  • Cosmological shock waves result from supersonic flow motions induced by hierarchical clustering during the large-scale structure formation in the Universe. Suprathermal particles are known to be produced via plasma interactions at collisionless shocks in tenuous plasmas and they can be further accelerated to become cosmic rays (CRs) via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). The presence of CR electrons has been inferred from observations of diffuse radio halos and relics in some merging galaxy clusters. We have calculated the emissions from CR electrons accelerated at weak planar shocks, using time-dependent DSA simulations that include energy losses via synchrotron emission and Inverse Compton scattering. The simulated nonthermal emission are used to model the synchrotron emission from several observed radio relics.

  • During the formation of cosmic web, collisionless shock waves are produced around and inside the substructures. In these shock waves electrons and ions are accelerated to such high energies that they can produce gamma rays in several ways. Many authors have studied the contribution of shock-induced radiation to the cosmic gamma-ray background. However not all the important physical processes are included in their calculation. By considering more complete physical process, we re-investigate the problem. In our model, the energy distribution of the cosmic rays (CRs) are calculated by widely accepted diffusive shock acceleration model, both primary and secondary CR electrons are included, both inverse Compton scattering and bremsstrahlung process are considered. The difference of the results are discussed.

  • The method is presented which predicts voltage waveforms at each nodes inter-connected arbitrarily on the coupled transmission lines by extracting the node connection condition to be included in the modal telegrapher's equation, hence analyzing the mechanism of waveform propagation on transmission lines. It is shown that it is also possible to analyze efficiently the coupled nonuniform lines. And then the nonuniformity of coupled lines is demonstrated for suppressing the crosstalk spikes using the one-dimensional inverse-scattering control theory. The predicted waveforms by presented method are analyzed and verified by comparison with those by the generalized S-parameter technique.

  • This paper presents a tumor detection system for breast cancer that utilizes two-dimensional (2D) image reconstruction with microwave tomographic imaging. The breast cancer detection system under development consists of 16 transmit/receive antennas, and the microwave tomography system operates at 900 MHz. To solve a 2D inverse scattering problem, the method of moments (MoM) is employed for forward problem solving, and the simplex method employed as an optimization algorithm. The results of the reconstructed image show that the method accurately shows the position of a breast tumor.

  • Time-dependent neutron transport equation with delayed neutrons is analytic-ally solved in the case of isotropic scattering with constant cross sections. The equations in the two divided time regions are obtained from the original equation by the asymptotic method. It is shown that the approximate solutions in each time region are uniformly valid in time to the order of the inverse magnitude of the velocity.

  • We have studied the micellisation of poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) and poly(n-butyl acrylate)-graft-poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solution. The size and structure of the formed micelles was elucidated by scattering and imaging techniques. The micelle structure depends on pH, composition, and topology: graft copolymers form much smaller micelles that block copolymers of similar composition. We have also synthesized block copolymers of acrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) or N,N-diethylacrylamide (DEAAm). Due to the LCST of polyNIPAAm and polyDEAAm, these block copolymers spontaneously form micelles upon heating and they form inverse micelles upon decreasing pH below 4. If the LCST block is much longer than the PAA one, this presents a very convenient way to prepare crew-cut micelles. The polymers have been successfully used as stabilizers in emulsion polymerization. They also have been conjugated to streptavidin. The conjugates reversibly form mesoscopic particles on heating.

  • Inverse synthetic aperture radar(ISAR) image generated from bistatic radar(Bi-ISAR) represents two-dimensional scattering distribution of a target, and the Bi-ISAR can be used for bistatic target identification. However, Bi-ISAR has large variability in scattering mechanisms depending on bistatic configurations and do not represent exact range-Doppler information of a target due to inherent distortion. Thus, an efficient training DB construction is the most important factor in target identification using Bi-ISARs. Recently, a database construction method based on realistic flight scenarios of a target, which provides a reliable identification performance for the monostatic target identification, was applied to target identification using high resolution range profiles(HRRPs) generated from bistatic radar(Bi-HRRPs), to construct efficient training DB under bistatic configurations. Consequently, high identification performance was achieved using only small amount of training Bi-HRRPs, when the target is a considerable distance away from the bistatic radar. Thus, flight scenarios based training DB construction is applied to target identification using Bi-ISARs. Then, the capability and efficiency of the method is analyzed.
