  • Solid-state extrusion technique was employed for the improvement of mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLLA) widely used as biodegradable internal fixation devices currently. Cylindrical billets were machined out from the vacuum compression-molded PLLA to have various diameters, and solid-state extrusion of the billets was performed at various drawing rates and at the extrusion temperature of $130^{\circ}C$. Throughout the whole processes the decrease in molecular weight was significantly suppressed to be about $10\%$. Flexural modulus and strength of PLLA increased up to 8.3 GPa and 221 MPa, respectively. Studies on the orientation and crystallinity of extruded PLLA could reveal the effects of billet morphology, draw ratio, and drawing rate on the flexural strengths of PLLA.

  • A study on the method that can measure the internal strain of composite materials is performed to monitor the health status of composite structures. A fiber optic sensor was constructed using the total reflected extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(TR-EFPI) probe with a broadband light source. Result obtained from electrical strain gage adhered on the aluminum beam specimen was compared with that from the fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor and showed a good agreement. It was found that fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor system was adequate for monitoring the strain and thus failure processes in the interior of composite materials.

  • A simulation on the performance of a transcritical $CO_2$ heat pump system is carried out to investigate its characteristics for various operating conditions. Cycle simulation models are established for a steady-state simulation and are verified by comparing experimental data. Based on correlations and methods available in the literature, the processes in individual components of the transcritical cycle are simulated to analyze the performance of $CO_2$ transcritical heat pump system. The simulation models are good enough to predict the performance of a $CO_2$ transcritical cycle. Simulation results are provided to show the relative effects when varying the size of internal heat exchanger and the discharge pressure of a compressor.

  • Six nutrient cycles involving terrestrial plants are identified and characterized. Plants affect biotic and abiotic cycles through their effects on soil properties. They determine their internal nutritional status and nutrient concentrations in their environment via internal and external cycles. Contributions of organic matter to mycorrhizal, trophic, and detrital mediated external cycles and alterations of nutrient concentrations by plants can promote positive feedbacks leading to increased availability and retention of soil nutrients in open systems. Recognizing alternative cycles through plants leads to a definition of nutrient use efficiency for ecosystems: the ratio of system production to nutrient content of organic matter. A simple graph model to predict changes of nutrient use efficiency during primary succession is then presented.

  • Control of Industrial processes is very difficult due to nonlinear dynamics, effect of disturbances and modeling errors. M.Morari proposed Internal Model Control(IMC) system that can be effectively applied to the systems with model uncertainties and time delays. The advantage of IMC is their robustness with respect to a model mismatch and disturbances. But it is difficult to apply for nonlinear systems. ANFIS(Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) which contains multiple linear models as consequent part is used to model nonlinear systems. Generally, the linear parameters in ANFIS can be effectively utilized to control a nonlinear systems. In this paper, we propose new ANFIS-based IMC controller for nonlinear systems. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed control scheme has good performances.

  • Test vector reordering is a very effective way to reduce power consumption during test application. But, it is time-consuming and complicated processes, and it does not consider internal circuit structure, which may limit the effectiveness. In this paper, we order test vectors using fanout count of primary inputs that consider the internal circuit structure, which may reduce the switching activity. Then, we reorder test test vectors again by using Hamming distance between test vectors. We proposed FOVO algorithm to perform these two ideas. FOVO is an effective way to reduce power consumption during test application. The algorithm is applied to benchmark circuits and we get an average of 3.5% or more reduction of the power consumption.

  • Internal heat generation is one of the insidious conditions affecting the quality of an industrial product after it is cast, coated, molded, forged or laminated. Frequently, the product is pressed into service before the exothermic chemical reactions in the generic material has been completed. The heat liberated from this continuing chemical reaction or the residual deformation from the rheological activities in the materials must be adequately removed or prevented, or the product may be discolored, warped, weakened or even "ignited" spontaneously. Numerous instances of premature structural failures, product-recalls, and/or system-malfunctions have been recorded in recent history. The Coulee Dam was poured with pre-chilled concrete just to negate this freakish encore. It is well-known that concrete (a non-isotropic conducting medium), for instance, takes 28 days to develop its full strength. During this period of curing it is conceivable that the processes of internal heat generation, heat conduction and heat dissipation take place simultaneously inside the medium.he medium.

  • The intensive care unit (ICU) is the most common place to die. Also, ethical conflicts among stakeholders occur frequently in the ICU. Thus, ICU clinicians should be competent in all aspects for ethical decision-making. Major sources of conflicts are behavioral issues, such as verbal abuse or poor communication between physicians and nurses, and end-of-life care issues including a lack of respect for the patient's autonomy. The ethical conflicts are significantly associated with the job strain and burn-out syndrome of healthcare workers, and consequently, may threaten the quality of care. To improve the quality of care, handling ethical conflicts properly is emerging as a vital and more comprehensive area. The ICU physicians themselves need to be more sensitive to behavioral conflicts and enable shared decision making in end-of-life care. At the same time, the institutions and administrators should develop their processes to find and resolve common ethical problems in their ICUs.

  • This paper proposes a systematic design methodology for high-speed/high-precision servomechanisms by using a disturbance observer. A multiplicative uncertainty model and a two degree-of-freedom controller composed of a disturbance observer (DOB) and a PD controller are considered as subsystems. Analysis of the system performance, such as internal stability and bandwidth of a servomechanism according to subsystem parameters is conducted for better understanding of the dynamic behavior and interactions among the subsystem parameters. Then, an integrated design methodology, where the interactions are considered simultaneously, is applied to design processes of the servomechanism. The tradeoff relationship between disturbance suppression and measurement noise rejection of the DOB is considered through the design process. Numerical case studies show the improved possibility to evaluate and optimize the dynamic motion performance of the servomechanism. Moreover, the disturbance observer designed based on the proposed design methodology yields excellent disturbance suppression performance.

  • The acoustic properties of anti-inflammatory egonol were investigated by using micro-Brillouin scattering spectroscopy, by use of a 6-pass tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer and an optical microscope specially modified for spectroscopic purposes. The measured Brillouin spectrum was composed of a central peak centered at zero and a Brillouin doublet arising from the longitudinal acoustic waves, i.e. propagating density fluctuations. For the first time, the glass transition of egonol was identified to be about $5^{\circ}C$ at which the Brillouin peak position and the half width showed abrupt changes. The substantial damping of acoustic phonons of egonol near the glass transition temperature indicated that the contribution of internal relaxation processes such as small-amplitude librations of side chains to the damping of acoustic phonons may be substantial depending on the internal structure of molecules.
