Functional ARCH (fARCH) for high-frequency time series: illustration (고빈도 시계열 분석을 위한 함수 변동성 fARCH(1) 모형 소개와 예시)

  • High frequency time series are now prevalent in financial data. However, models need to be further developed to suit high frequency time series that account for intraday volatilities since traditional volatility models such as ARCH and GARCH are concerned only with daily volatilities. Due to $H{\ddot{o}}rmann$ et al. (2013), functional ARCH abbreviated as fARCH is proposed to analyze intraday volatilities based on high frequency time series. This article introduces fARCH to readers that illustrate intraday volatility configuration on the KOSPI and the Hyundai motor company based on the data with one minute high frequency.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze intraday price momentum. When price trends are formed, price momentum is the phenomenon that future prices tend to follow the trend. When the market opened and closed, a U-shaped trading volume pattern in which the trading volume was concentrated was observed. In this paper, we defined price momentum as the 10 minute trend after market opening is maintained until the end of market. The strategy is to determine buying and selling in accordance with the price change in the initial 10 minutes and liquidating at closing price. In this study, the strategy was empirically analyzed by using minute data, and it showed effectiveness, indicating the presence of an intraday price momentum. A pattern in which returns are increasing at an early stage is called a J-shaped pattern. If the J-shaped pattern occurs, we have found that the price momentum phenomenon tends to be stronger than otherwise. The DTW algorithm, which is well known in the field of pattern recognition, was used for J-shaped pattern recognition and the algorithm was effective in predicting intraday price movements. This study showed that intraday price momentum exists in the KOSPI200 futures market.

A New Measure of Asset Pricing: Friction-Adjusted Three-Factor Model

  • In unfrictionless markets, one measure of asset pricing is its height of friction. This study develops a three-factor model by loosening the assumptions about stocks without friction, without risk, and perfectly liquid. Friction is used as an indicator of transaction costs to be included in the model as a variable that will reduce individual profits. This approach is used to estimate return, beta and other variable for firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX). To test the efficacy of friction-adjusted three-factor model, we use intraday data from July 2016 to October 2018. The sample includes all listed firms; intraday data chosen purposively from regular market are sorted by capitalization, which represents each tick size from the biggest to smallest. We run 3,065,835 intraday data of asking price, bid price, and trading price to get proportional quoted half-spread and proportional effective half-spread. We find evidence of adjusted friction on the three-factor model. High/low trading friction will cause a significant/insignificant return difference before and after adjustment. The difference in average beta that reflects market risk is able to explain the existence of trading friction, while the difference between SMB and HML in all observation periods cannot explain returns and the existence of trading friction.

  • We focus on the functional autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (fARCH) modelling to analyze intraday volatilities based on high frequency financial time series. Multivariate volatility models are investigated to approximate fARCH(1). A formula of multi-step ahead volatilities for fARCH(1) model is derived. As an application, in implementing fARCH(1), a choice of appropriate time interval for the intraday return is discussed. High frequency KOSPI data analysis is conducted to illustrate the main contributions of the article.

The Analysis of the Herding Behavior of Korean Institutional Investors: Evidence from the Intraday (일중거래자료를 사용한 기관투자자 군집거래의 분석)

  • There are many literatures about the herding behavior of institutional investors but there is lack of literatures about the relation among several investor groups consisting of institutional investors. So we investigate the relation among sub-institutional investor groups like bank, insurance companies, pension funds using KRX intraday trading data of 2009. As the result, we find that foreign, individual, and securities firm investors trade in the opposite direction of other investor groups including pension funds. And pension, insurance, asset management, private equity funds, other companies, government, and banks are cross-mimicking each other, so we conclude that these investors make herding behavior. In 2009 institutional investors except securities firms make herding in a short period, and insurance, asset management, pension funds and other companies make herding and self-mimicking in all period, but there is no herding and mimicking after foreign investors.

A Study of Predictability of VKOSPI on the KOSPI200 Intraday Jumps using different Jump Size and Trading Time (점프발생 강도 및 거래시간에 따른 변동성지수의 KOSPI200 일중 점프 예측력에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the information contents of KOSPI200 Options for intraday big market movement by using minute by minute data. The major findings are summarized as follows; First, big market movement occurred more frequently during 9:00~10:00 and 14:00~14:50. These phenomena reflect market unstability just after opening and near closing. Second, VKSOPI is most closely associated with extreme changes such as KOSPI200 jumps. Third, VKOSPI is showed more predictive power with negative KOSPI200 jumps than KOSPI200 jumps. Fourth, VKOSPI showed predictive power for the positive and negative jumps up to 30 minutes before the jumps occurs. The purpose of this study is to explore the most recent topics in the field of finance, research on market microstructure. This study is an important contribution to investigate intraday information comprehensively in terms of market microstructure effects using the 15-year long-term and the high-frequency data(minute by minute). The results of this study are expected to contribute to detect intraday true jumps, proactive development of market risk indicators, risk management, derivatives investment strategy.

FINANCIAL MODELS INDUCED FROM AUXILIARY INDICES AND TWITTER DATA

  • As we know, some indices and data are strong influence to the price movement of some assets now, but not to another assets and in future. Thus we define some asset models for several time intervals; intraday, weekly, monthly, and yearly asset models. We define these asset models by using Brownian motion with volatility and Poisson process, and several deterministic functions(index function, twitter data function and big-jump simple function etc). In our asset models, these deterministic functions are the positive or negative levels of auxiliary indices, of analyzed data, and for imminent and extreme state(for example, financial shock or the highest popularity in the market). These functions determined by indices, twitter data and shocking news are a kind of one of speciality of our asset models. For reasonableness of our asset models, we introduce several real data, figurers and tables, and simulations. Perhaps from our asset models, for short-term or long-term investment, we can classify and reference many kinds of usual auxiliary indices, information and data.

  • When a financial time series consists of daily (closing) returns, traditional volatility models such as autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) and generalized ARCH (GARCH) are useful to figure out daily volatilities. With high frequency returns in a day, one may adopt various multivariate GARCH techniques (MGARCH) (Tsay, Multivariate Time Series Analysis With R and Financial Application, John Wiley, 2014) to obtain intraday volatilities as long as the high frequency is moderate. When it comes to the ultra high frequency (UHF) case (e.g., one minute prices are available everyday), a new model needs to be developed to suit UHF time series in order to figure out continuous time intraday-volatilities. Aue et al. (Journal of Time Series Analysis, 38, 3-21; 2017) proposed functional GARCH (fGARCH) to analyze functional volatilities based on UHF data. This article introduces fGARCH to the readers and illustrates how to estimate fGARCH equations using UHF data of KOSPI and Hyundai motor company.

The Intraday Lead-Lag Relationships between the Stock Index and the Stock Index Futures Market in Korea and China (한국과 중국의 현물시장과 주가지수선물시장간의 선-후행관계에 관한 연구)

  • Using high-frequency data for 2 years, this study investigates intraday lead-lag relationship between stock index and stock index futures markets in Korea and China. We found that there are some differences in price discovery and volatility transmission between Korea and China after the stock index futures markets was introduced. Following Stoll-Whaley(1990) and Chan(1992), the multiple regression is estimated to examine the lead-lag patterns between the two markets by Newey-West's(1987) heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent covariance matrix(HAC matrix). Empirical results of KOSPI 200 shows that the futures market leads the cash market and weak evidence that the cash market leads the futures market. New market information disseminates in the futures market before the stock market with index arbitrageurs then stepping in quickly to bring the cost-of-carry relation back into alignment. The regression tests for the conditional volatility which is estimated using EGARCH model do not show that there is a clear pattern of the futures market leading the stock market in terms of the volatility even though controlling nonsynchronous trading effects. This implies that information in price innovations that originate in the futures market is transmitted to the volatility of the cash market. Empirical results of CSI 300 shows that the cash market is found to play a more dominant role in the price discovery process after the Chinese index started a sharp decline immediately after the stock index futures were introduced. The new stock index futures markets does not function well in its price discovery performance at its infancy stage, apparently due to high barriers to entry into this emerging futures markets. Based on EGAECH model, the results uncover strong bi-directional dependence in the intraday volatility of both markets.

  • High-frequency data are now prevalent in financial time series. As a functional data arising from high-frequency financial time series, we are concerned with the intraday volatility to which functional principal component analysis (FPCA) is applied in order to achieve a dimension reduction. A review on FPCA and R function is made and high-frequency KOSPI volatility is analysed as an application.
