In this paper, we propose a novel hardware architecture for an intra-prediction, integer transform, quantization, inverse integer transform, inverse quantization, and mode decision module for the macroblock engine of a new video coding standard, H.264. To reduce the cycle of intra prediction, transform/quantization, and inverse quantization/inverse transform of H.264, a reduction method for cycle overhead in the case of I16MB mode is proposed. This method can process one macroblock for 927 cycles for all cases of macroblock type by processing $4{\times}4$ Hadamard transform and quantization during $16{\times}16$ prediction. This module was designed using Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) and operates with a 54 MHz clock using the Hynix $0.35 {\mu}m$ TLM (triple layer metal) library.
In this letter, an adaptive scanning that improves intra coding efficiency in the H.264/AVC standard is proposed. The proposed adaptive scanning utilizes the prediction directions (modes) that include the horizontal and vertical edge information in a block. Depending on the prediction directions, the proposed method uses three scanning methods: zigzag scanning, horizontal scanning, and vertical scanning. In the proposed method, horizontal and vertical scanning are used in vertical and horizontal prediction modes, respectively, and the normal zigzag scanning in the H.264 standard is used in all other intra prediction modes. The proposed method reduces the bit rate by approximately 2.5% compared with H.264/AVC, without the degradation of video quality.

Intra prediction coding is one of the many coding-efficiency oriented tools of H.264/AVC, but it requires high computational complexity. Many fast intra coding algorithms have been proposed to reduce the computational complexity of intra prediction. While most of them have been focused on the mode decision methods themselves, we propose a fast algorithm in which new intra modes are substituted for the conventional intra modes so that the number of intra modes can be reduced. The simulation results show that the proposed method could reduce the encoding time of the overall sequence by $49\%$ without any noticeable degradation of the coding efficiency.
VVC (Versatile Video Coding) is a new video compression technique that is being standardized, and it supports HD / UHD / 8K video, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video with a goal of approximately 2 times higher coding efficiency than the conventional HEVC. It also aims to support a variety of functionalities such as screen content coding, adaptive resolution changes, and independent sub-pictures. In this paper, we investigate the signaling process of intra prediction mode first, and develop an effective coding method of the chroma intra prediction mode. In case of the DM mode, the proposed method simplifies the prediction mode of the chorma intra prediction mode when referring to the angular mode of the luminance block. It can improve coding efficiency of the chroma intra prediction mode, and the proposed process can also consider the size of the block in order to further improve its coding efficiency.

HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) is a recently proposed video compression standard that has a two times greater coding efficiency than previous video compression standards. The key factors of high compression performance and increasement of computational complexity are the various types of block partitions and modes of intra prediction in HEVC. This paper presents an intra prediction hardware architecture for HEVC utilizing pipelining and interleaving techniques to increase the efficiency and performance while reducing the requirement for hardware resources.

Intra-frame video compression, which cannot make use of temporal predictions, requires much higher bit rates compared with inter-frame schemes. In order to reduce bit rates, intra-frame predictive coding methods in DCT domain have been studied especially within the framework of the MPEG-4 video coding standard currently being developed. In this paper, we propose novel intra-frame predictive coding methods in DCT domain with the marginal complexity increase over the conventional methods . The proposed methods consist of a DC coefficient prediction method and two AC coefficient prediction methods. The proposed methods consist of a DC coefficient prediction method and two AC coefficient prediction methods. The proposed DC coefficient prediction method makes it possible to adaptively select the prediction directions without overhead bits, by comparing gradients of DC coefficients from neighboring blocks. As the AC coefficient prediction methods, first, we present an effective method which can improve the prediction directions of the MPEG-4 scheme by considering the DC coefficient of the current block to be coded. And, we present another effective method that decision on the prediction is carried out for each AC coefficient. Simulation results show that substantial bit savings can be achieved by the proposed methods.
H.264| MPEG-4 AVC is a new video codingstandard defined by JVT (Joint Video Team) which consists of ITU-T and ISO/IEC. Many techniques are adopted fur the compression efficiency: Especially, an intra prediction in an inter frame is one example but it leads to excessive amount of encoding time due to the decision of a candidate mode and a RDcost calculation. For this reason, a fast determination of the best intra prediction mode is the main issue for saving the encoding time. In this paper, by using the result of statistical relation between intra $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ intra predictions, the number of candidate modes for $4{\times}4$ intra prediction is reduced. Firstly, utilizing motion vector obtained after inter prediction, prediction of a block mode for each macroblock is made. If an intra prediction is needed, the correlation table between $16{\times}16$ and $4{\times}4$ intra predicted modes is created using the probability during each I frame-coding process. Secondly, using this result, the candidate modes for a $4{\times}4$ intra prediction that reaches a predefined specific probability value are only considered in the same GOP For the experiments, JM11.0, the reference software of H.264|MPEG-4 AVC is used and the experimental results show that the encoding time could be reduced by 51.24% in maximum with negligible amounts of PSNR drop and bitrate increase.

JVET (Joint Video Exploration Team) which explored evolving technologies of video coding with capabilities beyond HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), released a references software codec named the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) for performance verification of coding technologies. JEM has 67 intra prediction modes that extend the 35 modes of HEVC for intra prediction. Therefore, the enhancement of the coding performance is limited due to the overhead of prediction mode coding. In this paper, we analyze the probabilities of prediction modes selections, and then we propose a more efficient intra prediction mode coding based on the results of analyzed mode occurrence. In addition, we propose a context modeling for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) of the proposed mode coding. Experimental results show that the BD-rate gain is 0.02% on the AI (All Intra) coding structure compared to JEM 7.0. We need to optimize context modeling for additional coding performance enhancement.
Intra prediction in HEVC is also significantly improved from H.264/AVC with the increased prediction modes up to 35 that results in increase of the complexity cost. Hence, a fast intra mode decision algorithm is required for real-time applications. A fast intra mode decision is proposed in this paper for further complexity reduction in addition to the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) that has been adopted into the HEVC reference software, referred to as HM, for fast intra prediction. The proposed method reduces the complexity of intra mode decision by limiting the number of search modes in both steps of RMD and the final mode decision. Experimental results show that the proposed method provide about 13.2% encoding time reduction with 1.0% BD-rate increase on average over test sequences in HM 12.0.
VVC uses 67 modes in intra prediction. Most probable mode (MPM) is used to reduce data for the representation of intra prediction mode. If the mode to send exists in the MPM candidate, the index of the MPM list is transmitted. If it does not exist in the MPM candidate, TBC encoding is applied. When TBC is applied in intra prediction, three are selected in order of low number mode and coded into 5 bits. The remaining modes except the mode encoded by 5 bits are encoded by 6 bits. In this paper, we examine the limitations of the TBC used in VVC intra prediction and propose an adaptive method that can encode more efficiently than conventional methods when using TBC in intra prediction. As a result, the coding efficiency of the overall coding performance is 0.01% and 0.04% in AI and RA, respectively, compared with the conventional coding method.
