  • An important goal of computational wind engineering is to impact the design process with simulations of flow around buildings and bridges. One challenging aspect of this goal is to solve the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations accurately. For the unsteady computations, an adaptive finite element technique may reduce the computer time and storage. The preliminary application of a p-version as well as an h-version adaptive technique to computational wind engineering has been reported in previous paper. The details on the implementation of p-adaptive technique will be discussed in this paper. In this technique, two posteriori error estimations, which are based on the velocity and vorticity, are first presented. Then, the polynomial order of the interpolation function is increased continuously element by element until the estimated error is less than the accepted. The second through sixth orders of hierarchical functions are used as the interpolation polynomials. Unequal order interpolations are used for velocity and pressure. Using the flow around a circular cylinder with Reynolds number of 1000 the two error estimators are compared. The result show that the estimated error based on the velocity is lower than that based on the vorticity.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified cubic convolution scaler for the enlargement or reduction of digital images. The proposed method has less computational complexity than the cubic convolution method. In order to reduce the computational complexity, we use the linear function of the cubic convolution and the difference value of adjacent pixels for selecting interpolation methods. We employ adders and barrel shifts to calculate weights of the proposed method. The proposed method is compared with the conventional one for the computational complexity and the image quality. It has been designed and verified by HDL(Hardware Description Language), and synthesized using Xilinx Virtex FPGA.

  • In a multi-resolution image encoding system, the image is encoded into a single file as a layer of bit streams, and then it is transmitted layer by layer progressively to reduce the transmission time across a low bandwidth connection. This encoding scheme is also suitable for multiple decoders, each with different capabilities ranging from a handheld device to a PC. In our previous work, we proposed an edge adaptive hierarchical interpolation algorithm for multi-resolution image coding system. In this paper, we enhanced its compression efficiency by adding three major components. First, its prediction accuracy is improved using context adaptive error modeling as a feedback. Second, the conditional probability of prediction errors is sharpened by removing the sign redundancy among local prediction errors by applying sign flipping. Third, the conditional probability is sharpened further by reducing the number of distinct error symbols using error remapping function. Experimental results on benchmark data sets reveal that the enhanced algorithm achieves a better compression bit rate than our previous algorithm and other algorithms. It is shown that compression bit rate is much better for images that are rich in directional edges and textures. The enhanced algorithm also shows better rate-distortion performance and visual quality at the intermediate stages of progressive image transmission.

  • In this paper, high speed IC package-to-package interconnections are modeled as lossless multiconductor transmission lines operating in the TEM mode. And, three mathematical algorithms for computing electrical parameters of the lossless multiconductor transmission lines are described. A semi-analytic Green's function method is used in computing per unit length capacitance and inductance matrices, a matrix square root algorithm based on the QR algorithm is used in computing a characteristic impedance matrix, and a matrix algorithm based on the theory of M-matrix is used in computing a diagonally matched load impedance matrix. These algorithms are implemented in a computer program DIME (DIagonally Matched Load Impedance Extractor) which computes electrical parameters of the lossless multiconductor transmission lines. Also, to illustrate the concept of design database for high speed IC package-to-package interconnection, a database for the multi conductor strip transmission lines system is constructed. This database is constructed with a sufficiently small number of nodes using the multi-dimensional cubic spline interpolation algorithm. The maximum interpolation error for diagonally matched load impedance matrix extraction from the database is 1.3 %.

  • This paper compares numerical quadrature techniques for computing an inverse Fourier transform integral in two-dimensional resistivity modeling. The quadrature techniques using exponential and cubic spline interpolations are examined for the case of a homogeneous earth model. In both methods the integral over the interval from 0 to ${\lambda}_{min}$, where ${\lambda}_{min}$, is the minimum sampling spatial wavenumber, is calculated by approximating Fourier transformed potentials to a logarithmic function. This scheme greatly reduces the inverse Fourier transform error associated with the logarithmic discontinuity at ${\lambda}=0$. Numrical results show that, if the sampling intervals are adequate, the cubic spline interpolation method is more accurate than the exponential interpolation method.

  • This paper introduces the development of temperature mapping code between thermal mesh and structural mesh in KARI Satellite Design Software. Generally, temperature distribution of a satellite varies with the time by the space environment of the orbit, so thermal expansion of the structure should be analysed in design of the satellite. For the sake of the coupled thermal structural analysis, an interpolation algorithm between two finite element heterogeneous grids has been proposed by which temperature transfer is successively conducted.

  • In this paper, a topology optimization method based on the element independent nodal density (EIND) is developed for continuum solids with multiple load cases and multiple constraints. The optimization problem is formulated ad minimizing the volume subject to displacement constraints. Nodal densities of the finite element mesh are used a the design variable. The nodal densities are interpolated into any point in the design domain by the Shepard interpolation scheme and the Heaviside function. Without using additional constraints (such ad the filtering technique), mesh-independent, checkerboard-free, distinct optimal topology can be obtained. Adopting the rational approximation for material properties (RAMP), the topology optimization procedure is implemented using a solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) method and a dual programming optimization algorithm. The computational efficiency is greatly improved by multithread parallel computing with OpenMP to run parallel programs for the shared-memory model of parallel computation. Finally, several examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed techniques.

  • Among many algorithms for the integration problems in which one wants to compute the approximation to the definite integral in the average case setting, we study the average case errors of numerical integration rules using interpolation. In particular, we choose the composite Newton-Cotes quadratures and the function values at equally spaced sample points on the given interval as information. We compute the average case error of composite Newton-Cotes quadratures and show that it is minimal(modulo a multiplicative constant).

  • In this paper, we compared various shear deformation functions for modelling anti-symmetric composite sandwich plates discretized by a mixed finite element method based on the Lagrangian/Hermite interpolation functions. These shear deformation theories uses polynomial, trigonometric, hyperbolic and exponential functions through the thickness direction, allowing for zero transverse shear stresses at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. All shear deformation functions are compared with other available analytical/3D elasticity solutions, As a result, reasonable accuracy for investigated problems are predicted. Particularly, The present results show that the use of exponential shear deformation theory provides very good solutions for composite sandwich plates.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method to improve the visual quality of reconstructed images for 3D pattern recognition based on the computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR). The proposed CIIR method provides improved 3D reconstructed images by superimposing magnified elemental images by a combination of a round mapping model and image interpolation algorithms. To objectively evaluate the proposed method, we introduce an experimental framework for a computational pickup process and a CIIR process using a Gaussian function and evaluate the proposed method. We also carry out experiments on 3D objects and present their results.
