  • Pump sump system or pumping stations are built to draw water from a source such as river and used for irrigation, thermal power plants etc. If pump sump is improperly shaped or sized, air entraining vortices or submerged vortices may develop. This may greatly affect pump operation if vortices grow to an appreciable extent. Moreover, the noise and vibration of the pump can be increased by the remaining of vortices in the pump flow passage. Therefore, the vortices in the pump flow passage have to be reduced for a good performance of pump sump station. In this study, the effect of pump intake leaning angle and flow rate on the pump sump internal flow has been investigated. There are three cases with different leaning angle. Moreover, a pipe type with elbow also has been studied. The flow rate with three classes of air entraining vortices has been examined and investigated by decreasing the water level. The result shows that the air entraining vortices easily occurs at the pump intake with large leaning angle. Moreover, the elbow type of the pump intake easily occurs air entraining vortices at the high flow rate (or velocity) in comparison to other pump intake type.

  • The effect of inlet and outlet blade angles on a micro regenerative pump head was examined in experiments. The pump head was little increased by changing the blade angles compared with the original pump with the inlet and outlet blade angles of 0 degree. The effect of the axial clearance between the impeller and the casing on the pump head was also examined. The head was increased largely by decreasing the axial clearance. The computation of the internal flow was performed to clarify the cause of the increase of the pump head due to the decrease of the clearance. The local flow rate in the casing decreased as the leakage flow rate through the axial clearance decreased due to the decrease of the clearance. It was found that the larger head in the smaller clearance was just caused by the smaller local flow rate in the casing. In the case of the smaller clearance, the smaller local flow rate caused the smaller circumferential velocity near the front and rear sides of the impeller. This caused the increase of the angular momentum in the casing and the head.

  • Butterfly valves are widely used as control valves for industrial process. For the definition of optimum configuration of the valve, wide range of related studies has been actively conducted in the case of working fluids of water or air under the normal temperature. Recently, internal flow and performance characteristics of cryogenic butterfly valve for LNG carrier take a growing interest in the field of research and development. Therefore, present study is aimed to investigate the internal flow and performance characteristics of the cryogenic butterfly valve because the study result for the valve can be hardly found at present. Part 1 of this paper describes the study result of a butterfly valve model under the condition of the normal temperature. Succeeding Part 2 of this paper will describe the internal flow characteristics of a cryogenic butterfly valve for LNG carrier. The results of Part 1 show that pressure loss coefficients and flow rate coefficients obtained by the present experiment and CFD analysis agree well each other. Moreover, internal flow visualization for the valve by CFD analysis and PIV measurement have revealed complicated flow patterns of the internal flow field in detail.

  • Hysteresis is an effect by which the order of previous events influences the order of subsequent events. Hysteresis phenomenon of supersonic internal flows with shock waves has not yet been clarified satisfactorily. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. Results obtained were compared with numerically simulated data. The results confirmed hysteresis phenomenon for shock wave in the Laval nozzle at a certain specific condition. The relationship between hysteresis phenomenon and the range of the rate of change of pressure ratio with time was shown experimentally. The existence of hysteretic behavior in the formation, both the location and strength, of shock wave in the straight part of the supersonic nozzle with a range of pressure ratio has also been confirmed numerically.

  • The internal reflux effect on dialysis through the retentate phase of a countercurrently cross-flow rectangular module is investigated. Theoretical analysis of mass transfer in cross-flow devices with or without recycling is analogous to heat transfer in cross-flow heat exchangers. In contrast to a device without reflux, considerable mass transfer is achievable if cross-flow dialyzers are operated with reflux, which provides an increase in fluid velocity, resulting in a reduction in mass-transfer resistance. It is concluded that reflux can enhance mass transfer, especially for large flow rate and feed-concentration operated under high reflux ratio.

  • Effervescent atomizer in which the liquid is ejected from nozzle with bubble caused by gas injection into the liquid is one of twin-fluid atomizers. Effervescent atomizer is operated with the lower injection pressure and the smaller air flow rate when compared with those of other twin-fluid atomizers. In this study, we attempted experiment study to investigate the atomization characteristics of effervescent atomizer related with the internal flow condition. The nozzle was made with acrylic material to investigate the nozzle internal flow. The macroscopic spray analysis was conducted with internal flow images and spray images. Furthermore, SMD was measured by using the laser diffraction method. According to this study, the internal flow condition changed from bubbly flow to annular flow as the air-liquid mass ratio(ALR) increases. At that time, the atomization characteristics were improved.

  • When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.

  • In this paper, the aerodynamic shape of air intake was investigated for the efficient cooling of electronic equipments in aircraft pod. As a first step, ESDU method was applied for the basic shape design of air intake considering the operational environments. The second step was to confirm the performance on design point, so the internal flow field of air intake was analyzed using a commercial Navier-Stokes code(FLUENT). And also the aerodynamic characteristics of internal flow at off-design condition was investigated with the variations of airflow rate. The results show that the air intake meets the requirement of target performance under the mission environments.

  • In this paper, a superposed discharge type ozonizer with an internal dielectric that can be made into a vacuum tube has been designed and fabricated. Ozone generation and discharge characteristics have been investigated in accordance with output voltage of power supply, flow-rate, discharge power and vacuum of inside internal dielectric. Pure oxygen was used as the supply gas of the ozonizer. Ozone concentration and ozone generation are gradually increased when discharge power is increased at the same flow-rate and they are both proportional to the vacuum level. As such, the maximum ozone concentration of 8840 ppm was obtained at vacuum 0.1 Torr and flow-rate 0.5 $\ell$/min.

  • In this study, to present the data in the internal thermal condition of Double skin facade were measured internal temperature and inlet and outlet openings wind speed of double skin facade. Measurements were similar to temperatures in the upper double skin facade. Especially in summer, temperature stratification is through to be unfulfilled seamlessly despite inlet and outlet openings open. Double skin facade inlet and outlet openings of the air flow rate was slower outlet openings of the air flow rate than inlet openings of the air flow rate.
