entire system. In order to accomplish the desired operational aspects, three algorithms are considered to determine the magnitudes of the dc voltage sources effectively. The proposed topology is compared with the conventional cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter topology, to reflect the merits of the presented structure. In continue, both the analytical and experimental results of a cascaded 31-level structure are analyzed. The obtained results are discussed in depth, and the exemplary performance of the proposed structure is corroborated.

  • Wireless inductive power transfer (IPT) technology is used in many applications today. A compact and high-frequency primary side inverter is one of the most important parts of a WPT system. In this study, a modified class EF-type voltage-fed multi-resonant inverter has been proposed for WPT application at a frequency range of 85-100 kHz. Instead of an infinite input choke inductor, a resonant inductor is used to reduce loss and power density. The peak voltage stress across the MOSFET has been reduced to almost 60% from a class-E inverter using a passive clamping circuit. A simple yet effective design procedure has been presented to calculate the various component values of the proposed inverter. The overall system is simulated using MATLAB/SimPowerSystem to verify the theoretical concepts. A 500-W prototype was built and tested to validate the simulated results. The inverter exhibited 90% efficiency at nearly perfect alignment condition, and efficiency reduced gradually with the misalignment of WPT coils. The proposed inverter maintains zero-voltage switching (ZVS) during considerable load changes and possesses all the inherent advantages of class E-type inverters.

  • The analysis and design process of the LCL filter with passive damping circuits for three-phase grid-connected inverter are presented based on the generalized model of LCL filter. Several types of the passive damping circuits in previous studies could be compared and analyzed by using the generalized model considering various design criteria of passive damping circuits. According to the analysis in this paper, a reasonable configuration of passive damping circuits for three-phase grid-connected inverters is proposed. The validity of the proposed design process is verified by informative simulation and experimental results.

  • The optimal design of the rotor slot for inverter-fed induction motor was performed. The purpose of the paper is to verify the optimal point by experiment. A sensitivity analysis is performed, and the models near to an optimal point are selected. In the selecting process of models, 2 design variables with high sensitivity are selected out of 5 design variables. On the basis of the selected variables, 2 models near to the optimal point are decided. The tim e-step F.E.A and the experiment are performed. Optimal point and performance improvement of the optimal mode are verified.

  • The LC filter design procedure of the inverter output filter is described. The transfer function of the filter output voltage to the load current is described with the capacitor value and the system time constant considering the system controller. By using the closed form of the relation between the filter capacitor value and the system time constant, the capacitor value can be calculated with the given system time constant and vice versa. It is more practical for the implementation of power and control circuit of inverter. And as the effect of the load current to the voltage distortion can be calculated from the closed form, it is possible to analyze the system how much the voltage waveform is distorted in case of the nonlinear load. All the proposed design procedure is verified with the simulation and experimental results.

  • LSMs are installed under girders along the long track. In order to improve the efficiency of the LSM, long stator LSM should be divided into the specified length and the propulsion inverters should have the system topology to generate high voltage and current for LSMs. This paper presents a system topology with two-step inverter in order to generate high voltage in inverter. A LSM propulsion system is developed and implemented in Maltab/Simulink. A system model of the two-step Inverter is applied to developed model. This paper demonstrates through simulation, advantages of multi-step inverter. The conclusions can serve the design of LSM propulsion system.

  • The performance evaluation of a residential split system inverter air-conditioner has been conducted analytically and experimentally at different system operating conditions. A simulation program for modelling an air-conditioning system which consists of a compressor, a condenser, a capillary tube, an evaporator and related attachments was developed on the basis of the Oak Ridge heat pump design model, MARK III. The accuracy of the simulation results for the compressor frequencies of 32, 68 and 79 Hz for the residential split system inverter air-conditioner has been estimated by comparing calculation results to the experimental data and parametric study has been performed to investigate the effect of design parameters and operation conditions on the system performance.

Each phase leg of inverter circuit consists of an LC resonant tank, two main switches, and one auxiliary switches. This paper presents design consideration via a study example of a three phase prototype inverter for motor drives. A simple device tester with zero current switching capability is proposed to select eligible auxiliary switches. The principle of operation, feature and design considerations are illustrated and verified through the experiment with a 2.2kW 5kHz IGBT based experimental circuit.
