  • The 96 elementary school teachers' the degrees of understandings about the characteristics of the currents according to the connection methods of batteries in simple electric circuits were investigated. In this study, the concepts on the characteristics of currents according to the connection methods of batteries were divided 'the learned concepts' and 'the differentiated concepts'. The characteristics of the currents in the region of the larger resistance of load than the internal resistance of a battery were called the learned concepts, they are taught in the science curriculum. While the characteristics of the currents in the region of the smaller resistance of load than the internal resistance of a battery were called the differentiated concepts, they are not exposed clearly in the science curriculum. The results obtained in this study are as follows: The average score related to the learned concepts was relatively high, while the degree of the teachers' cognitions of the internal resistance of a battery and the resistance of wires were low. Also the average score related to the differentiated concepts was very low because it seems so new to the elementary school teachers. It strongly suggests that the elementary school teachers did not understand meaningfully the characteristics of the currents related to the connections of batteries on the ground of the cognitions of the internal resistances of batteries and the resistances of loads in simple electric circuits. Hence, they might experience difficulties due to the problems occurred in relation to the connections of batteries in the elementary school science lessons.

  • The internal flows of moonpool usually causes huge added resistance on drillships, and those are very complex to analyze. Therefore, not only experimental approaches but also numerical simulations are required for better investigations when dealing with the hydrodynamic problems of moonpool. In the present research, numerical simulations are used to find out why the resistance increases by moonpool on a running drillship. That is, the three-dimensional numerical simulations and model tests are carried out to examine the characteristics of internal flow and added resistance by changing the section of the moonpool in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Finally, based on the present studies, an optimized shape of the moonpool is suggested, which effectively reduces added resistance, and that is confirmed with three-dimensional numerical simulations and model tests.

  • Background: Panting method for airway resistance measurement has the disadvantages of departing from the normal breathing pattern and of difficult for some patients to perform. We can measure airway resistance during quiet breathing under more physiologic conditions. Airway resistance is often measured during panting but attempts have been made to facilitate resistance measurements during quiet breathing. This study was designed to compare airway resistance measurements during panting with those during quiet breathing. Method: The 24 normal persons and 29 pulmonary disease patients were included in this study. Spirometry was performed and airway resistance measurement was also done during panting and quiet breathing concomittently. Results: The results were as follows; 1) High correlations were found between airway resistance measurements during panting and quiet breathing. 2) Resistance fell during panting, 21.2% in Raw tot, and 22.1% in Raw 0.5. 3) In normal persons, airway resistance fell more during panting when comparing to those in pulmonary disease patients. 4) This was largely independent of thoracic gas volume differences, because the specific airway conductance rose significantly during panting 5) The patients in whom resistance didn't fell during panting was supposed to the patients who couldn't perform panting successively because of high resistance. Conclusions: Although airway resistance can be measured during panting or quiet breathing according to the patient's performance, we must consider resistance fell during panting, by a mean 20%. It may be concluded that quiet breathing is more likely than panting to provide a relevant measurement of airway resistance.

  • In this study, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance was examined among 74 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius strains recently isolated from clinical cases of canine pyoderma and otitis externa at the veterinary teaching hospital at Konkuk University, Korea. Bacterial resistance to the nine commonly used antibiotics was evaluated by a standard disk diffusion technique based on the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The results demonstrated that most S. pseudintermedius isolates were resistant to penicillin (95.9%) or tetracycline (91.9%), but highly susceptible to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (90.5%). Among the 74 isolates, 13 mecA-positive and methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) strains were identified, displaying a high level of resistance (84.6-100%) to each of the individual antibiotics evaluated, with the exception of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (46.2% resistance). Notably, all of the MRSP isolates exhibited simultaneous resistance to four or more different antibiotics, indicating that they are multiple drug resistant (MDR) strains. Taken together, these results imply that more careful selection or prescription of antibiotics for canine pyoderma and otitis externa should be required for reducing the emergence and/or spread of MDR strains, especially MDR-MRSP isolates, in veterinary pet clinics in Korea.

  • Background/Aims: Helicobacter pylori eradication rates are decreasing because of increases in clarithromycin resistance. Thus, finding an easy and accurate method of detecting clarithromycin resistance is important. Methods: We evaluated 70 H. pylori isolates from Korean patients. Dual-labeled peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probes were designed to detect resistance associated with point mutations in 23S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene domain V (A2142G, A2143G, and T2182C). Data were analyzed by probe-based fluorescence melting curve analysis based on probe-target dissociation temperatures and compared with Sanger sequencing. Results: Among 70 H. pylori isolates, 0, 16, and 58 isolates contained A2142G, A2143G, and T2182C mutations, respectively. PNA probe-based analysis exhibited 100.0% positive predictive values for A2142G and A2143G and a 98.3% positive predictive value for T2182C. PNA probe-based analysis results correlated with 98.6% of Sanger sequencing results (${\kappa}$-value=0.990; standard error, 0.010). Conclusions: H. pylori clarithromycin resistance can be easily and accurately assessed by dual-labeled PNA probe-based melting curve analysis if probes are used based on the appropriate resistance-related mutations. This method is fast, simple, accurate, and adaptable for clinical samples. It may help clinicians choose a precise eradication regimen.

  • Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREFM) is becoming a threatening pathogen. We identified a gene called DD1.5K by differential display-PCR, which was preferentially expressed in the bloodstream isolates of VREFM. Due to its amino acid similarity to transfer complex protein, trsE, and tissue-specific expression, this gene may be involved in virulence of VREFM.

  • Background : The prevalence of tuberculosis is slowly decreasing in Korea. However, the drug-resistance of pulmonary tuberculosis is a major risk factor of treatment failure. Moreover, the National Surveillance System has recently been discontinued. Therefore, a continuous survey is necessary for the exact detection of the rate of drug resistance. We studied the recent 4-year drug resistance rate of tuberculosis at a single University hospital in Seoul. Materials and Methods : The study included 239 pulmonary tuberculosis patients performed with a tuberculosis culture and a drug-sensitivity test at Hanyang University Medical Center from March 1999 to March 2003. Results : Of the 239 patients included in the study during the 4-year period, 52 patients showed resistance to one or more anti-tuberculosis drug (21.8%). The rate of multi-drug resistance was 12.6%. The resistance rates to isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, streptomycin and pyrazinamide were 18.4%, 13.8%, 11.7%, 6.7% and 8.4%, respectively. Ninety patients had a history of previous anti-tuberculosis treatment, and the rates of the overall drug resistance and multi-drug resistance of these patients were 36.7% and 25.6%, respectively. The patients with drug-resistance showed a higher rate of a previous tuberculosis treatment history (63.5%) than the drug-sensitive group patients (30.5%). Conclusion : The rate of drug resistant tuberculosis is 21.8%, and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis is 12.6%. The rate of drug resistance is higher in those previously treated for tuberculosis.

  • Vitamin D levels have been reported to be associated with diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome. There have been studies on the nutritional status of vitamin D in postmenopausal women at Seoul and premenopausal women at Busan, and these studies showed that nearly no relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the obesity index existed. However, there have been no studies that examined about the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and insulin resistance in Korea. In this study, we investigated serum vitamin D levels and the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance), obesity index (body mass index, percentage of body fat and waist circumference) in 180 premenopausal women (non-obese women 87.8%, obese women 12.2%) in spring (March~April), fall (September~October) and winter (January~February) at Daejeon. Serum vitamin D levels were lower in winter than in spring-fall, after adjusting for age and the obesity index. The frequency of vitamin D inadequacy (serum vitamin D levels were $\leq$ 20 ng/mL) was 45.5% in winter and, 23.5% in spring-fall, and which showed that vitamin D inadequacy was higher in winter than in spring-fall. Multiple regression analysis showed that serum vitamin D levels had no relationship with the obesity index or insulin resistance. There was no difference in the obesity index or insulin resistance between the vitamin D inadequacy and normal group, and there was no relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the obesity index or insulin resistance in non-obese and obese premenopausal women, respectively. In conclusion, serum vitamin D levels in premenopausal women at Daejeon were lower in winter than in spring-fall, and the frequency of vitamin D inadequacy was higher in winter than in spring-fall. Serum vitamin D levels had no relationship with the obesity index or insulin resistance in premenopausal women, most of whom were not obese.

  • Currently, the rapid growth of electric vehicles and the collection and disposal of waste batteries are becoming a social problem. The purpose of this paper is to propose a fast and efficient battery screening method through a safe inspection and storage method according to the collection and storage of waste batteries of electric vehicles. In addition, as the resistance inside the waste battery increases, an instantaneous voltage drop occurs, and there is a risk of overcharging and overdischarging compared to the initial state of the battery. Accordingly, there are great difficulties in operation, so the final goal of this study is to develop a device for diagnosing aging through real-time battery internal resistance measurement. Final result As a result of simulation of the internal resistance measurement test circuit through external impedance (AC), the actual simulation value was 0.05Ω, RS = Vrms / Irms => Vrms = 8.0036mV, Irms = 162.83Ma. Substitute the suggested method. The result was calculated as Rs = 0.0495Ω. It is possible to measure up to 64 impedances inside the aging diagnostic equipment that enables real-time monitoring of the developed battery cells, and the range can be changed according to the application method.

  • Objectives : When sweating factor is excluded, to know the influence of acupuncture stimulation on electrical resistance. Methods : Regional anaesthesia(Lidocane 2%, 1ml, Subcutaneous injection) is applied to measured regions, 4cm round area including left Neiguan P6. So we can make adiaphoresis. Before and after acupucnture stimulation to Laogong P8, we measured the electrical resistance of anesthetized left Neiguan P6, anesthetized non-acupoint, normal left Ximen P4, and normal right Neiguan P6. For measurment, we use the 1.2V, DC system that has 100$k{\Omega}$ internal resistance Results : Under the adiaphoresis, Acupuncture stimulation makes the significant decrease of electrical resistance. In normal regions, so does it. Conclusions : When the acupuncture stimulation is applied to human boby, the decrease of electrical resistance is due not only to sweat secretion but also to other internal resistance.
