  • As the Internet use explodes recently, the malicious attacks and hacking for a system connected to network occur frequently. This means the fatal damage can be caused by these intrusions in the government agency, public office, and company operating various systems. For such reasons, there are growing interests and demand about the intrusion detection systems (IDS)-the security systems for detecting, identifying and responding to unauthorized or abnormal activities appropriately. The intrusion detection models that have been applied in conventional IDS are generally designed by modeling the experts' implicit knowledge on the network intrusions or the hackers' abnormal behaviors. These kinds of intrusion detection models perform well under the normal situations. However, they show poor performance when they meet a new or unknown pattern of the network attacks. For this reason, several recent studies try to adopt various artificial intelligence techniques, which can proactively respond to the unknown threats. Especially, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have popularly been applied in the prior studies because of its superior prediction accuracy. However, ANNs have some intrinsic limitations such as the risk of overfitting, the requirement of the large sample size, and the lack of understanding the prediction process (i.e. black box theory). As a result, the most recent studies on IDS have started to adopt support vector machine (SVM), the classification technique that is more stable and powerful compared to ANNs. SVM is known as a relatively high predictive power and generalization capability. Under this background, this study proposes a novel intelligent intrusion detection model that uses SVM as the classification model in order to improve the predictive ability of IDS. Also, our model is designed to consider the asymmetric error cost by optimizing the classification threshold. Generally, there are two common forms of errors in intrusion detection. The first error type is the False-Positive Error (FPE). In the case of FPE, the wrong judgment on it may result in the unnecessary fixation. The second error type is the False-Negative Error (FNE) that mainly misjudges the malware of the program as normal. Compared to FPE, FNE is more fatal. Thus, when considering total cost of misclassification in IDS, it is more reasonable to assign heavier weights on FNE rather than FPE. Therefore, we designed our proposed intrusion detection model to optimize the classification threshold in order to minimize the total misclassification cost. In this case, conventional SVM cannot be applied because it is designed to generate discrete output (i.e. a class). To resolve this problem, we used the revised SVM technique proposed by Platt(2000), which is able to generate the probability estimate. To validate the practical applicability of our model, we applied it to the real-world dataset for network intrusion detection. The experimental dataset was collected from the IDS sensor of an official institution in Korea from January to June 2010. We collected 15,000 log data in total, and selected 1,000 samples from them by using random sampling method. In addition, the SVM model was compared with the logistic regression (LOGIT), decision trees (DT), and ANN to confirm the superiority of the proposed model. LOGIT and DT was experimented using PASW Statistics v18.0, and ANN was experimented using Neuroshell 4.0. For SVM, LIBSVM v2.90-a freeware for training SVM classifier-was used. Empirical results showed that our proposed model based on SVM outperformed all the other comparative models in detecting network intrusions from the accuracy perspective. They also showed that our model reduced the total misclassification cost compared to the ANN-based intrusion detection model. As a result, it is expected that the intrusion detection model proposed in this paper would not only enhance the performance of IDS, but also lead to better management of FNE.

  • For detecting an intrusion based on the anomaly of a user's activities, previous works are concentrated on statistical techniques or frequent episode mining in order to analyze an audit data. But, since they mainly analyze the average behaviour of user's activities, some anomalies can be detected inaccurately. Therefore, we propose an anomaly detection method that utilizes an associative classification for modelling intrusion detection. Finally, we proof that a prediction model built from associative classification method yields better accuracy than a prediction model built from a traditional methods by experimental results.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is the combination of the internet and various sensing devices. IoT security has increasingly attracted extensive attention. However, significant losses appears due to malicious attacks. Therefore, intrusion detection, which detects malicious attacks and their behaviors in IoT devices plays a crucial role in IoT security. The intrusion detection system, namely IDS should be executed efficiently by conducting classification and efficient feature extraction techniques. To effectively perform Intrusion detection in IoT applications, a novel method based on a Conventional Neural Network (CNN) for classification and an improved Genetic Algorithm (GA) for extraction is proposed and implemented. Existing issues like failing to detect the few attacks from smaller samples are focused, and hence the proposed novel CNN is applied to detect almost all attacks from small to large samples. For that purpose, the feature selection is essential. Thus, the genetic algorithm is improved to identify the best fitness values to perform accurate feature selection. To evaluate the performance, the NSL-KDDCUP dataset is used, and two datasets such as KDDTEST21 and KDDTEST+ are chosen. The performance and results are compared and analyzed with other existing models. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has superior intrusion detection rates to existing models, where the accuracy and true positive rate improve and the false positive rate decrease. In addition, the proposed algorithm indicates better performance on KDDTEST+ than KDDTEST21 because there are few attacks from minor samples in KDDTEST+. Therefore, the results demonstrate that the novel proposed CNN with the improved GA can identify almost every intrusion.

  • In general network-based intrusion detection system is designed to detect malicious behavior directed at a network or its resources. The key goal of this paper is to look at network data and identify whether it is normal traffic data or anomaly traffic data specifically for accounting information systems. In today's world, there are a variety of principles for detecting various forms of network-based intrusion. In this paper, we are using supervised machine learning techniques. Classification models are used to train and validate data. Using these algorithms we are training the system using a training dataset then we use this trained system to detect intrusion from the testing dataset. In our proposed method, we will detect whether the network data is normal or an anomaly. Using this method we can avoid unauthorized activity on the network and systems under that network. The Decision Tree and K-Nearest Neighbor are applied to the proposed model to classify abnormal to normal behaviors of network traffic data. In addition to that, Logistic Regression Classifier and Support Vector Classification algorithms are used in our model to support proposed concepts. Furthermore, a feature selection method is used to collect valuable information from the dataset to enhance the efficiency of the proposed approach. Random Forest machine learning algorithm is used, which assists the system to identify crucial aspects and focus on them rather than all the features them. The experimental findings revealed that the suggested method for network intrusion detection has a neglected false alarm rate, with the accuracy of the result expected to be between 95% and 100%. As a result of the high precision rate, this concept can be used to detect network data intrusion and prevent vulnerabilities on the network.

  • Nowadays, research in deep learning leveraged automated computing and networking paradigm evidenced rapid contributions in terms of Software Defined Networking (SDN) and its diverse security applications while handling cybercrimes. SDN plays a vital role in sniffing information related to network usage in large-scale data centers that simultaneously support an improved algorithm design for automated detection of network intrusions. Despite its security protocols, SDN is considered contradictory towards DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service). Several research studies developed machine learning-based network intrusion detection systems addressing detection and mitigation of DDoS attacks in SDN-based networks due to dynamic changes in various features and behavioral patterns. Addressing this problem, this research study focuses on effectively designing a multistage hybrid and intelligent deep learning classifier based on modified deep forest classification to detect DDoS attacks in SDN networks. Experimental results depict that the performance accuracy of the proposed classifier is improved when evaluated with standard parameters.

  • Applying artificial intelligence, machine learning and data mining techniques to intrusion detection system are increasing. But most of researches are focused on improving the performance of classifier. These classifiers are performed by batch way and it is not proper method for realtime intrusion detection system. We propose an incremental feature extraction and classification technique for realtime intrusion detection system. Applying proposed system to KDD CUP 99 data, experimental result shows that it has similar capability compared to batch way intrusion detection system.

  • In this paper, we have applied Genetic Algorithms(GAs) to Intrusion Detection System(TDS), and then proposed and simulated the misuse detection model firstly. We have implemented with the KBD contest data, and tried to simulated in the same environment. In the experiment, the set of record is regarded as a chromosome, and GAs are used to produce the intrusion patterns. That is, the intrusion rules are generated. We have concentrated on the simulation and analysis of classification among the Data Mining techniques and then the intrusion patterns are produced. The generated rules are represented by intrusion data and classified between abnormal and normal users. The different rules are generated separately from three models "Time Based Traffic Model", "Host Based Traffic Model", and "Content Model". The proposed system has generated the update and adaptive rules automatically and continuously on the misuse detection method which is difficult to update the rule generation. The generated rules are experimented on 430M test data and almost 94.3% of detection rate is shown.3% of detection rate is shown.

  • In this paper, in order to identify and recognize attack patterns, we propose a Bayesian classification using frequent patterns. In theory, Bayesian classifiers guarantee the minimum error rate compared to all other classifiers. However, in practice this is not always the case owing to inaccuracies in the unrealistic assumption{ class conditional independence) made for its use. Our method addresses the problem of attribute dependence by discovering frequent patterns. It generates frequent patterns using an efficient FP-growth approach. Since the volume of patterns produced can be large, we propose a pruning technique for selection only interesting patterns. Also, this method estimates the probability of a new case using different product approximations, where each product approximation assumes different independence of the attributes. Our experiments show that the proposed classifier achieves higher accuracy and is more efficient than other classifiers.
